    Working out and calories in/out

Also, your body might be holding on. If you don't have carb creep, you may not be eating enough with the amount of exercise. Sometimes to break that, eat *bad* for a day or two, then it tricks your body into thinking the famine is over and you might start losing weight again. Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App

Watch for sneaky carbs. A bite here, a larger portion there, juice, etc can get ya. Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App
  3. Even though he is tired from a hard job, a short 20 minute walk after dinner will help his digestion and get you both off of the sofa. Just a short walk. Other things to do than TV? At least on the weekends, like plays, museums, anything..basically, everything everyone has said.

    Low carb

The only diet that has ever worked for me is a lower carb diet. Lots of Protein low carbs. For lunch I have been known to eat ground beef maybe green Beans on the side. meat, zucchini green beans bell peppers red bell peppers dipped in blue cheese. If you go to a fast food place go through the drive-thru and you can order a hamburger without a bun. They call it a lettuce wrap or whatever. I've even been known to eat eggs with like fried eggs with a salad for lunch. chicken sliced up lots of cheese. Fish. Coleslaw. remember a low carbohydrate diet can have a higher level of fat. By the way I've not had my surgery yet, I'm just I'm in the middle of the process. And I'm going to have to low carb it myself to get my weight down. But honestly the only thing that ever ever worked with low carb for me it's staying on the wagon that is hard. I boil a hard-boiled eggs and putting mustard on them. Tuna fish salad with celery eggs mayonnaise and tuna on cucumber slices is a great lunch to. Make sure you drink a lot of Water so your body doesn't get confused. And think you're hungry when your really thirsty. It's never ever worked for me to count calories counting calories only makes me starving and overweight! 5. Read, Read, Read. Go to a Baratric Doctor. Talk to your insurance to see. Usually is it BMI over 40, or less if you have TWO co-morbilites. I know that I unintentionally bumped my BMI over the range (the first time I considered the surgery), because my knee is shot, so I was slumping and measured tall-which helped the math. (Don't do that!) Now, from postponing, I am bigger, so..qualifying was *easier*, yeah me.

    Waking up after surgery

Waking up from any surgery is wacky, as the last thing you remember is starting to breathe thru the mask with ZERO memory of falling asleep, then suddenly you are somewhere else and tired, hurting and people keep talking to you! I just had ACL knee surgery a month ago, and I face palmed the male nurse who was walking around the bed, as he wasn't there "5 minutes ago" & I couldn't open my eyes enough to see him, so I reached out when he walked by and got him square in the face! My son had surgery in October and was trying to pull out the IV when he woke up. The doctor (!!!) had to lay on him and hold him down while they put him back under...twice!! They **finally** brought him back to me with his whole arm wrapped with a very nervous nurse. LOL I hope to avoid a flipping catheter, those things are awful!
  8. Aw Damn Me. Getting started too late on diet program is likely going to knock me out of my preferred/planned date. My fault too. Will likely have to jack up Christmas break. I am a teacher & get off a week for Thanksgiving and two for Christmas and neglected this one thing. Mom will flip if I am not there for what may be her or her husbands last on earth..

  9. Had my first visit today. Nice doctor. Cute too (can we just kiss, kiss and then talk shop). LOL!! He wants an endoscopy and can't get me in until I am back at school. Ugh. I am going to try to go thru insurance, but if not I will be self pay. The appointments begin!!

  10. Trying to get a 'family loan' for WLS as my insurance is as bad as my credit. As a result, my dad is reading reading about the Sleeve. He has noticed that many people only lose about 60-75% of their excess weight, and later gain even some of that back, still battle food, supplements and exercise-but add on GERD & other lifetime issues. It appears that the weight loss the first year is from the shock of the surgery and when your body bounces back, so do all the old issues-so why have surgery? The usual question of, "If you have to do all that, then why have the surgery and the "All you have to do is..." followed by, since you can't do xyz now, what makes you think you can later." I have of course gained and lost forever. Carbs are the death of me. Old Timer thoughts? Thoughts in general?
  11. Went to store, used a mortozied cart (because of my ACL knee surgery TWO weeks ago). My teenager was Mortified. Saying that this was like my "600 lb life) and that I needed to lose weight (duh, WLS planned for Nov). I laughed it off, but also realized that if I don't have surgery/lose weight, I am headed for motorized cart & how hard it would be. :(

@WLSResources/ClothingExch LOL! You made me laugh out loud here in my quiet apartment. Thanks for that!

@Anna Nim I had the same surgery 2 months ago! Well that, plus a meniscus repair and a meniscus trim. But a few months ago in San Diego, we went to the zoo, and my knee was so messed up that my boyfriend and aunt convinced me to get a scooter so I could see the whole zoo. I was pretty mortified too, especially when strangers stopped in their tracks to stare/glare at me or even confront me and tell me "I should be walking!" I weighed about 250 at the time, so I was definitely overweight but in no way "600 pound life" large. People are going to be ridiculous/ignorant/judgmental no matter what, so do what you need to so you can recover and ignore the a-holes! Teenagers are, as a whole, incapable of ignoring them, hence the mortification. :P Hope your knee heals well and quickly!

This was one of the reasons I decided to have surgery - I pictured myself having to ride around in a hoveround by age 50! :-(

You guys are cracking me up! Mow The Kid down indeed!!

I would SO smack a person who actually SAID I should be walking! Those are the same fools that tell women to breastfeed in the restroom. Luckily, at 5 10 and resting bitch face, I never had to do that :)

I just need to do PT..like right now! I need the strength to stop wearing the brace, but since it is hard to move around, it is a pain.

@Cervidae I also had mensicus repair and trim. They shaved all the fuzzy off my bones. Ick City!

      Thanks ya'll!

    In a bad depression slump...

One easy book to look at after you have had blood work (although, of note, magnesium isn't usually tested nor shows as deficient until VERY low) is The Magnesium Miracle (I got my coy off of Amazon for like $10.). I was already taking it cause my Dad is a body worker and healthy as a horse at 72, and takes it. Good luck.

    My work here is done

I wish that there was more categories of useful information and tips for newbies without having to ask and ask or go back and search and search. Like expanded FAQ section. The doctors tell so little and the questions get repeated over and over here-leading to frustration that I hear in your post. Maybe just ignore the newbies and hang with the older peeps?

    Who to tell

You are going to lose weight, people will ask. If you tell them the truth, you will get more questions and possibly some judgy comments. Be prepared with your responses. To me, it doesn't matter what anyone says, it is your body and life is too short to worry about other's thoughts..unless they are paying a bill If you are close to your siblings, your birth mom; then tell them if you want. A person does not have to be supportive to know what is going on with you-but it helps. The rest tell em you are eating 6 small meals, low carb, high Protein and you had hernia surgery-or not. I am being cheeky

    In a bad depression slump...

I NEVER suggested Vitamins at the expense of considering medication-that has already been suggested here by many others. Depression is serious. I hear so much of myself in her. I have my own recent experiences with suicides in my circle, and my own lifelong struggles with depression (FYI, the meds & counseling did not help me One Iota..). Medication even if started *today* won't start to really work for weeks. Hence why I see no reason not to take it now. Magnesium can be bought today and may help in the next few days. I personally, suggest *everyone* take it, not just Venomousflowers. There is a great book called the Magnesium Miracle that convinced me that it is the key to many of our well being. (Note: Low magnesium often does not show in blood work, when/if you get too much in your system by taking it, your gonna poop it out.). Magnesium Orate or Magnesium Glutamate 200% of daily value. This is still my personal recommendation to add to the rest.

    In a bad depression slump...

Go to a Vitamin store. TODAY. Get Magnesium Oratate or Magnesium Glutamate. Magnesium is burned up during stress and we ALL are very, very low in it-our diets suck. Magnesium helps with depression, anxiety, energy levels!!! It is cheap to buy. Do not buy Mag Oxide (does not absorb) or Mag Citrate (poop city). I myself take 200% of daily value-more if I am extra low. It can take a few days/weeks to fill up your bucket..but you will feel better soon. I had let mine slack and was in a sneaky hate spiral of tears and three days of hitting it hard and I feel better (not perfect, but better). It can upset your tummy a bit while your body gets used to it, no worries, it is slow and work up over the course of a few days. Also good to pair it with TMG, Vitiman B, B12 and Folate-these are all cheap and good friends with each other. I DO hear you on what is going on, I am not discounting and everyone has given advice, this is the best way I know to fix it from the inside.

    Chronic Constipation Woes

Magnesium Citrate has a laxative effect (There is a brand called: Calm that you stir into water).
  18. RIGHT!!!!! Of Course I Have Tried Dieting! Think surgery would be my First Choice? (Here I am similar to you, age 46 and 286)
  19. I have NOT had surgery yet. I cancelled a few years ago and am now planning on a Nov date (I would do it today if I could) BUT, I can tell you I can sick of the "All you need to's" and the "Have you tried's"... The worst is from my Dad! "My Doctor suggested to eat coconut for something sweet but low in fat/sugar"...blah. blah. I am not and never have been requesting diet advice!!! I am 46 years old. I am now 286. I know what I am "supposed to" do, yet here I am.
  20. 5 years ago I cancelled my Sleeve surgery two weeks ahead of time. I had lost weight and such, but then, of course, gained it all back plus more and arthritis too boot-and my insurance covered most of it. I am now planning on surgery in November ($$). Yes, the RYN may be the 'gold standard', but I personally prefer the sleeve and it seems you *could* convert if you needed to. Regardless, it is the change the surgery that is the scary part, not they type of surgery... (it does concern me a bit that your Doctor is so pro RYN, you need him to be an expert in YOUR surgery..) I can only speak so much, as I have not had surgery yet, but to me keeping carbs down and Protein up will help you be successful and this surgery will help as a major, major tool, not a magic bullet, but a tool. To help with pre-surgery jitters get everything ready. food you may need to buy, bills paid in advance, house de-cluttered for the post-surgery exhaustion, post surgery comfy clothes ready, etc. I just had ACL knee surgery a week ago and doing all those little things made this past week a million times better. Also, go lift some weights or yoga. There isn't much time for worry inside of those activities. I think it will all go well and I wish you the best!
  21. Have you considered Mexico? A lot of people here have gone that route and are thrilled. Yeah, I hear you. I have gotten medical treatments in Mexico before and was very happy with them, but in this case, after care will keep me in the United States.
  22. My ACL revision surgery went great! Surgical center was on point. I did a million things ahead of time (groceries, medication, etc) This time is less painful, better meds and best of all, I have a Cryo Cube. An ice box thing that circulates cold water around my knee to cool it, for pain and swelling. It is the bomb.com! I am not looking forward to PT & it stinks that I am going to lose so much of my summer. Hopefully I can do more stuff, like Tango when this is done. I wish it was WLS surgery, I have to wait until November for that. ($$).

  23. ACL revision surgery went good! Meds good too :)

    URGENT--advice needed

Regardless if you go to this surgeon or not, he needs to know how his practice is being ran. It will cost him patients at least, and at worst, complications in a patient or a lawsuit. Preferably in writing, so he can get all the details together later. Consider to at least consult with another surgeon, you may find someone you like as much, but whom is more organized.
