Major depression and getting approved
UCLA man replied to Frenchie1977's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Bad advice...They are experienced in detecting deception. I was open and honest about being treated, with success, for years. I let him know I have a very regular and close relationship with my providers and follow their treatment plan. He said he was comfortable because I was being treated and knew to seek help if the depression worsened. The psych forms I was asked to complete asked for history of medications. Since the psychiatrist will be in contact with the weight loss team, I wouldn't take that risk. So many of use that struggle with weight also have depression so it isn't anything new to the psychiatrist. I told him that I believe weight loss might help and he agreed. I asked him when & why he has denied someone. He told me only once has he denied someone and it was because they admitted to him suicidal thoughts, seeing bugs on the wall and not getting treated. I hope this helps! -
That is smart your PCP anticipated the need for a liquid version. I thought my surgical team dropped the ball by not preparing me. They knew what meds I take. My meds were extended release so when crushed the release is immediate which defeats the purpose of extended release. So 2 weeks post op when I reported worsening depression the solution was to crush smaller doses throughout the day. My experience was the depression went away after I was no longer in pain and able to return to my normal daily activities. I hope your experience is a good one.

I pray for you Gina. I can't imagine going through what you have.

I remember telling my WLS team at the 2 week follow up that I am always hungry and didn't think this was supposed to be the case. In hindsight it was due to being on liquids and puree. My hunger dissipated after progressing to solid food. Now 2 months post op I rarely feel hunger. It's like they said I have to remind myself to eat. It has also become clearer to me when I want to eat for emotional reasons....pleasure, boredom, stress, etc. I'm glad the new size of my stomach will no longer allow me to binge in an attempt to satisfy an emotional reason.

I do not regret no longer suffering from sleep apnea. I do not regret no longer having high blood pressure. I do not regret no longer being pre-diabetic.

A guy in my support group said he still drinks Diet Coke. He opens the can or bottle in advance to let all the carbonation escape. Then he drinks it after it has gone flat. I don't know what to think of this?

Asking Dr for more pain meds?
UCLA man replied to Wendydarling19's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I've had chronic back pain that lasted for weeks without improvement. Pain that doesn't improve is terrible. Is your pain at least getting a little better? My turning point was really after 3 days. -
How long if diagnosed with sleep apnea will I have to wait for surgery? Or do I not have to wait?
UCLA man replied to Aaaaaa1234's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My sleep apnea went away very fast. Approx 1 month post op and 30 lb (10%) weight loss. -

Asking Dr for more pain meds?
UCLA man replied to Wendydarling19's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess everyone is different because I only needed pain meds for 3 days after surgery. But if you need them, you need them. -
I have known someone that developed an alcohol addiction after weight loss surgery. He spoke about no longer being able use food to numb his pain and turned to alcohol to numb his pain. Since he was familiar with how Overeaters Anonymous works he quickly got into Alcoholics Anonymous and was successful. I would seek experienced help if I couldn't change myself. This is serious. Best wishes!

My thinking would be to eat those calories back only if your goal is to maintain your current weight or trying to gain more weight. When I'm in the weight loss stage, I do not eat to replace the calories burned by exercise. But check with your team of experts since everyone is unique.

Waking up after surgery
UCLA man replied to Sherbear2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I woke up very relaxed and no pain. No breathing tube. Of course there was an IV with saline drip. Took me a few hours to realize I had a drain tube and catheter. Hated the catheter, it was removed after approx 24 hours. Drain tube removed just before I was discharged after approx 36 hours. -
LOL I've never heard of this discount card. I could never use one though. Children's menu is crap....mini corndogs, chicken nuggets.

Care after leaving the hospital
UCLA man replied to keto_jo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I live alone and didn't need any help. My greatest concern was if something happened to my 15 lb dog I wouldn't be able to pick him up. I wouldn't recommend driving until pain meds have been stopped. It was only 2 days for me. I also used a 'grabber' at home to pick up anything that fell to the floor -
Being concerned about getting your money's worth at a restaurant isn't a smart priority. I am more concerned about the damage that kind of thinking will do to my weight. It makes me feel proud when I leave food on my plate now. The restaurant doesn't determine what the appropriate portion is for me anymore. I do.

Need help about what's some good ideas of food to eat on a 1200 calories diet
UCLA man replied to D'Sleeved's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Premier protein shakes are only 160 calories and because they are packed with so much protein they filled me up enough to replace a meal. -
What kind of person would question your honesty about having surgery? Then state you haven't met their expectations for weight loss...... Stay away from the idiots and jerks.

Cheated on pre op diet :(

You've made amazing progress! Perfection is rare. Once I stopped expecting perfection from myself, progress came a lot easier. "Progress, not Perfection" -
Water. I found it entirely possible not to need to snack during a movie.

I believe it's common. It happened to me too. Because I needed to rest while healing, my outside activities and social interactions were significantly minimized. Feeling pain also negatively affected my mood. I was also processing the loss of the pleasure food gave me. For me it passed in a few weeks when I was able to have more outside activities and social interactions. I hope this helps.

I like Strawberries and Cream. Vanilla is my favorite. Chocolate is my least favorite. Everyone is different. -
