3 months post-op and having trouble with meat :(

@@OutsideMatchInside I can't find any logic to it...they've been grilled, baked and cooked in a tomato sauce. I always weigh my portions, and it's happening within the first bite or so. No pain, just horrific nausea and I have vomited once. @@Babbs I thought it was size at first, so I've been cutting my meat until it looks like ground meat and still no bueno. @@higher Jesus, I hope not! I'm 52 and have had an endometrial ablation and my husband has had a vasectomy. It does feel just like morning sickness, though! I guess I'll take a week off from meats and go slowly back to them. I used Stumptown this morning! Have you ever tried Poverty Bay? So good.... -
The Protein requirement is to promote weight loss and to support your body as it heals and functions in a severe calorie deficit. You're going to HAVE to figure something out and at less than a month post-op, it will be some kind of supplementation. If the RTD shakes like Premier Protein are too thick/rich, try blending them with ice. They end up being more like a shaved ice than a Protein shake, which made them easier to get down. I tried virtually every unflavored protein out there and by far, GENEPRO had the least smell/taste/texture. You probably need to try adding it to something very savory and flavorful, to mask whatever taste you're detecting. I personally like it in my morning coffee, and I like it mixed with refried Beans. There are some good Protein Bars out there: Atkins and Quest are my favorites, and there's a Caramel Nut bar sold on this site under the Bariatric Pal brand that are reallyreallyreally good...almost too good! Bottom line: you HAVE to get protein in, period. Figure out something, even ONE thing, that works and do it every day. As time passes, I've gotten less sensitive to things that made me sick to my stomach early on, so it does get easier
-
@ I still use a scoop in my coffee every morning...it really helps me to get that hit of Protein early in the day. Glad it worked for you

My NUT is a nut
ShelterDog64 replied to futurefeatherweight's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I see almost everyone here saying 'nut'...do you all really see nutritionists vs dietitians? There's a HUGE difference between the two; my program only employs dietitians because of their education and expertise. "Nutritionist" is an unregulated, non-accredited title that can be self-given vs the 4 year bachelor degree or 3/2 advanced degree plus accreditation that the title "dietitian" brings to the table. There are good and bad in both areas, but I'm always going to go with the one who has a degree and whose title requires continuing education for accreditation. -

ShelterDog64 replied to blu2020's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Jadane_dm You need to be measuring portions if you're already on pureed Soups and meats. 'That stuffed feeling' is your body telling you to stop, even if you don't throw up. Learning to read your body's signals and not eating past that 'stop' sign is a huge part of being successful at this. I'm almost 3 months out and from about 1 month, it's been very clear when I need to be finished eating. Different foods of different densities trigger my 'stop' feeling differently. Measure and portion your food, drink liquids as often as you can, make sure you're meeting your Protein and Water goals and get out and walk... -
I have almost no hunger, but sometimes I get an 'empty-stomach' feeling. I've found that I can drink Water and quell that feeling. It's a kind of grumbly, weird feeling but my brain isn't identifying it as hunger.

Sandwich Wraps
ShelterDog64 replied to Stephanie M.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If your plan allows, I like La Tortilla Factory whole wheat fajita size tortillas (I make a quesadilla with one of them folded over). 45cal/4g net carb/6g fiber/4g Protein. They're not bread-y at all like regular white flour tortillas, they get very crisp when I heat them in a pan. I'm not much of a sandwich fan but I've had a few bites of one wrapped around ham and pickled asparagus and the texture was nice! -
Are you on any hypertension meds? Or did you just discontinue your PPI?

I'm almost 3 months post-op and I take a small bite, chew well, swallow, wait a bit...repeat. It's how I'm planning to eat in the future. I never expected to just throw down food again

I have GOT to get back on track

@@LipstickLady **Have healthy FILLING foods in the house that are already prepared for the times when you are hangry. Shrimp salad, cheese cubes, rotisserie chicken, imitation crab legs, hard boiledeggs... Sometimes when my sugar drops, I make bad decisions. I take that ability down a few notches by not having an excuse but to have something healthy available.** This is so true and such great advice! I make sure I have foods available that can save me from myself when my sugar bottoms out. I still have no hunger but I do have those times when my body is screaming for something to get my blood sugar out of the basement. Before my sleeve, I would have gone for something high in simple carbs, just for the immediate relief from hypoglycemia. Now, since I'm not hungry too, I'm more able to make the good choice and have a cheese stick or some hummus. I'm hoping that I'm setting my habits now, because my hunger feelings WILL return and I've got to be ready for it. -

Is a protein bar safe 2.5 months out?
ShelterDog64 replied to fsulady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with Suzzzzzz, the Atkins bars (I like the salted caramel) are soft and the macros are good. I also like Quest bars, but I think they're a little heavier. I've been able to have Protein bars since 4 weeks out and haven't had issues with them or anything other than eggs. -
I have GOT to get back on track
ShelterDog64 replied to madisunshine1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You've got to give yourself a good, swift kick in the ass and get back at it! You've lost THIRTY THREE pounds in less than 8 weeks...when have you EVER done that before?? I've lost 48 in TEN WEEKS...why would either of us sabotage ourselves at this point? We've had this huge, life-changing surgery and to not change our lives would be such a colossal lost opportunity. Stop eating bread and crap that's not helping you right now. Jump back into Protein shakes if you need, to reset your head and your stomach. I've watched you since you got here (your photo grabbed my attention, I'm an OR nurse!) and you've been so upbeat and ON PLAN. Stop yourself from slipping into bad habits RIGHT NOW and get back on track! I'll message with you every day, I'll come back to this thread every day, we can share what we've eaten, I'll cry with you and yell at you and you can yell at me...but don't let this momentary bump in the road turn into anything bigger. You can do this. WE can do this, all of us.
