    Flu Season is Coming

I grew up thinking every bad cold/sinus/stomach thing was 'the flu'. Never got my flu shot, because I'd had 'the flu' and it wasn't all that bad! Then, I actually got THE FLU. I was IN BED for a week, unable to do more than go to the toilet, and then walking around the house sick for 14+ days. I've never missed a flu shot since, and have never been sick with it again. I think way too many people think they've had flu when they haven't. After actually having it, I understand how kids and elderly people die from it. Get your shot...herd immunity is marvelous

    8 days Post OP meal

There's a very good reason you're on Protein shakes at 8 days post-op...you have an enormous staple line down the length of your stomach, and it's not healed yet. If you put even well-chewed tuna into that stomach, it will have to contract and push that food...NOT what you want on an 8 day old staple line. Liquids don't need those contractions to move through your stomach. If you're tired of Protein Shakes, talk to your surgical team and see if you can move to purees...then you can have yogurt, Soup and many other lovely things that aren't protein shakes.

    What's the skinny on coffee?

I deliberately didn't wean so that the PCA pump and it's lovely morphine would help me through the caffeine withdrawal headache

    What's the skinny on coffee?

@@The New Kel No, I was allowed coffee until surgery...in fact, I drank it the day before, then had surgery first case the next morning, so I had the narcotics post-op to help with that awful caffeine withdrawal headache

    Drinking

Once you have the surgery, the pain when you gulp Water will force you to slow down. It was a huge adjustment for me, I've always slammed a 16 oz glass of water with no trouble. I was probably in my 2nd or 3rd week post-op and was taking my allergy meds before bed one night. I totally forgot what I was doing and filled my large bathroom glass with water and gulped it all down. The PAIN...omg. And it came right back up, too. Now, 3 months out, I can take a couple of large swallows at a time and am consistently getting my 64 oz in daily. I keep water with whenever possible and I take a drink as often as I can. I NEVER walk by a fountain without taking a drink, and I never pour water from my glass into the dog bowl or a plant anymore. I stand there and bit by bit, drink it all. You feel better AND look better when you get all your water in daily.

    What's the skinny on coffee?

In my program, they wanted me off coffee for the immediate post-op period because of it's acidity. Once I was off clear liquids, I was able to try it again. I waited until I was about 4 weeks out just because of my previous experiences with my stomach...it can be a little sensitive. I've had 1-2 cups daily since then, with no issues. Caveat: I took my last Protonix last night (PPI), so we'll see how I do without the acid inhibitor.

To eat or not to eat....

I'm 3 months post-op and I still have virtually no hunger. Sometimes I feel kind of 'empty', but its not the same feeling. I'm struggling to get enough food in each day, too.
  9. ShelterDog64

    Is tis true...

I had the sleeve AND a hernia repair and didn't have a drain. It's really individual to the surgeon.

    Avoid ALL sodium.
  11. The pre-op diet and the NPO (nothing by mouth) the night before surgery are two completely different issues. Pre-op diet is sometimes to see if you can stick to a diet and often to shrink your liver so that less of it overlaps the stomach, and also for both reasons. The NPO after midnight (or bedtime) the night prior to surgery is to ensure that your stomach is empty. Generally, the concern is that you could aspirate your stomach contents (from reflux) during anesthesia and end up with pneumonia. When you're having an operation ON your stomach, there's another obvious reason...your stomach needs to be empty so that no food is incorporated into the suture line, or spills into the abdomen in case of problems. Either way, you need to tell your surgical team if you don't comply with their instructions...you want your stomach and liver to be in the condition they expect when they operate, not have them surprised by a full stomach or a still-huge liver.

    Can I eat/drink?

@@mrstkgreene Those post-op instructions are so bad, they're almost criminal. Good lord, how are you supposed to have any idea what to eat/drink and how to nourish yourself?? I'm on my way out the door, but I'll snap a pic of mine and post it here later on. I'm so sorry your surgical team gave you such **** instructions. And pardon my language, but poor healthcare just infuriates me. And PS...you're going to get some great advice here...and some of it will be imparted rather harshly. Don't throw the help you need out because of hurt feelings, please? You NEED help with this, if that's all you got to come home with.

It's soccer in the Fall, Basketball in the Winter and of COURSE baseball in the Spring and Summer. We're doin' it right! :)

    Who decides surgery type?

There are some considerations regarding different surgeries, and BMI and co-morbidities are a couple of those considerations. I never considered a DS, was leaning heavily toward sleeve vs bypass due to my age, weight/BMI and lack of severe co-morbidities...happily, my surgeon agreed with me and was thinking of sleeve for me as well. It's a decision that should be made by the two of you, based on your knowledge of yourself and your habits and your surgeon's professional expertise. The one thing that needs to be clearly understood about WLS is that it's a partnership...your surgeon can do any of the surgeries and it will only work as well as the confidence you have in it and effort you put toward it. Good luck in making your decision!

    Large boned. ..

@DJ's Nana The family members who tell you this...are they heavy? Are they just jealous of the fact that you now have the ability to do something they can't? I'm so sorry they're not being more supportive...you WILL be able to get down to a size and weight where you feel comfortable wearing a tucked-in shirt and a cute belt! Heck, I've only lost 50-ish pounds and the difference is amazing! I've gone from a full, flabby size 16 bottoms and 1x tops to size 12 bottoms and medium tops and I'm still 70 lbs from goal. I can't even imagine what that size will be but I KNOW I'll start tucking in my shirts and loving the way I look very very soon Good luck to you!
  23. @@OutsideMatchInside I agree about people being sent home when they can barely drink fluids...the ones that really scare me are same-day surgery patients. My potassium bottomed out during the first night pre-op...I wouldn't have recognized what was going on at home. I had to be able to drink (and keep down) the clear Protein I was given in the hospital before I could be discharged, as well as walk around unassisted and use the bathroom. I ended up staying a second night and I think I needed it.
