  1. Oy, I hear ya. I have PCOS so my periods are hit-or-miss as well, and quite painful. I'm still pre-op so I can't speak to pain meds, but I find that walking at least a little bit takes the edge off the cramps. Mind you, all I actually want to do is curl up on the couch but getting up and moving a bit does help. *hugs*
  2. Hey, I'm in WV about an hour south of Pittsburgh

  7. Just got the news....I have one more nut class and then everything gets submitted to insurance, but there's a 95% chance my surgery is May 16. *squee* Just got real, folks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  9. Hope this isn't too much of a "necro" (raising the thread from the dead, lol), just wanted to say I'm in the same boat, having surgery to lose weight to get pregnant. I'm 38 and have no children, been married 16 years. PCOS sucks Good luck and baby dust to all of us!

    Post op FIRST time pregnancies

Oh this makes me so happy!!! Hubs and I have been trying for 16 years for our first! I have PCOS, I think I've had it all my life really but unfortunately I wasn't properly diagnosed until my early 30s. I'm 38 now, racing the clock My surgeon knows I want to get pregnant, he wants me to wait at least a year, but I don't think 6 or 8 months post-op would be so bad
  11. Oh gosh, that terrifies me. I'm having this surgery in order to lose weight so I can have kids (married 16 years now, PCOS is evil), if I went into menopause I think I would just break.

    Any May Sleevers yet?

I was expecting to have surgery in June (started my program in December) but the surgeon's office called me the other day; since my last nut class is May 2nd, they said I don't have to wait the whole month and can have surgery in May! No date yet, but still gosh darn excited! Probably aim for later in the month.
  13. Ah, clothes. I've never been a girly girl fashionista type; 95% of my wardrobe is jeans and t shirts. My work clothes are scrubs, no real choice there. Growing up, I always hated that I couldn't fit into my cousin's stylish hand-me-downs, man she had GREAT clothes! But she was trim and athletic, whereas I was a baby whale. I'm pre-op, but believe you me when I start really slimming down, I will be taking a couple more fashionally-skilled friends and giving my wardrobe a shot in the arm! 14. Goofy question, I know, but I don't have any, and I'd like to know how soon I should worry about getting some. I have a semi-well-fitting upper denture that I only wear in public, for cosmetic purposes, and I have no lower denture. I literally gum all of my food and there's some stuff I just can't do (most nuts, tough meats, thick crusts on bread, etc). My VSG will be in late May/early June and I know I'll be fine for the first 6 weeks at least, while I'm on liquids and soft stuff, but sooner or later I'm going to need to actually chew my food, to break it down completely for my new tummy. I have a plan worked up with my prosthodontist to have implants put in my lower jaw, just haven't been able to afford it yet, and I'll have to be on soft foods while I'm healing from that as well. So I'm trying to work out a timeline and would just like some idea as to how long after surgery I should plan for this procedure. Thanks so much.
  15. I'm a sugar addict myself and I'm heavily leaning toward the sleeve, for a few reasons. With the sleeve, a very large portion of your stomach is removed from your body; that part of the stomach produces ghrelin, the "hunger hormone," so your appetite will be greatly reduced. I'm also not a fan of having my intestines rearranged and whatnot, to me the sleeve procedure seems much simpler. Also, I like that there's not as much trouble with malabsorption; the main reason I'm having surgery is to lose weight in order to have kids, and it just seems like being pregnant with a sleeve would be at least a little safer than pregnancy with a teeny little pouch, I'd worry about starving the baby I also have PCOS and have heard awesome things about the sleeve and PCOS, I've talked to women who have been sleeved and it's like the best thing they've ever done So yeah, unless the surgeon can convince me otherwise, it's the sleeve for me!

    June - July sleevers?

Sounds like me! I thought my surgery would be June (started the program mid December) but my last nut class is May 2nd and they said I didn't have to wait another month, I could have surgery in May. So woohoo!
  17. You're lucky, my family thinks I'm nuts My husband is uber supportive, and I have friends who are behind me, but my family thinks surgery is extreme and I should just diet and exercise. Pfft.
  18. My last nut class is May 2nd, so I'm looking at a surgery date of late May/early June SO excited!

how important are teeth after surgery?

Yeah, my surgeon didn't mention anything about teeth in the introductory session, but in the last class I attended the dietitian said "think of your teeth as your new stomach" since your stomach will be so small, you need to chew up your food to a liquid consistency in order for it to be digested. That worried me, because right now all I do is basically mash it up until I can swallow it. Soft foods shouldn't present a problem, but I can't even do raw veggies for the most part
