My 600 Pound Life: 2016 Season
audaciousmarie replied to Inner Surfer Girl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think the main reasons why he refused to do the surgery on Marla was because she refused to walk and was not losing the weight as fast as she thought. I think its so important be as mobile as possible before doing any type of surgery because blood clots are no joke. Hypothetically speaking, if Dr. Now had completed the surgery on Marla when she continously refused to walk into his office (when instead she always had a team of paramedics escort her there and she couldn't even stand long enough to get weighed) as soon as she was post op she would have still refused to walk making her even more suseceptible to blood clots that will instantly kill her. In my mind it makes so much sense why Dr. Now tries to wait as long as possible to do the skin surgery and I commend him for not just being a cash cow and feeding the patients dangerous pipe dreams (just my 2 cent ) Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App -

I felt so bad for Laura when her husband was being so unsupportive. I get that for so long he was her caretaker and that its hard for him to get used to the change. However he should be proud of his wife for the strength she has to change her life. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App -

As someone who has lost 90 pounds TWICE but gained it back TWICE I completely understand the frustration when people see you can lose weight without surgery but then wonder why you still want surgery. My answer to this question is losing weight and keeping it off are two different things. My hope in getting WLS is that it will be a tool that will help me keep the weight off (I can lose just fine). Congrats on your pre op weight loss. I would just say that you need to be comfortable with the decision you want to make for your life. Your family should not be so focused on understanding why you want wls but they should be focused on supporting you in your journey. I don't always understand what my family members do with their lives but I will be there for them every step of the way. In this case you are trying to better yourself and your well being so I don't really see what's so hard to understand about that. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App -

Hi Michea! Yes I am going through Kaiser Fremont. Aww I'm sorry you felt rushed by the nutritionist. Next Friday there is the support group at Kaiser Fremont (I hear its a really great group and there is a lot of vital information provided at the meeting). At this point I am getting the sleeve (even though everyday I question whether I should get the bypass). I don't have a surgey date yet but I'm pretty much on the last steps of the process before getting a date. I just need to complete the psych appointment (May 17th) and an EKG. My surgeon is Dr. Hahn. Who is your surgeon? What surgery are you thinking of getting? Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App -

Hi there, Yes I just started with Kaiser Fremont at the end of April. They scheduled my psych appointment yesterday (I reached the weight loss goal the surgeon set for me). So far my experience with the Kaiser Fremont has been very pleasant. I am still nervous about the surgery though and I didnt expect the process to be moving along as fast as it is. I just saw the preview episode for next week's episode and Dr. Now fires Marla as his patient! I've never seen him so annoyed. So I guess Marla is still playing victim smh. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App -

So glad you had your consult and it sounds like it went well! I too was surprised that there was not more pre op testing required (all I have to do is an EKG and my regular labs are updated). My psych appointment with Kaiser is May 17th. My last go round with a different insurance I had to do an Upper GI, sleep study, EKG and also the regular labs. I am glad to see that other Kaiser patients don't have to do so many pre op tests and I'm not the only one. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App -
Did any of you have to try prescription weight loss pills before looking into the gastric sleeve?
audaciousmarie replied to amy120's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I tried phentermine about 6 years ago. It made me very sleepy (but that could just be me). I think if you have a large amount to lose, phentermine is not the best option because it loses effectiveness after 12 weeks. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App -
Who Is Your Surgeon?

I don't have a date yet but my surgeon is Dr. Hahn Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App -
Hello Everyone, I thought I'd introduce myself on the site. This is my second go round at weight loss surgery (I was approved in 2013 for gastric sleeve through UHC but I chickened out the morning of surgery). This time I'll be getting surgery through Kaiser (the Fremont location and my surgeon is Dr. Hahn). In comparison to my experience last time I feel more ready for the lifetime changes I need to make in order to succeed with this surgery. I have been overweight all of my life. I've managed to lose 90 pounds twice, through low carb dieting and exercise, but each time I gain it back. I am really grateful to be able to participate in this support board as it has made my journey to surgery so much easier because I see there are people out there going through the exact same things I am. Study of Season 8 "Biggest Loser" Contestants re Weight Regain Causes
audaciousmarie replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You bring up a very interesting point because the surgery is done on our stomachs and not our brains. I think its quite interesting insurance only requires one visit to a psychiatrist and that is before surgery (nothing after). I completely agree that patients are monitored and cared for as far as any physical changes after surgery (i.e. complications) but what about mental changes? Complications can occur there too. If a person doesn't understand why they have a problem with their weight (and how to fix or properly cope), having surgery or going on a diet is only putting a band aid on a gunshot wound. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App That is why I spent a year in therapy before surgery, and continue therapy for my food addiction issues. It's a shame so many people suffer even after surgery with head hunger and end up gaining it all back. I think that could be avoided, I care so little about food now, because I found other things in my life to keep me occupied/busy. Have to fix the brain first. That's not easy either, it took me 48 years to even admit I was an addict. Yes, just like a heroin addict. I was hiding food, I was lying about food, I was spending a LOT on food, I am an addict. Simple as that, and once I admitted that, life got a hell of a lot easier. You made some excellent points too, putting a bandage on a gunshot wound....that's exactly right. I admire you for being so in touch with your emotions and not being afraid of them. I too am a food addict. Its almost harder being a food addict than being a drug addict because at least there is the possibility to go cold turkey from drugs. We cannot just quit eating food so the temptation is always there. I am going to make sure that I make regular therapy appointments apart of my post op care.
