My insurance is UPMC For You and I called the company and they said if your BMI is under 50 then you have to have a supervised diet for 6 months before you're approved (along with all the generic testing). But they said if your BMI is over 50 (which mine is) that you aren't required to have the diet. My question is, has anyone from the UPMC Altoona been in this situation before? Did the surgeons there still want you on a diet plan for a period of time before the surgery? What was your timeline from the seminar to surgery? I assume they're going to at least want a month so they see how I do on a diet and how dedicated I am and to do pre-op stuff, but I'm not sure other than that. My seminar is on April 20th so I'm not expecting to see the doctor until next month. I'm really anxious just to get everything started and have the surgery already.

So I've been trying to get more Protein into my system and get closer to the surgery diet as I can while I wait to start the process. I'm on the keto diet but I'm having problems getting my protein in. Which one of these 3 would you guys choose? I know everyone loves the Premier Protein ones but it bothers me that they have more carbs in them than I've seen others contain. Nature's Best Perfect Zero Carb Isopure GNC Pro Performance 100% Whey Protein Premier Protein Whey Protein I'm probably making this harder than I need to but after being so unhealthy for so long I want to make sure I'm getting as many nutrients as I can the best way that I can.

UPMC Altoona (In Pennsylvania)

Sorry for the late response but haven't been on in a while. Do you mean that if I have health issues I don't need the 6 months? I have sleep apnea that's been related to my weight. -
Need help choosing my protein shake.

Thank you so much for all of your advice! I'm gonna try and get the samples for the Isopure to see if I like it, and I'll get others so I know how they taste. I'm kind of a 'if it's edible I'll eat it' person so hopefully I won't be too picky with the shakes either. -
At the very beginning, What can I expect?
Taltyana replied to lovestohike's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I was 14 I went through all the loops to have the surgery but never went through with it. (This time I am.) But during that process for me, I'd meet with the doctor monthly to do weight check ups and I'd also meet with a nutritionist monthly. I did all of my testing early into the process so they knew if I needed to work on my heart or anything like that. I've had a heart murmur all my life so I also had to see a cardiologist as well. I don't know how common of a thing it is but the first month I started, my doctor admitted me into the hospital for 1-2 weeks (can't remember which) to get me into ketosis safely and teach me how to eat on the ketogenic diet. After that and the testing it was just normal check ups etc until the pre-surgery time where I ultimately backed out. (Depression and being a stubborn teen makes you not wanna work on your body a whole lot.) -
Three Weight Loss Surgery Maintenance Models - Abstinence, No Dieting, or Mindful Moderation
Taltyana replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Until I can be 100% positive that I can be #3 I'm going to be in the #1 category. I know it probably seems a little strict but I know that I don't have a lot of willpower around food currently so I have to abstain as much as possible. I'd like to be #3 eventually and know that I can eat healthy with special occasions sometimes but like I said, willpower. I'll get there one day. -
Is my passionate love affair with food over?!?!? Are we breaking up?
Taltyana replied to YumiMumi's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I'm worried about missing my old favorite foods, but the way I've been trying to think about it is I'm going to gain new favorite foods and things to enjoy. It won't be in the large amounts but I'll learn to appreciate/savor it more. And I also won't feel like I NEEEED to eat all the time either, because my stomach won't be the size of Mexico. Also a thing to remember is the way you're eating right now won't be forever. Eventually you'll be able to make meals (albeit very small) and you'll learn to enjoy those too. Also I've heard from a lot of people that their cravings change after the surgery and their favorite foods just aren't appealing to them anymore. But even if this isn't the case for you I'm 100% sure you'll do amazing on it.
