The nails can show signs of many deficiencies and health issues. For example pitting shows that one may have psoriasis. White flecks is usually a sign of zinc or B1 deficiency or damage to the nail. Horizontal lines can indicate a diet deficiency and vertical lines can indicate a Protein deficiency. If they are dry and brittle, an essential fatty acid could be lacking. Its quite interesting really... i always have a look at my nails when i am feeling run down. When i had a zinc deficiency my nails were shocking! I am no doctor... just speaking from experience and prior knowledge. .. it is imperative that one consults with a doctor if you have a concern.

Recommended Daily Vitamin Intake
NeedaBreak4Me replied to NeedaBreak4Me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon has us on different amounts too.... This is the general basic recommended daily intake to get your nutrients... not wls specific or individual specific... everyone should check with their surgeon what their specific requirements are ☺ -
How do I tell my surgeon he screwed up?
NeedaBreak4Me replied to thomas1984's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my post op consultation the other day and my surgeon and i were actually talking about this. I had asked him why i seem to be able to eat and drink a decent amount of food than others (i get satisfied with half cup) He explained that as an ex bander the band causes damage to something in the esophagus and when we get sleeved we don't feel the restriction like a virgin sleever. According to him there is a loss of sensation there for us.. so we don't feel it as strongly... therefore his suggestion was to measure the food so i do not overeat and not to completely rely on sensations On another note... your surgeon does not cut your tummy by sight.. he uses a bougie to guide him for size and does it according to the curvature of your stomach... so he technically can't make it way to big without him realising. I hope this helps -
Band or Sleeve? So confused :(
NeedaBreak4Me replied to ready?set.go's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the band.... and now have the sleeve. .. the difference is like night and day! I honestly would not recommend the band to anyone.... i was a success story on the band... and it functioned well for 5 years... then i had complications and had it out... gained a lot of weight back... and completely screwed up my metabolism... i am now sleeved and so far so good. From someone who has had both, the sleeve is much more low maintenance and the restriction is different. Restriction with the band was more uncomfortable than it is with the sleeve. If you want to know more let me know -

Recommended Daily Vitamin Intake
NeedaBreak4Me replied to NeedaBreak4Me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Calcium is generally around 1,000 to 1,200... but one also needs to consider the calcium one is getting from their food.... out of all the Vitamins.... calcium is the least of my worries as i am eating lots of calcium rich foods. -
I have just created a thread with the proper daily Vitamin and mineral values. This might be better as a guide. http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/370003-Recommended-Daily-Vitamin-Intake

I'm not sure how many calories I should be getting in.. My NUT never really discussed that and he's out of town until Monday... My BMI currently is 39.8. I'm meeting a majority of my protein goals and getting in 72 ounces of liquids a day Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Well your first step should be to contact your NUT it is unacceptable that they have not given you enough info to make the right choices. Secondly i would suggest that you log your food daily, so you know exactly how much you are consuming. You could be consuming hidden calories or sugars that you may not be aware of unless you are logging your food. At 4 weeks out, don't worry too much about the weight loss... you are still recovering and your body is in shock

Because it looks like she us developing spoon nails... as well as nail discolouration which is almost always indicative of a zinc deficiency... if she had the white spots I would say with quite some certainty that it is a zinc deficiency. I also noticed she has slight "beaus lines" which is also indicative of a zinc deficiency Usually when you are zinc deficient it plays havoc with your nails. Magnesium, zinc, Biotin deficiencies usually show up in the nails. If you have an Iron or folic acid deficiency you will see lines on your nails

Looks like you need some zinc in your diet... Are you taking Vitamins??
-
Don't do anything drastic... just stick to getting your fluids and meet your Protein goals... your body will lose when it wants to. Are you getting enough calories? Are you a lower BMI?? Cause if you are... weightloss will be slower. I am 6 weeks, almost 7 weeks out and ive lost 28lbs... and doc said i am doing very well considering my lower BMI... but i am sticking to the plan 95% of the time

Cool looking forward to it.... i am happy to "review" and give you an honest opinion... and make suggestions. Sometimes we think we are projecting ourselves in a certain way... but are being perceived in another. Anyone else need help with their profile?. .. i think it would be a fun exercise

@@Daveo Maybe try a different approach.. maybe a cheeky comment or something funny... in a pool full of fish. .. sometimes one needs to try something to stand out from the crowd... update your profile to let your true personality shine. Imagine how boring it is look through 50 profiles that say... "Hi, im bob... i like dogs and long walks on the beach..." If it said something like.. "hi, im bob... and i can do somersaults whilst holding my breath under Water whilst juggling" that would more likely get my interest to read further Work with your strengths... make a personal list to yourself writing down your strengths and weaknesses.... then choose a few key ones to update your profile. As they say... if you keep doing what you usually do.. you will continue to get the same results Let's give it a go.... Write me a short synopsis of your personality to try and get my interest.... I'm sure all us women are willing to give you constructive criticism or advice (and for the meanies out there... i mean constructive NOT mean)

A stall AND weight gain, 9 weeks out
NeedaBreak4Me replied to GSleeve822's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree it could be hormonal... i was due a week go... i am late... and i gained 1 pound this week.... so it quite possibly could be it... I just wish my cycle would go back to normal already!! I've been feeling bloated and PMS for almost 2 weeks now! -
Is your surgery a secret?
NeedaBreak4Me replied to Tara1992's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah... still 6 weeks, going onto 7... but a wls veteran of 6 years.... there isn't much that i didn't go through when i had my previous surgery... so i know to stay away -
I can only speak in terms for what works........or doesn't work for me. Others may have had different results. Cheese, while being an ultra-low carb, moderately high Protein food............is primarily composed of fat, thus calorie dense. That make it's something I avoid. Nuts are in the same category. Both are too calorie dense for my current goals. Down the road a piece......if and when I'm below goal and trying to maintain through increasing calories (as crazy as that concept seems to me now.....as an obese dude........may be valued low carb, higher protein add ins to my diet). For me......at this point in my battle against my weight.......chicken and fish are my two main sources of good Proteins. Admittedly, I use and abuse eggs for Breakfast proteins about as often as I use Protein powder shakes (difference between work days and off days). Positive is the only way to approach the way we find ourselves.................... Just a friendly suggestion..... i know that your diet is focused on weight loss, but you might want to add a little fat if you still have a gallbladder... fast weight loss with low carb AND low fat is a recipe to stop the gallbladder working efficiently ☺ I wouldn't want you to have to go through further surgery if it can be avoided by a tiny change. @ Yes it is a good idea to avoid fruits high in sugar during the weight loss phase.... but berries in general are lower in sugars than some other fruits. ... so if you must have fruits... you have made the better choice. I personally believe its important to get a balance of nutrients from food... fruits included.... berries in particular are very good in that way... you get sweetness, low sugar and a good deal of antioxidants, flavonoids and micro nutrients

Is your surgery a secret?
NeedaBreak4Me replied to Tara1992's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@CHM I thought about taking jerky... but i am little cautious of it as i am still so early out... i think it might be too dry at this stage. I love going to the movies, that was one time i did actually have a food ritual... i would always have popcorn, and dark chocolate and a bottle of water. I wonder what else we can supplement instead... cheese, jerky, roasted chickpeas/broad beans (im obsessed with the roasted chickpeas atm... a salty high protein fix.. feels like im being naughty... but im not) -

Drinking/Eating
NeedaBreak4Me replied to areader4life's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually called my surgeon about this the other day... i had some silly questions like... If i am having a high tea... can i drink tea and have a finger sandwich... or if i am choking or food is stuck.... can i drink to get it down or if a medication says take with food... can I drink to get it down etc The answer from my surgeon was... yes... but only a small amount... Basically they explained that i need to wait 30 mins prior and post and drinking won't kill me... but it will cause food to move through the sleeve too quickly. So i would suggest you call your surgeon and see what their opinion is. -
Is your surgery a secret?
NeedaBreak4Me replied to Tara1992's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay... so i have been sitting back quietly reading this thread without any damn popcorn..... and i will add my 2 cents worth from being on both the teller and non teller side. I haven't told anyone other than my family and 1 close friend... and i don't plan to tell anyone else. For me its not that i am ashamed, i just don't need the additional pressure and judgement from people. When i had the band previously i told the world... and i regretted it... there was too much pressure. .. i would get judged... like if i ate something naughty, if i hadn't lost enough weight, if i attended a social function the people would watch to see what i was ordering and what i was eating. I got sick of being labelled the wls person, everything revolved around my food and weight loss .. i was not seen as me anymore.. but as the fat friend/colleague/acquaintance who got skinny and took the easy way out. This time around i decided i would only tell the people closest to me and that i know will love me for me... not for my size. I decided that i would tell the truth.. i am eating low carb, smaller portions and exercising. I do not need anyone invalidating my hard work this time around. Regardless of whether someone is a teller or non teller it is your body, your choice and what you do is no ones business especially anyone who is a screen name on a thread who doesn't know you from a bar of soap. There is no right or wrong choice or answer.... and everyone should respect other peoples personal choices. *chomps on her cheese stick dramatically* -

[/url]Hey, stick around. This forum is more entertaining than TV and cheaper than going to a movie. *Taking orders for popcorn and drinks* Darn, can't have popcorn, can't have soda, can't drink through a straw, can't have chocolate, can't have chips...... Whats the point of going to the movies now!! *sits quietly eating a cheese stick* -
I was on the train the other day and the guy sitting next to me received a call from his wife... She literally abused him for 30 mins for missing his train and being late home for dinner (it was only 5.30pm!!). She went crazy... she even threatened to punch him in the face!! Total psycho! As annoying as it is... i was entertained for the whole ride home. .. poor guy couldn't say anything back... but the whole carriage could hear everything anyway! I felt like turning to him and saying tell that psycho you aren't coming home for good... he only missed his train, it happens!! Crazy!
