@@Kaze Haha i think i probably have now contributed to this lol But what gets to me is that many of us had surgery for "health"... and by eliminating an entire food group... can not be possibly healthy... it might not affect you now... but what about in 10, 20 years? NUTs need to educate their patients on the difference between the good and bad stuff... not just use a blanket statement by saying "nope... never again" If you have the correct lifestyle, attitude and make good choices.... there is no reason to need to cut out a whole food group. Older generations all ate potatoes, Pasta etc.. and they didn't have the problems we do... because they ate in moderation... were physically active ... didn't overdo it...simple rules

Gosh.... another...omg you ate carb/sugars/fats... so you will gain 300 pounds and fail your sleeve/bypass/band.... argh i am so sick of hearing this sort of stuff... I think that it is a very unhealthy approach to eating... there shouldn't be a "never again" food... it should be... i will choose to the best foods for my body, and can have all foods in moderation. Carbohydrates are important for heath, its just about choosing the right type of carbs..... there is nothing wrong with having carbs from veggies, whole grains and whole foods.... its the highly processed crap thats the problem. I think NUT are not educating people on the difference between good carbs/fats and bad ones.... This is not a temporary thing, its a lifetime thing... and yes during the active weightloss phase it is better to choose the food that will benefit you..... But once you are at goal, have learnt new habits, can eat "bad" foods in moderation without binging... then why not! Avoiding all types of carbs/fats/sugars is not healthy and sustainable long term Rant over lol

Tryptophan is nowhere near as effective as it's played up to be. The reason people feel sleepy after a Thanksgiving turkey dinner has nothing to do with Tryptophan and everything to do with eating a full day's worth of calories (or more, for the dedicated fatties) in a single sitting. "When all is said and done, usually more has been said than done. " I never mentioned turkey... and the amount in turkey are too small to make any difference....i have turkey all the time..turkey doesn't make me sleepy. L-Tryptophan is whats needed to make serotonin and it is also used as a sleep aid for insomnia... i suggested that perhaps this is what is contributing. -

Ok... so i was reading though some posts... and i noticed something. I saw the Protein drink that your surgeon has got you on and i had a quick look at the ingredients.... Could it possibly be that is what is causing your dizziness and tiredness.... i noticed that it has L-Tryptophan in it... and i know for a fact that it makes you tired and sleepy.... also, it concerns me that it is not a protein isolate... so you wouldn't be absorbing the complete 18g of protein in it... How much of that stuff are you having for each meal? Can i make a suggestion that you call your surgeon and ask if you can change to a normal low carb protein isolate.... if he says yes, i would go out and buy some... that protein might be the issue... -

Anytime.... ???? The veterans here are actually wonderful people who do have a large amount of knowledge among them, and i would suggest to anyone to listen to their words of wisdom, they have been there and done that... so hearing them out helps us learn from their mistakes. Unfortunately though there have been many people lately that have been mean to the veterans because they didn't like what they were told.... even when what the vet was saying is absolutely correct... some people jump on expecting validation for their errors... then when they don't get it... they call the vets names or get all hissy about it. Unfortunately because of this we are losing many vets and this is a disservice to newbies because then instead of learning from others mistakes, they will learn from their mistakes the hard way... But, its all good... we live and learn.... -

Ok, i am going to put my 2 cents worth.. Was eating bacon 1 week out wrong... yes Is the post op plan of being on liquids ridiculously difficult.. absolutely. But, one thing that virgin sleevers may not realise is that... for people who have had the band previously there is less restriction than there is for a person who has never had wls. The esophagus is looser and the nerve endings are less sensitive... so the hunger is there... not head hunger.. but actual hunger for some. I know when i was newly sleeved i was suprised that i had actual hunger.. even after reading on these boards that supposedly the hunger is gone. Bacon was probably not the best choice, perhaps yoghurt or milk would have been a better choice to take the edge off. Obesity for some is an addiction, and like with any addiction changing habits is not so easy... i always say the mental part of wls is the hardest part... you are fighting years of habits, instincts to eat, social expectations, using food as rewards... the list goes on. However, the eating bacon does not seem to be the issue here... what seems to be the issue is accountability...... if you make a mistake.. which we all do because we are human... is owning it... yes you ate bacon at 1 week out, that was very risky, yes you compromised your healing, put yourself at risk of perforating your stomach... but owning it is what teaches you better habits, owning it will help you understand that you made a mistake and that you learnt from people that it was wrong and to evaluate why you decided to stray from your surgeons plan. However, to people who have replied, there is no need to be cruel about it... i am sure the OP knows what she did was wrong.... but maybe us more experienced wls patients can try and help to find the root of why they strayed.... I have no issues with tough love.... as long as it is done with some empathy...i have given and received it many times.. however, plain rudeness is unacceptable and having 40 people attack without offering solutions for next time could be the issue here too. Girl, put away the bacon, stop self sabotaging and next time you feel like you want to stray, jump on here and maybe we can help give advice on what you can have without putting your health in jeopardy. -
In a bad depression slump...
NeedaBreak4Me replied to venomousflowers's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I actually agree with you..... i do not have a history of depression... but i went through a phase of malnutrition a few years back..... and i was severely depressed.... my B Vitamins, vit D and mag were really low.... Might be worth looking into.... if you have depression and meds are not working, the added stress on the body might not be helping.... i would suggest having bloods tested for all vitamins... and ask your dr to review your meds -

Oh its a HE! Boys lose soooo much faster than us! 5 sleeps! How exciting! How are you feeling? Have the crazy thoughts kicked in yet? -
Has anyone used a Powerplate post wls? Not the cheap vibrating machines, the actual acceleration training machine. If so, how did you find it? Was it useful? I used this machine years ago when i had the band, and found it tightened and toned things nicely.. just curious if anyone else had success

You are welcome anytime... You will find that the story is a common one around here... once you have been around for a while you realise there are some common themes.... regret, struggles, stalls, relationship changes, worries, self esteem issues, psychological changes etc... Seems that we are not all that different after all... we all come from different countries, cultures, religions, upbringing... but the issues are very similar... so you are never really alone here ????

Headaches during liver reduction
NeedaBreak4Me replied to ChrisInc2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
With our clinic it depends on the persons starting weight.... basically the assumption is.. the bigger the person the more liver shrinkage required. Is that other sleever bigger than you? If you are allowed to have it... be thankful...i reckon some pre op people would sell their children for some chicken hahaha. As long as your surgeon allows it... then you are doing the right thing... you should be fine. -
What you have said completely resonates with me..... I was overweight my whole life... tried and failed many many times to lose weight... I grew up being the social outcast, never fit in, would constantly be the wall flower... had my guard so high up that i never allowed anyone to get close enough to me to form real friendships. I made the decision to have lap band 8 years ago as i was constantly sick, and on the verge of developing diabetes..had PCOS, was acne ridden, hairy, had no self esteem and did not love myself at all. i took the plunge and did it... and it was one of the best choices i made! I lost all my weight, got to goal, completely reversed my insulin resistance and PCOS. The most surprising side effect of losing weight is that i finally learned to love myself. Not to say it was an easy road, i lost many friends, it changed me as a person, i no longer was a people pleaser, i stopped caring so much about how others viewed me, i subconsciously was selfish for a while.... and in time i gained my confidence, and that helped me get out of my shell... i made new friends, found new interests... and became the person i am today. Fast forward a few years, my band failed and i had it removed... i gained a decent amount of weight... and all my self esteem, locking myself away and insulin resistance and pcos came back! I stopped socialising, i started isolating myself, i lost my groove and could see myself falling back into old habits... So, let me get to my point.... and answer your question... yes... wls can reverse your diabetes and bp... it has proven to be so for many people.... and you will find that it does not only benefit you physically, but mentally and psychologically.... As someone who has been on literally both ends of the scale, i can tell you that excess weight does not only affect you physically it affects you mentally as well. You have taken the right steps in regard to your health.. and you are still early out... things get sooooo much easier with time... yes it takes some time to adjust to your new style of eating... but in time it becomes second nature... Be kind to yourself and your body.. try not to be too hard on yourself... the improvements will happen in time... just understand that initially there is an adjustment period. I really wish that all your health issues get resolved and i hope in the near future you can come back and say... that aussiegirl81... with all her rambling might be onto something. Giving you lots of love and support... if you need anything we are here for you ????

Anybody use a Powerplate for Toning?
NeedaBreak4Me replied to NeedaBreak4Me's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Wow! i am impressed! Were your ears burning Powerplate Au hahahaha Fitness first, however i have a friend who said that i can use their personal one at their home gym... so i am considering doing that instead... the issue is that there isn't much resources for the various exercises for it.... can you send me some links to the manuals? etc Like i said in my earlier posts... i am going to be the weight loss surgery guinea pig for the next few weeks and i will report on my progress... however i think i need to get all the exercises possible to create a decent plan with the various target areas -
So....here it goes..... i need to have a rant to people who understand. I had my sleeve done 8 weeks ago... have lost 33lbs last time i checked.. haven't weighed myself in a while.. but i am sure I've lost more since..... 55lbs till i reach goal. I was 209 when i last checked and an (Australian) size 14 which is quite loose on me... and i am 5'7" so i wouldn't say i am very big by the usual standards... i haven't told anyone other than my family about the surgery to avoid negativity. So today we had a family get together and wore something i have not been able to fit into in a while.. i was feeling great, really proud of my progress and excited about finally being able to fit into my usual clothes. One of my family members i have not seen since my first week post op... and this was the comment... "What was the point of you getting surgery... you arent even skinny yet, what was the point of getting your stomach cut off if you are only going to lose so little in 8 weeks... in my eyes YOU ARE STILL FAT" Omg.... really? The rest of my family were commenting that it's really starting to show and i am starting to look what i did before i gained weight after removing the band. So, i basically said "i am not allowing you to belittle my hard work, i won't be subjected to your negativity and will not tolerate being put down" and left. Why do people feel the need to say such stupid things..why can't they just keep their mouths shut! It upset me... because i was finally getting my confidence and groove back

Feelings of should I?
NeedaBreak4Me replied to betterme38's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Completely normal and healthy feelings to have prior to surgery.. I had them all.... - ill never be able to enjoy food again - i won't be able to be social because i can't eat - what happens if i get sick and i need an ultrasound and i need to drink lots of Water - if i choke on food, will not be able to drink to wash it down - I'll never enjoy food again -i can do this without doing wls -maybe i should do the pre op diet long term -im not that big, its too drastic -is being slim and healthy worth cutting off my tummy -am i just really vain The list goes on.... Well, let me tell you... i was wrong, i sucked it up... had the surgery, recovered, healed and now i feel normal.... i eat, i socialise, i am living life exactly like i did pre wls... the only difference is that now i get full on smaller portions... and feeling healthier and more confident within myself. What you are feeling is normal... allow yourself to feel these feelings... and remind yourself as to why you got here to begin with... do a list of pros and cons if you are really considering backing out. Good luck with your surgery.. let us know how you go -
Biggest change or challenge from band to sleeve ?
NeedaBreak4Me replied to iamjohnbamber's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi... i hope you are recovering well. I was revised from band to sleeve... and the difference is like night and day. When i had my band removed i did have a "phantom" band for a few weeks... but once that subsided my tummy was like my pre band tummy... normal. Now that i am sleeved and healed... it just feels like a normal stomach... i can eat and drink without feeling odd sensations, pressure or food getting stuck like the band. Earlier out when i was healing, if i ate too fast or didn't chew properly i would get a little "stuck" feeling.... but nothing like the stuck feeling with the band... sort of like.. stuck without that heavy pressure. For me, once i passed the first 3-4 weeks... everything just became easier.... now i feel like a normal person, who just eats smaller portions.. Water isn't a issue and i am meeting or exceeding my daily goals. One thing i will mention... as an ex bander... you will find you can fit a little more food/fluids than virgin sleevers... as we have less sensation in our esophagus because of the band.... so its important that we measure out food until we can adjust to reading the full signals... -
@@composed It makes me wonder though how many people deal with or are in abusive relatonships and have been "broken" by these people to a point that they are too scared to cease contact. I remember being so petrified when they were around, walking on egg shells practically... somehow after my first surgery i gained confidence and became stronger.... now i won't tolerate abuse or anyone disrespecting me... regardless of who they are... Its a funny side effect of losing weight... i found my inner strength and voice.... has anyone else become stronger as a result of wls?
