With any luck, I will be having RNY sometime between mid-June and late August. I'm wondering when I will be able to return to work after the surgery? I understand, this is an individual thing... but, my job is one where I am in front of 4 computer monitors and talking on the phone most of the day. No heavy lifting. Not much activity. (Probably one of the reasons I am in this position in the first place!) My concern, we had a baby 2 months ago and I took 2 weeks off work (to support my wife and bond with my son). My employer does give a fair amount of paid time off. But I am not sure how happy they will be when I tell them I need yet another 2 weeks to a month off of work. And you know the stigma.. "for a surgery that is 'elective', I should just put down the cheeseburger and get back to work".. Does anyone think it's possible to return to a desk job within 7-10 days? What are my odds? I'd like to hear of everyones experience in returning to work and your energy levels. Again, minimum energy needed for my job, but of course I cannot be falling asleep.. lol Thanks!

Recovery Time After RNY
DannyDelToro replied to DannyDelToro's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I agree. I guess I will go about it that way too. Some may feel this is "elective" but those of us that need it to save our lives of course feel different. My employer does not need to know, I'm sure that's the legal side of things. Thanks! -
What made you chose bypass vs sleeve?

@@LisaMergs I heard of this too, when I went to a WLS Seminar last month. None of the Surgeons at the Bariatric Center for Excellence I am going to have done this yet. But they added it to the "options" and let everyone know at this point it is a self pay only procedure... i.e.. they know no Insurance is covering it. From what I could gather, they made it sound like it was a procedure for someone that needed to loose a little weight. Like someone that is 40lbs overweight, has money they don't know what to do with and a Class Reunion in 6 months. They also said it's completely an outpatient procedure. That's all I recall... RE my comment on this post - Acid Reflux is the reason I am having RNY instead of a Sleeve. I was actually way more afraid of the RNY being done vs the Sleeve.. but when I found out it was my only option and the best option I guess.. I am not so afraid anymore. Needs to be done, I need my life back. -
Seems there is no way to rush this. I thought I could too... finally got Insurance coverage for this, and that kicked in on January 1. So I thought back in October, let's get everything done so I can get on my way and have the surgery as soon as I am covered. Nope, they wouldn't even start the tests or any of the pre-op things until January 1st. I went ahead and started on the 6 month diet plan on Jan 7th, so at least that can be done by June or so. I bet I won't even have the surgery until August at this rate. Dr's office called to schedule all the "testing", and I am really fairly healthy.. and the testing alone doesn't wrap up until the first week of June. Ugh.... THEN they send off to Insurance for approval. I did hear from someone that attended the seminar I went to up here in WI that your Insurance plan, being the "of Illinois" variety is a rare example of BCBS not making you do the 6 month Dr supervised diet plan. That's a plus for you anyway. Have you contacted Insurance to find out all the requirements? That may end up in delay as well. So if you haven't done that yet, be prepared! Good luck! Hope you find a way to get things moving faster!
