help reading my sleep study report?
Oooh_snap replied to Startingover!'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
haha that was me. i doubted i had sleep apnea, but when they came in and talked to me I averaged 66 times an hour and as many as 87. i couldn't believe it. I knew mine would be a 2 night stay if i had apnea, just because it is easier on them that way. If you don't fall into a deep enough sleep fast enough the first night then they can't put the machine on you. Your next study they will start you on the machine from the moment you get into bed. As for your sister. anything averaging under 5 events an hour is considered normal. Most doctors don't treat it if it is under 12 events an hour unless they have severe apnea while in REM sleep. Which REM is typically where people will have the most events because the throat is the most relaxed and is most likely to "collapse", since it is the deepest sleep. She will have to wait to hear the results from her doctor, most sleep techs know what is significant enough to put one on the CPAP, but insurance can be different about what they will insure. My plan pretty much just says "if the doctor thinks it should be treated, then we will pay for it" about sleep apnea. anyway.. lol now that i have written you an essay i guess I should quit, but good luck with your CPAP Tritation! -
Has anyone been denied BMI 40 with no co-morbities?
Oooh_snap replied to Rascal76's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've got aetna which is supposedly the hardest to get approved with. Don't let that discourage you. A lot of people with Aetna still get approved. Sometimes it takes an arm and a leg to get insurance to approve people, but a lot of people fight it and get through. There are also so many insurances that people don't have to battle with. I don't want to make you feel down. I just wanted you to know it happens, but not as often as getting approved! So keep thinking positive. Things will work out. -
help reading my sleep study report?
Oooh_snap replied to Startingover!'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pretty much it says you dont have sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome. Unless they managed to mess up and put that you didn't have any events. which is very unlikely. Like my study says Respiratory data; The average rate is 15 per hour (normal is less than 5). Supine rate is 86.5 per hour with a non-supine rate of 5.5 per hour. The non-REM rate was 5.0 per hour and the REM rate was 66.0 per hour. But since the rest is not filled out there may be something wrong with the report. All you can do is call your doctor and ask. My Doctor does sleep studies in 2 parts.. You come in one night just for the study.. then you come back another night and they put the machine on you. So call your doctor and confirm with him that these results are right. It seems to me that Atleast if anything you would have had atleast 1 leg event. But that is from my experience with transcribing sleep study reports -
Has anyone been denied BMI 40 with no co-morbities?
Oooh_snap replied to Rascal76's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was denied with a BMI of 40 with no co-morbidities. But I was denied because i haven't had a BMI of 40 long enough. (not even a year) But the other way my insurance approves people is if they have had atleast a BMI of 35 for 2 years with 1 co-morbidity. Which I have been over 35 and i had a sleep study done and have very severe sleep apnea... So we will have to see if I get approved after that. it is always good to have a sleep study done in my opinion before you go under anaesthesia. Just check with your insurance on what their requirements are. If you get denied you just have to fight and fight. But Hopefully that won't be the case! Keep us updated -
Hey everyone, I am Alisa. I am 20 and live in the Richmond, VA area. I have been on the boards at obesityhelp.com but there has been a lot of fighting about what surgery is the best over there, and I wanted to come here and meet new people and see how lapbandtalk.com is =) I haven't had my surgery. Right now I am battling with Aetna to get approved, and I can't wait! Hope everyone is having a great day!

For those with BMI 35-40?
Oooh_snap replied to ronwifey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have definitely heard the "you aren't big enough for surgery" deal. I have done weight watchers, I have done jenny craig, I have taken pills and exercised 3 hours every night while going to school and working, and obviously it just keeps coming back. I have exhausted my options. It's really none of their business if we are "big enough or not" A surgeon isn't going to do it if you don't qualify. So that should tell them that you can have it. Living with knee pain and back pain is no good, so hopefully your friend will understand that and isn't just being jealous. I haven't told one of my bestfriends either. I just don't know when I want to tell her. I told her I was thinking about it and she said absolutely nothing, so I never told her that I really am doing it. I had another friend who went through gastric a while ago and my fiance had the nerve to say I was just doing it because i didn't want her to be skinnier than me.... that was the most nerve racking thing i have heard so far. Don't worry about other people, Do what is right for you! -
