    Protein Protein Protein

At that stage my plan has me drinking protein drinks as my fluids and purees for food.
  2. @@Sally85 Sorry for everything you are going through. I hope your husband is emotionally stable at this time. I encourage therapy for you - with someone who has experience in emotional eating. I can't imagine how difficult it is for you. Take care!

    For the ladies...

It's common. It won't be a big deal to anyone but you! Maybe it'll be over by Monday or very light. I expect mine at the time of my surgery too.
  4. @@StacyO It will be extremely important to stick with your pre-op diet but many of us have fatty liver and there should be no reason surgery would be cancelled because of this.

    Uber-Noob to gastric sleeve

@@WhatTheFreud I'm confused about your surgeon not repairing the hiatal hernia until you've lost weight. Did he recommend how you should go about losing weight? Your issues with your esophagus and stomach will need to be seriously considered prior to any weight loss surgery. I would worry about resolving those issues before considering getting weight loss surgery (unless they can repair everything at the same time). I'd schedule an appointment with a bariatric surgeon to discuss and see what they recommend.

@@kathileelyo People who lose the weight on their own (without surgery) have a 5% chance of maintaining that loss. Those are really crappy odds. This is by far not the easy way out - so try and explain that to them. WLS is just a tool to help you - you still need to do the work. If they are worried about the surgery itself - it's safer than knee surgery. You are doing this for your health. Good luck!
  9. @@LifeRejuvenated I only told my SO and one sister for the months of prep. I told my Mom in July and since getting my date a few weeks ago have told my boss and one of my nieces. You don't have to tell anyone else - and it's not something you need to decide now anyway. Good luck on your journey!!!

    Struggling

@@elle2769 Take the anti-nausea meds - even if they make you sleepy! You need to get in enough Protein and liquids to heal and for energy. At 2 weeks out - you'll most likely be sleepy anyway - so no need to be nauseous too.

    Fresh juice suggestion please

@@bubblegirl96 Juice is not recommended on our post-op plan either. We are allowed any no calorie, non carbonated liquid (PowerAde Zero, Vitamin Water Zero, Crystal light, Infused water (can do whatever flavor you want), decaf tea (unflavored/flavored / hot or iced), sugar free popsicles.)
  12. @@quirkhorse I was told that I shouldn't even be focused on calories at all. That the important thing is to get 60-80 gms of Protein and at least 64 ozs of non-calorie liquids. Be sure you don't do any exercise without being cleared by your surgeon.

Can we please talk about Starvation Mode for a minute?

I would be very surprised if the malnourished/starving people in 3rd World Countries are getting 100 calories a day - that's true starvation. They have no reserves where we have plenty! I could go quite a while before I truly starved. @@MaryCatherine I am not sure that's true for everyone. There are alot of variables to consider - and I don't think calories to lose/maintain are as simple as that.

    Confused

I believe it. I gained 5 lbs overnight with my period (and coming off BC pills).

Can we please talk about Starvation Mode for a minute?

@ I don't think you can compare malnourished / starving people and obese people who are eating too few calories (and in what is termed "starvation mode"). We are not truly starving. I'm not sure you can compare typical weight loss with post surgery weight loss either - as we often lose 10% of our weight in less than the 12-20 week timeframe as mentioned in your point #2. Would that mean that you max out sooner and therefore - it is best to get your calories up soon after surgery? I have no idea one way or another - I just know I don't want to be stuck eating 800 calories a day in order to lose/maintain weight loss.
  16. @@crissy79 You have not been healthy for a few months either (if I remember correctly - you've had significant complications) - which could certainly be a problem (both with the depression and low sex drive). Hopefully once you are feeling better medically - you'll feel better emotionally as well.

    Before Your Surgery Suggestion!

@ I have learned alot outside of my Bariatric Program (through my own research and this forum) - but I had a full session with the Nutritionist to review the post-op diet through 6 weeks. I will meet with her again at 1 month post-op to discuss the next stage. I'm very grateful that my Program is comprehensive and has everything under one roof (psych, nutrition, physiology (haven't used), surgeon, etc.). I also have to attend a 2 hour pre-op teaching class where I'm told they will review the post-op diet and instructions again. I can't imagine not having this knowledge before surgery. It is scary how many people either didn't receive this information or didn't pay attention to it. Thank you for posting this important thread - I hope many see it and take your advice.

    Date Moved Up!

@@Julie2879 It's normal to feel nervous, scared, anxious, etc. Think of all the great things that are yet to come - rather than mourn those that you may have to give up for a little while. You'll do great - stay strong and positive!!!
  19. @@SlimBra Yes - an abdominal binder. I am going to wait and ask about it in my pre-op teaching class.
  20. @@SlimBra Great news!!! It was recommended to me to get a front closure comfy bra (wireless) for post-op. I got sports bras on Amazon. I also picked up several different herbal/flavored teas including "Smooth Move" (to help with constipation). Congrats on your surgery date!!!
  21. @@Michelle50 Usually a Nurse or Medical Assistant will weigh you, take your vitals, etc. - then you meet with the Surgeon. Wear clothes that aren't too light - you want this weigh in to be your highest. Then when it's colder - wear lighter weight clothes under a sweater and remove your sweater before weighing in. In the next few weeks - we'll be wearing 5 lbs of clothes to stay warm!
  22. I'm sure I'll be hating them a few days into my pre-op diet but I have to say... Bariatric Fusion protein powder with skim milk is the best I've tried so far!

    Flip flopping family member(s)

@@Jane1979 I think when most people have a "food funeral" they binge on "bad" foods. I'm not having a food funeral but I am going to be saying goodbye to a few meals before my pre-op starts. My first "good bye" didn't go so well though - I had chicken carbonara with Pasta on Saturday (I did eat more than I usually do) - which last about 30 minutes before I had to run through Home Depot to get to a bathroom before a SHAT my pants! On Sunday - I had a "good-bye" to Pumpkinhead Ale (I might have another goodbye before next week). I will be saying good-bye to pizza (probably will only be able to eat 2 pieces) at my favorite place before my pre-op and most likely a calzone. I'll probably have a "see-ya later" party with Bloody Mary's this weekend. I've not gained weight - and don't plan on going on a bender before my pre-op diet starts - but I do want to enjoy some of my favorites.
