When Is Weight Loss Surgery the Wrong Choice?
KristenLe replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If it was done properly AND the person was honest - it should identify concerns. A good program wouldn't perform surgery until those were addressed. The Psych Eval should have to be performed by someone qualified in Bariatric Surgery. I think often it's just done to get the insurance to approve and not with the intent to make sure the patient will be a good candidate. I've read and heard people say they were alcoholics at the time of surgery. That should have been a red flag if anyone was evaluating. Like most things - money talks in alot of medical practices. -
Blood clots can be formed from an "injury" and in this case that's surgery. It also can be from lack of mobility (common after surgery). If you think you have the symptoms of a blood clot - call your surgeon immediately. Moving around frequently can minimize the risk and compression stockings can as well.

I was told to only worry about fluids and proteins and not calories. Eat very small portions (2-3 ozs.) even if you think you have more room. Protein shakes can be considered a meal on my plan too. Add protein powder to fluids instead of eating more food if you don't want to eat. Hang in there! -
I'm sure that's why she's lost faster. You're doing great - just keep following the plan. You have to get enough Protein and water to lose. Your goal was probably a little unrealistic but you'll get there soon I'm sure! :-)

I'm worried I won't meet the set goal for preop diet
KristenLe replied to Katrinakit's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I don't know... I just think 20gms of carbs in each shake is high considering what others have. Drink water with lemon to help with retaining fluids. You "only" have 5 pounds to go - you can do it! -
I would eat more protein (less crackers and pretzels) and you definitely need more fluids. Protein & water & exercise is key at this point.
-
My NUT suggested eating 5-6 small meals about every 3 hours. I was told 3-4ozs a meal. 1 - 1 1/2 cups seems like a large portion this soon out. You might want to take a PPI - it may be stomach acid instead of true hunger.
-
Absolutely - any non-caloric drink counts as your "water". Crystal Light, Decaffeinated Tea or coffee, Water with flavor drops, Protein Water.

Do they make you drink Optifast? It has alot of carbs compared to others. Lower carb shakes might help a little. For what it's worth - I think it's crazy to give you a weight loss amount pre-op. Do you really think they'll cancel or is it a scare tactic? -

When Is Weight Loss Surgery the Wrong Choice?
KristenLe replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think she was a poor candidate for WLS to begin with. I wish more Bariatric Programs required Psych Evals and therapy if issues identified. It is very possible she would have had issues with substance abuse even without the surgery. It is too bad she didn't address her significant mental health issues before surgery. Very sad situation. -
Day 8 of pre op liquids
KristenLe replied to Tssiemer1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's brutal - you're not a wuss! Can you have broth? Maybe something salty will help. I don't think I have to do a lengthy pre-op diet and I'm very glad. -

@@Rebekah 136 I bet you won't have a lot of loose skin - at 20 - it should still have alot of elasticity to it. It's great you're taking the opportunity to have surgery and change your life at your age. I feel like I wasted more than 20 years of my life being obese.
