I highly recommend the book Emotional First Aid Kit to life after WLS. I downloaded it to my Kindle and it's helpful - I'll probably read it several times on my journey. https://www.amazon.com/Emotional-First-Aid-Kit-Practical-ebook/dp/B0054RXXS0?ie=UTF8&btkr=1&redirect=true&ref_=dp-kindle-redirect

Psych evaluation required?! Why?
KristenLe replied to wndy2011's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
They didn't with all plans - that's what I have. -
Are you diabetic? They can sometimes screw with your blood sugar. I wouldn't be surprised if it made you hungry. All I can remember from mine was the pain.

It's not too late - and cleaning you out isn't the issue - it's to shrink your liver. Just stick with the diet from here on out. Good luck! Stopping the nibbling habit now will help you post-op too.

Psych evaluation required?! Why?
KristenLe replied to wndy2011's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I asked for counseling for emotional eating - which I am realizing I don't have as much of an issue as many others - and I'm finding that it's helping in other aspects of my life too. First time in counseling - should have done that years ago too! Lol -
Call your surgeon. It is probably nothing but don't take a chance.
-
Insurance. It sucks. I'm ready and just want it done.

I have to do a 6 month supervised diet so by the time surgery comes around I'm afraid I'll despise everything I'll be able to eat. Are you still on liquids?

Psych evaluation required?! Why?
KristenLe replied to wndy2011's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think a psych Eval should be done on everyone - I've seen a few post after surgery and clearly weren't a great candidate from a mental health, substance abuse or emotional/binge eating perspective. They should have had counseling beforehand. Someone who clearly has uncontrolled depression and anxiety with a binge eating disorder is not the best candidate for life altering, stressful surgery. Now when you talk about the 6 month supervised diet requirements - that's just the insurance making you jump through hoops. :-) -
I know...

I'm still pre-surgery but was told to eat very small meals/snacks 5-6 times a day. Concentrate on protein.
-
Stock up on Bariatric friendly foods and drinks. You don't need to just drink plain water - have decaffeinated tea (hot or iced), crystal light, flavored water, etc. Measure your foods so you don't eat too much. If you do a few times - you won't permanently stretch your stomach but you need to be careful not to continue to work against your sleeve. The smoothie wasn't the best choice because of the sugar - but you can make your own healthy, protein smoothies that will taste just as good. Concentrate on getting your protein and liquids (non caloric drinks). If you feel hungry it could be stomach acid - try taking a PPI or might be head hunger.

I would recommend going to counseling. I'm going for emotional eating. See what they say about you being ready or not.

1 week Post-op in able to get anything in

And the hair loss may have more to do with the trauma of surgery and the complications than nutrition at this point. -
1 week Post-op in able to get anything in
KristenLe replied to mmy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Cream of Chicken Soup can contain a fair amount of fat and that could certainly cause an issue this soon post-op (especially as one of the first things eaten). I was told to stay away from juices even in full liquids stage. -
I am still pre-surgery but dieting before surgery and living after surgery will be different. It takes time for your body to adjust to a low carb diet but once it does it really isn't all that difficult. With the sleeve - you have restriction so you won't eat the amount pre-surgery and you shouldn't be very hungry. You do need to change your eating habits but the outcome is well worth it to me. I can't do it on my own and rather not be needing a hoveround at 50.

How soon where you told you can have soft solids?
KristenLe replied to LaliGator's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
All programs are different. Mine has you on puree/soft foods much sooner than some others. -
Obesity Action Coalition has good appeal letter examples.

@@sweetdarling1983 I'm sorry to sound like a jerk but your husband needs a kick in the b@$%s! Tell him that his teenage-like "teasing" is hurtful and degrading. He's teaching your children to be disrespectful of you and to have an unhealthy attitude towards weight in general. You don't have to tolerate this behavior from him. As long as you feel safe - tell him how hurtful his comments are. Putting you down is not going to encourage you to lose weight and be healthy. Stay strong!

Getting back in the game.
KristenLe replied to SBTrac's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@SBTrac There's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. You're human! You got your head out of the sand by acknowledging you need help. Chronic pain is very difficult to deal with - from a physical perspective of course but also an emotional one. In addition to starting back to the basics as @@JamieLogical suggested - maybe try some counseling and holistic pain management (acupuncture, massage). Wishing you luck! -
Mini Gastric Bypass Questions
KristenLe replied to Tommy Joe's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sorry - I don't have any knowledge of the mini bypass but can help with #3 - yes, you can avoid dumping by avoiding the triggers (not always the same for everyone). #4 - I'm going to counseling to talk about mindless/emotional eating. I have 6 months before surgery so I figured I'd take advantage of the time. I just got home from my second session and feel like it might help. -
