@@eclecticwingtips The OP did say depending on your surgeon's recommendations for your situation. This thread was in reaction to advice given by a new post-op to others that was extremely unhealthy and bordering an eating disorder.

Are Your Family Members Overweight and Which of Them Supported You?
KristenLe replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm the only obese 1 of 4 children. My Dad has had difficulties with his weight but has been nowhere near as heavy as I am. The obesity definitely comes from his side of the family. My Mom is small. I haven't told either of them yet but will before surgery. I think they'll be supportive. The only family I've told is one of my sisters. She is small and has probably never weighed more than 140lbs but she works at it - eating healthy and exercising. She's been supportive. My brother is "chubby" but that's from an unhealthy lifestyle (built like my Dad too). My other sister is built like my Mom but taller. I'm by far heavier than anyone in my family (also the only one with PCOS). -
What should I be doing ?
KristenLe replied to bellabeans's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Walking is one of my goals too. As is using smaller plates to get used to smaller portions. I don't have a pre-op diet either. -
What should I be doing ?
KristenLe replied to bellabeans's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on month 2 - and I'm attempting to eat similar to how I will need to after surgery. My NUT wants me to do 50% Protein/50% Produce for my meals. She has me paying attention to labels - ensuring what I eat has less than 5 gms sugar and 5 gms fat. Be mindful of what you eat - eat slowly and not in front of TV or computer (this isn't easy for me). I'm also working on emotional eating issues. If you drink soda - you may want to cut back or give up before surgery. The NUT told me I should eat until I'm satisfied (but not full) and not to pay attention to calories. I'm also supposed to drink at least 64oz of water a day. I'm going to try doing this all until surgery (but I'm not trying to be obsessed about it). -
It could be dehydration. Are you drinking alot of water while you're out?

Sleep study not medically necessary?
KristenLe replied to Kellyann86's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you have any snoring, hypertension, depression, fatigue then they should cover it. -
@@VeroN86 Did they allow you to try different masks? I felt that say with the nasal pillow and full mask). I also start mine with a gradual delay - working up to my level over 20 mins and that helps alot. What machine do you have?
-
@@adav06GT I sleep on my stomach with mine (nasal mask). I feel the same way - slept horrible when I didn't use it one night last week.

There are several who have been successful. Do a search on PCOS and you should find a few interesting threads. I have been dieting for a month for my supervised weight loss program requirement for insurance and I lost 1 lb the entire month. So frustrating BUT my Nutritionist said not to worry - I will lose after WLS.

Ohio gal with June 3, 2016 surgery

As long as your lungs are clear - I can't imagine there'd be an issue. Hopefully with treatment you'll feel better very soon. -
Those who drink diet pop post-op {Only nice comments PLEASE}
KristenLe replied to Beck90's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Any Dr not concerned about you smoking doesn't give a shit about their patients! Why go through with major life altering surgery to improve your health and then smoke?!? Or did you have surgery to be thin and not for the benefit of your health? Because - we all look the same dead (and it's not a good look)! -
@@lakegirlmn I haven't had surgery yet but will be having the sleeve. I am not a sweet eater so we didn't think I'd benefit anymore from Bypass. You can slip back into old habits with both surgeries - they both are only tools to help us. If you have GERD and are a sweet eater - I would think Bypass would be better for you.

Sleeved Tuesday May 10th
KristenLe replied to kristiw14's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@kristiw14 You shouldn't have to make him understand. He sounds as though he's being self centered and childish. If you're more comfortable at home - stay home! I know I wouldn't want to be anywhere but home while I heal (especially when you have pain and discomfort). Let him be mad - he should be more concerned about your feelings and health than where you stay and his feelings about it. Stay strong - if he doesn't respect your decisions than he doesn't deserve you! -
The sleeve doesn't remove cravings @@tamila0624 . Cravings are head hunger - not physical hunger. Salsa is not bad to have as long as her sleeve tolerates it so if you're going to have a craving it's not a bad one to have.

Ask that your Surgeon do a peer to peer review with United. This is the insurance plans way of hoping you don't fight it and just go away. Ask them to provide you the plan details that indicate you have to have a comorbity with a BMI over 40 and what comorbities count. Appeal it as much as you can. Go to Obesity Action Coalition for some good info and resources. Good luck!

Those who drink diet pop post-op {Only nice comments PLEASE}
KristenLe replied to Beck90's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I can only laugh reading some of these comments. Smoking, pizza, cake and anything else is okay (YOU want what YOU want obviously) but diet soda is unhealthy and evil! Come on!!! Diet coke clearly is worse for our health than smoking...how have we not realized that before??!! [emoji33] [emoji12] -
Congrats - you look wonderful! I think 78lbs in 10 months is a great loss! And your body has changed so much - so the weight isn't all that counts - do you keep measurements?
-
Do you have any medical issues - GERD, diabetes? Your cravings may change after surgery but maybe Bypass is the way to go if you need a deterrent. I would be concerned of 2 things with Bypass - the malabsorption of vitamins and minerals and with a lower BMI - losing too much. What does your Bariatric Team recommend? My program has a NUT, Psych and surgeon who all help decide what surgery would be best based on their evaluations of the patient.
-
Try a little salsa on your eggs. Just eat a little bit and see if all goes well.

What Stage on you on?
-
Thanks. I can see that it's covered but can't get the info about what requirements I have. BCBS told me I had to do a 6 month supervised diet but when my surgeon's office checked they said I don't. I'm just concerned not having anything in writing and something is going to go wrong.

Psyche eval and anti depression meds
KristenLe replied to Autumn Riley Arnold's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please be honest with the Psych people. They're only trying to make sure you're a good candidate. If they have concerns - they'll want you to address them before having a life altering surgery. -
@@Acceber12 Yes - and the plan coordinator has been unable to get the details too. I called BCBS again and they told me my surgeons office would need to find out what was required for a prior authorization. It's unbelievable that they won't give me the info - I'm the policy holder.

I believe she was having her EGD (Endoscopy) through her nose. So - yes - her upper GI. But not her surgery. :-)
