  1. @@erinkath If you are able to eat eggs - then that's a great Protein source. The rice krispies are high in carbs (even though only 4 gms sugar) so I'm surprised they recommended them. With me - carbs make me crave all the stuff I shouldn't be eating. You will not fail - you've already doing great!

    Can't use CPAP after surgery

How much weight have you lost so far? I believe even the slightest weight change can result in a need for an adjustment. Also - what style mask do you have? I wouldn't change the setting yourself - especially if you have severe sleep apnea - my machine doesn't even let me change it. Look into getting a chin strap to help keep your mouth closed and if your machine has a humidity setting change it to see if it helps. I went to a Sleep Clinic for my testing and fitting so they've been very helpful to me (and easier to get through without going through pulmonologist). August is too far away to not be able to use your machine.

    HELP! Sleeve vs RNY

@@slvarltx I'm planning on the sleeve. After discussion with my surgeon, nutritionist and psychiatrist (all part of the Bariatric Program) - we felt this was good for me. I don't have reflux so that wasn't an issue. I'm not diabetic, not a big sweet eater, don't graze and only need the restriction (not the mal-absorption of deterrent of dumping syndrome). Hopefully all will go as planned - I'm really don't want Bypass.

    Uncomfortable Supper

@@rydersmama I think you played it right and hopefully the 2nd time will be a lot less stressful. No one should really be all that concerned about what is on your plate - and if they say anything just say you are eating healthier (end of story). I'm still presurgery and someone recently commented on how healthy I was eating (at work) and I just said "I'm trying". I didn't go into details as to why and that I plan on having WLS. I will be going to my niece's college graduation party on Saturday - and I don't think anyone will pay attention to what I eat (or don't eat). I think because of how much we ate in the past - we assume a normal portion will look like starvation to others.
  6. That's unfortunate you didn't get better information. You should be concentrating on high Protein / low carb. At your stage (if you are at the puree stage) - you could eat things like hummus, creamy soups (no chunks), cottage cheese, ricotta cheese (there's a ricotta bake recipe online), Greek yogurt (watch the sugars), eggs, sugar free pudding, and of course, Protein shakes. If you follow the typical post-op diet of protein first, low carb and get all of your Water in (non caloric drinks) then you won't fail. Good luck!

    Shakeology after VSG?

These aren't ideal and not worth it. They have 18gms (7gms sugar) carbs and only 16gms protein.

    1st day liquid diet

@@165B445 That's impressive!!! You should do great post-op!!!
  12. @@Angelica90 Usually, you fill out a few questionnaires regarding your eating habits and mental health. It is very important to be honest - don't try to guess what the "right" answer is - they are trying to make sure you are a good candidate (and could benefit from one surgery over the other), that you are ready to make the lifestyle changes required and that you will not have potential issues post-op. You will meet with the psychiatrist to review some of those same questions and also you will be asked about your personal history of obesity, your previous weight loss attempts, eating habits (are you a binge eater, emotional eater, etc), your knowledge of the surgery you are having - from pre-op, actual surgery, recovery, etc. They will ask you about your support system. Make sure you ask any questions you may have or if there is something you may need help with - this is a great opportunity to learn whatever you can to ensure you are successful - from an emotional and behavioral health perspective. Good luck!
  13. @@Nurse_Lenora I have paper thin nails pre-op (they can bend). I don't even need to file them or trim them because they just peel off. :-( You may want to check your Iron levels - iron deficiency can cause issues with your nails.

    Is it just me?

@@snugelkin You will need to eat more frequently or you will have issues with your metabolism and weight loss. Whenever I used to say I was hungry, my skinny Mom would say "have a coke" - like that was the answer. Anyway - maybe once you stop drinking the soda - you will want real food.
  15. @@erinkath If you are on full liquids - you shouldn't be eating eggs or Cereal at this stage. I would stay away from cereal all together (very high in carbs) and especially rice krispies (which expand in your stomach) - this is not the time to be eating cereal. When you eat carbs - your body then craves carbs and you'll feel hungry. Full liquids you should be drinking Protein shakes (watch the sugar content), creamed Soups (no chunks), broth, sugar free popsicles, non-caloric drinks (watch sugar content with juices). It really is important to follow the plan - you could end up with significant complications! Stay strong!

    Personal Questions for after surgery

During abdominal laproscopic surgery - they expand your abdomen with gas. After surgery - usually the only thing that gets rid of the gas is walking/moving around. Nothing will help prior to surgery and Gas X works for some (but it could only be a placebo effect). The shoulder pain is when the gas moves around in your body cavity and presents as shoulder pain. I don't believe taking a stool softener pre-op will help. Ask your NUT or surgeon what you can take post-op to help with consitipation. I would ask your surgeon about sex. Please be careful - because weight loss surgery can increase fertility - so be safe! I've never seen anyone ask about oral sex - and I had to chuckle. I think the action of sucking is different if you are drinking/eating through a straw (brings air into your stomach) than oral sex. Good luck with your surgery and recovery!!!

  18. Forgot the article... http://www.helpguide.org/articles/diet-weight-loss/emotional-eating.htm
  19. Here's a good article about emotional eating. My NUT told me to eat every 3 hours but very small/measured portions. It takes 20 min for your brain to know your stomach is full - so don't eat until you feel full of you'll end up over eating. Liquids go through the stomach faster - so you can drink more than you could eat. Get your protein and water (non caloric drinks) in and you'll do great. Be sure to ask your NUT what and how much you should be eating at this stage (every plan is different). Good luck to both of you!

    Question...

Who's the appointment with - Nutritionist, Surgeon?? Is it close to your surgery? It could just mean they modified their appointment system or this visit type has a longer duration or that it triggers the staff to do a different workup.

    1st day liquid diet

@@jessjames Every Program has their own requirements and even some differ by patient in the same program. Consider yourself lucky - many have liquid only pre-op.
  22. KristenLe

    Portion Size

Ask your NUT how much (ozs) you should be eating and stick with that. Measure everything, eat slow and stop when your portion size is gone (or before). It takes about 20 mins for your stomach to notify your brain you are full.
