What I wish I had known...

That was probably your Psych Eval. Therapy/Counseling can be very helpful if you have a good therapist. I found therapy much more helpful than nutrition (although that was because I knew most of what the NUT had to say already). @@TracyBar - I'd recommend counseling if you can find a good psychologist familiar with Bariatric Surgery and emotional eating.

    Sept. 2016 vsg

I've been through Psych and Nutrition counseling (April-June). Approved late June. Now I'm just waiting for pre-op testing (Upper GI series. EKG - 8/10) and blood work. Last step is pre-op with surgeon and a pre-op class. It's been a little slow since insurance approval. I'm getting anxious for a date.

    Well..... decision made!

Our Program was very thorough and made it clear that we are at risk of replacing one addiction for another. That many find they have issues with alcohol, gambling, shopping addiction now that they can no longer "feed" their feelings. If anyone has any plans of WLS - I would certainly hope they research enough to know the possible concerns post op. I recommend this book which deals with the emotional aspects of living after WLS. https://www.amazon.com/Emotional-First-Aid-Kit-Practical-ebook/dp/B0054RXXS0?ie=UTF8&btkr=1&redirect=true&ref_=dp-kindle-redirect
  4. Many of the rude, mean and nasty posts are not from vets. Why are we making this out to be an Us vs Them situation?! I'm disappointed that we are going to lose the valuable information of many on this forum because others take every comment they don't agree with (some not even directed at them) as "mean" or "bullying". As already said - text is often misread (with inflection and emotions) that may not be intended by the poster.

    Can't lose the 15

I went to the Psychologist who was part of my Bariatric Team. I'm lucky that I go to an inclusive Program that has everything available (Psych, Nutrition, Surgeon, Exercise Physiologist).

    Does anyone regret their surgery?

"@@Crochet Queen" Your type of surgery is "new" and not yet covered by insurance, correct? If you were to do this again - would you have gone with the traditional sleeve?
  7. I'm pre-op for sleeve but I can't imagine anything hurting more than the gallbladder attack I had before my emergency GB surgery. I don't even remember post-op pain.

    Can use some recipe advice

@@CarlAllen_95 I am pre-op but bread would be a big no on my plan. It looks good though (I'm hungry! ????)
  9. @@fatgirlsvelte I was asked to write a list of foods I "couldn't live without". All I could come up with was pizza and calzones (stromboli). My therapist also had me write a list of all the things I wanted to do after weight loss. The second list is much longer (and keeps growing) and makes me realize - HELL YES - I can live HAPPILY without pizza and calzones! There's healthier alternatives for most foods we "shouldn't eat"! You're going to be a great success!
  10. Communicate! He has no way of knowing exactly what is going on with you! Your hormones are all out of whack. This is the time to talk - let him know what you're feeling! But - as others said - you had surgery - he didn't and you will be around temptation forever - you will need to learn how to deal with it. Good luck!
  11. @@hbrhonda That's the attitude! I'm so glad you decided to go and had a great time! Continued success to you!

    Can't lose the 15

Actually - counseling/therapy can help with emotional eating. I highly recommend it pre-op if you are having difficulties. Find a therapist who works with Bariatric patients.

    How to quit sugar ?!?!?!?

@ Buy some pickle juice popsicles! They're great for hydration! Im not sure when they're allowed. I am hoping I still like pickles post-op.

    Post intubation pain?!

@@Lindsay86 Do you have any sores in your mouth? Could it be thrush?

    Up 2 lbs?!

I don't think that's enough calories. Your body could be in starvation mode. Fluctuations are normal though - you can go up and down a few lbs just from water retention.

Hopefully! My pre-op appt with surgeon is on the 14th.
  18. This is a form of an eating disorder. Please don't continue to do this.

    How to quit sugar ?!?!?!?

I'm finding I am craving SALT more than sugar. One would thing that after five years, I would have a handle on this ,but I find that "Craving" is different from hunger (which I do NOT have). The one thing that helps me from woofing down an entire bag of Lays is to eat some salty cheese, such as Feta. Any other suggestions???? Pickles!!! ????

    Best Decision I Ever Made.

@@nursey10465 Congrats on your success!!! You look beautiful!
  22. @@Mjohnson4631 At 5 weeks - my plan has me eating 3-4ozs 5-6 times a day (every 3 hours)and 2-4ozs protein drink (as my liquid) 30 mins after each meal. I'm still on puree until week 6 or 7. I would skip the protein bar if I were you - they often have too many carbs. Replace that with something less dense (cottage cheese, string cheese, tuna). Congrats on your loss so far! Oh - and we aren't allowed nuts at that stage (I believe it's more of a healing/staple issue than a nutrient issue).

Day 1 of pre-OP liquid diet

It depends on your plan - mine says never but I think that's extreme.
