    I swear this place is

I just saw that post and was going to ask if it was a joke. It's got to be a joke, right? I think there are a bunch of surgeons out there who need to do a better job screening their patients, because clearly the message is not getting through. Either that, or there are doctors out there who have no regard for their patients and are doing a half-assed job of preparing people for life after surgery. chicken 5 days post op. . . . I just can't . . .

    Newbie to gyms. Freaking out!

Just one word of advice. You do actually want to build muscle in addition to weight loss. You don't necessarily want to "bulk up" but the more muscle mass you have, the better for your metabolism which will help burn fat. Don't be afraid of doing some strength training. Just keep it light and easy until you build up your strength and stamina Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. My initial goal was between 90-100g a day. I'm down to 125lbs and my surgeon now wants me at about 85g a day. He's concerned that more will make my kidneys work too hard. I truly believe I would not have lost my weight if my Protein consumption was less than 85g a day Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Heartburn?

I wasn't afraid, but when making my decision I believed a restrictive procedure would work well for me. I didn't have any of the conditions that indicate RNY is the better option. I wasn't diabetic, sugar was not my "drug" if choice so the threat of dumping held no sway for me. I didn't have GERD. You are right that most surgeons require supplements for life with both VSG and RNY (at least mine does) but the threat of Vitamin deficiency is less with VSG because you absorb all you take in. Those were my concerns and why I chose VSG. I've now converted to RNY because I developed severe GERD post surgery. Was I happy about it? No, not at the time. Other than the fact it was trying to kill me, I had a perfect sleeve. No food issues, my labs as far as vitamins/minerals were perfect. But the acid was killing me. I converted 3 months ago and for the most part, don't notice a difference. I still take my supplements. I still eat Protein forward. I still avoid sugars. It makes me sad when people who are clearly suffering with reflux dismiss RNY out of hand. If I had it prior to my surgery, there's no way in hell I would have gone forward with VSG and hoped for the best. It would have been RNY from the start Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Tips to drink more water

I have a 30 oz cup with a straw(!) on my desk. I start drinking as soon as I get to the office and have to finish the first 30oz before I eat. 30 minutes after lunch I start in on the next 30oz and finish that before my afternoon snack. Finally I get in another 30oz before I go home. St times it does feel like I drink all day but I keep the cup in my line of sight and it helps me get into a rhythm Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Any So Cal Sleevers?

I was sleeved on 9/19 @ Cedars. they have an incredible program and I cannot be happier. Dr Cunneen is my surgeon and one of the best! I'm in Orange County and less than a month out but please feel free to contact me and I'll help in anyway that I can GSV surgery date 9/19/26 The program is amazing. Dr. Burch was my surgeon and he's been an incredible support. Great follow up. I'm 2.5 years post surgery and maintaining a 130 lb loss Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

@joy4you. I had my surgery at Cedars 2.5 years ago. Im 130lbs down and at goal. I'm in the sherman oaks area. I'd be happy to talk to you or answer any questions you have. Who is your surgeon? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  9. Has everyone here gone insane?? Is there a full moon that I don't know about? The posts this week are nuts. Unless I don't know what I'm doing, I went back through OP's posts and didn't find a single post from anyone else to warrant such a reaction. Is it a threat against future comments? The best way to insure turning people against you and getting never ending snarky comments is to threaten and fat shame here. I feel like the site has been taken over and we're all being punked. Threats, fat shaming, ice cream cake while on Clear liquids, eating swedish fish, because . . . you know . . . they're soft and you're hungry. I really can't take it anymore and don't know why I waste my time reading this site. I'm being punked, right???
  10. Under my plan, clear means clear. It was clear if you could see through it. Brothy, Soups, Isopure Protein drinks, adkins protein Water (Lift), sugar free popsicles. Can you see through it? My guess is, if you melted that down, you couldn't see through it. I don't mean to be harsh, and I don't think I've read all your posts, but so far, on clear liquids, you've asked about eating ice cream cake, chocolate italian ice and now fudge pops (I think those were all your posts, and if I'm confusing you with someone else, I sincerely apologize). I think you need to truly get your head in the game, get a clear understanding of what it takes to be successful at this surgery, meet with your practice's dietitian or NUT so you truly understand what you're doing. I know if you look at my post count, you may think why the hell is this person commenting. It's true, I don't post much, but I'm 2 plus years out from surgery and maintaining a 130 lbs. I think I know what I'm talking about. I'm only saying this things because I want you to be successful

    Is this reflux?

omeprazole did absolutely nothing for me. You might see if your doctor can give you one of the other PPIs (protonix or dexilant) and see if you get more relief.
  12. stacyrg2

    Is this reflux?

In my opinion this is not true. RNY is used to relieve, if not flat out stop reflux/GERD
  13. stacyrg2

    Is this reflux?

I'm sorry that your Dr. never told you that VSG may make reflux/GERD worse. Before my surgery, my surgeon questioned me extensively about whether I suffered from GERD. If I had, he likely would not have approved me for a sleeve. I can't say if your reflux will get better with time. I can only tell you that mine did not. It began 8 months after my initial surgery and I revised at the 2 year 2 month mark. In between I tried every medication combination possible, omeprazole, protonix, dexilant, zantac. Nothing worked Revision to RNY was the only thing that cured my GERD. I'm 3 months post revision and haven't had any problems with acid since I woke up from surgery. In my opinion, your surgeon was incorrect. VSG has a history of making reflux/GERD worse, however, since you've had surgery, that point is irrelevant now. I wish you luck and hope you find some relief.

    Is this reflux?

As someone who has had both VSG and RNY, I can tell you from my experience, your capacity will be about the same with either surgery. Prior to my revision, I could eat about 4-4.5 oz of dense Protein (I was 2 years post surgery). I'm now 3 months post conversion to RNY and I can eat between 2.5 and 3 oz of dense protein. You should not base your decision on what your capacity is or how much loose skin you may end up with (and there shouldn't be that much difference in the skin dept. between the two surgeries. You may lose slightly faster with RNY, but at the two year mark, the loss is comparable. If you're going to have loose skin, you're going to have loose skin.) As someone who dealt with severe GERD/Reflux after my VSG (but not before) I would NEVER pick VSG if I had a history of heartburn, GERD, reflux or whatever you want to call it. I spent a year of my life, coughing up acid, sleeping sitting up, restricting certain foods and generally being miserable. So, knowing now what I know, if I were in your shoes, I would select RNY

    No longer answering these questions:

I find myself typing responses and then deleting what I've typed. I agree with you, Bufflehead. I don't think like I have anything to add at this point, and these questions have been asked and answered to death. I'm going to go a step further (and this is just me). Reading posts here lately pushes me over the edge. I think for my own sanity, I'm going to have to take a step back. I am upset at myself for this since I feel I actually have some information to contribute, given that I lived with VSG for 2 years and then had to revise to RNY to treat my severe GERD. Unlike you, Bufflehead, I am a bit annoyed at the fact that some who post haven't read the past posts on the site or done any research about the surgery. Anyway, I'll keep my feelings about some of the questions to myself.

    Is this reflux?

I trust my doctor 100%. Not only because I did my own research and my research precisely matched what he said, but because my reflux has completely resolved after my conversion to RNY. But you have to make your own decision as to who to trust. I would hope that if you are letting someone cut into your body, remove portions of your organs or rearrange your digestive tract, you would have faith in that person. If you don't, or if they don't answer questions to your satisfaction, I would look for a new doctor.
  17. stacyrg2

    Is this reflux?

omeprozole is prilosec 100% incorrect. You are MORE likely to get GERD or reflux with the sleeve because the pyloric valve creates a closed, high pressure system. I was forced to revise to RNY from the sleeve because I developed severe reflux after surgery. If I had reflux prior to surgery I would choose RNY over VSG every day. Does VSG typically increase heartburn

My surgeon has significant experience and specializes in not only Bariatric surgery but reflux surgery as well. I had zero complications after either surgery. I fact I recovered significantly faster from my conversion to RNY than from my VSG. Yes my insurance paid for it. Which, frankly, was a shock to me. My surgeon does a significant number of revision surgeries and gets referrals from other doctors in the LA area. Reflux is the worst and I'm grateful every day that it's gone. you looking amazing!! what an incredible job you have done with the weight loss I'm having the sleeve at Cedar Sinai in LA. Dr Cuneen is my surgeon. Does VSG typically increase heartburn

Dexilant was the only PPI that provided me any relief although it never took my reflux completely away. My insurance stopped covering it and the prescription was too expensive without insurance, about $400 a month so I had to stop taking it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Does VSG typically increase heartburn

I had no reflux prior to surgery and no reflux until 8 months post VSG. Starting at 8 months I had increased acid and it got so bad PPIs offered no relief. I converted to bypass on 7/1 and my acid is gone. Knowing what I know now, if I had reflux prior to surgery I never would have had VSG. I would have gone straight to bypass. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. Well, apparently it's typical for you. There are thousands of people who are sleeved who never have a problem with reflux. Apparently you do. The sleeve is a high pressure, closed system which means the acid has nowhere to go but back up your esophagus. My acid got progressively worse until it was to the point where nothing gave me any relief. Breathing air caused me acid. The only cure, for me, was conversion to bypass Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm in the San Fernando valley and was sleeved 2 years ago at Cedars (converted to bypass on 7/1 for out of control acid but that's a different story). Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need support! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. I actually have more restriction. I was able to eat 4-5 oz of dense Protein with my sleeve but I top out at about 3 oz now. My recovery was much easier, but I'm in much better shape than I was after my VSG and I believe my healthy lifestyle helped my recovery. As far as weight loss my surgeon told me not to expect a significant loss. That may be because I was almost at goal. I gained some weight right before my surgery since because of the reflux I was eating a lot of crackers (they were the only thing that didn't cause acid with me). On the day of surgery I was 15lbs away from goal. I'm now 9 weeks post conversion and 4 lbs from goal Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
