I am two years post-op and STILL cannot drink for at least an hour after my meal. The only way I can get all of my Water in is to drink prior to meals. I got into the habit early on of having a glass of water every time I started feeling 'hungry'. This works well because sometimes it's just head hunger and having that hydration satisfied me. My first strategy when I feel "head hunger" is to sip on a glass of cold Water. My second strategy is to chew on a strong minty gum...this really curbs my urge to snack.
