But I'm not calling it an addiction. That was my point. Not everyone who over eats is addicted to food.
I don't think it's the same thing. Also, as one of those people not particularly addicted to food, I never got much of it and I still don't. Sometimes I look at trigger foods and think "I want that" but then I turn away and forget all about it.
I don't intend to get treated for my hobby of doing triathlons.

Not if the reason is physiological IMO.
What I see is that some people are overweight mostly through being very hungry or not having a strong satiety sensor. This leads to yo-yo dieting, which leads to be being obese and (sometimes) having an unhealthy relationship with food. For these people, WLS is usually enough. They now aren't hungry all the time and they feel satisfied. They weren't truly addicted or had a compulsion triggered by emotions. So they adjust to the new reality and thrive.
Other people are in the gripe of something stronger and more mentally based. These are the people who sabotage themselves or trade one addiction for another. These are people like that gal on LBT who would binge eat until she vomited on a regular basis and finally lost her band (and then went ballistic and got banned apparently). Just putting a band around her stomach wasn't enough -- she needed to work on her head.
Of course, there is everything in between as well. But most people that I've seen adjust just fine eventually and don't develop true addictions.
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Doing something to the point where it controls you and is destructive, not positive. That's a true addiction.
I think people, in general, through around the word "addiction" too casually. Maybe it's a sore spot for me because I have so many true addicts in my family and I've seen what harm true addiction can do. So when people talk about being "addicted" to shopping or exercise when all they really mean is "I like it a lot!", well, it bugs! :001_smile:
I exercise 7.0 hours a week and I'm working on doing it every morning and every night. But I am not addicted to exercise. It's my hobby and I have goals and I am doing what I need to to meet my goals. If I overdo it one day, I take it easy or take off the next day. If something comes up and I can't make a scheduled session -- like my son's thesis defense on Thurs. night, I'll try to make it up, but I won't go nuts to make it up and I won't sacrifice his happiness for it. So it's not an addiction, IMO.

I think the incidence of transfer addiction is actually pretty small. Most people who suffer from it were truly addicted to food in a way that was more of an eating disorder than what most of us experience.
I don't think buying a lot of clothes when you need a new wardrobe counts either. I think you'd have to do something like buy 7 purses all almost identical that you couldn't afford because you couldn't help yourself. (And there are people who shop like that.)
It's the lack of control to the point of destructive behavior that makes it an addiction.

A really common problem immediately pre-op is how to get all your Protein in. One of the reasons that it is hard is that a lot of Protein Drinks taste horrible, especially immediately post-op when our sense of smell and our taste buds are heightened.

One way to find a Protein Drink you like without breaking the bank is to get samples and try a lot of them. Where can you get samples?

I have also heard that Syntrax will send you a sample pack of their products for free or a small charge, but I've never been able to find the info on how to get it on their site. I think you have to contact them via email or phone to get the samples.

In terms of buying protein in stores, GNC sells many of their Proteins in individual packets and in smaller bags. They will also let you return any Protein Powder you buy from them even if it's opened. So you can try it and, if you hate it, you can return it.

Jay Robb makes single serving packets of their proteins. I bought them at Vitamin Shoppe.< /p>

Dr. Cirangle is my doc and I love him. I don't have a band, but I don't think that will make a difference in how long it takes. He says with insurance it generally takes around a month. Some of that time is spent submitting and getting approval so it's going to depend on your insurance company though.
The pre-op tests are pretty standard. There is variation based on your medical history but at a minimum you should be getting a physical, an EKG, an X-ray or Upper GI, and lab work. Women have to have a pap and mam within the last year. Everyone does a NUT consult where they go over the diet and a psych eval as well, even if your insurance doesn't require it. They have an in-house dietician and counselor you can see, but you can use your own too.
The after-care program is awesome and it's why their results are better than published averages. They have support groups all over the Bay Area every month. There is a newsletter too. In addition, you have full access to the on-staff dietician and counselor, pretty much as much as you need them. Fills are included too. Dr. C likes to see his band patients every month -- some docs make you wait 6 weeks in between fills and that can be frustrating and often leads to people getting off track.
You get so many months of after-care included in your program fee. I don't know exactly how many. It's a least a year, but more likely two. I was self-pay for a sleeve and my price includes two years of after-care.

When I was growing up, there was no McDonalds at first. When one opened up, it was a really big deal to go to it. We did it maybe 3x a year. My mom always cooked. I don't think the food she made us would meet today's standards of healthy, but it was considered healthy at the time. (And who knows what will be said about today's diets when our kids are adults with kids of their own.) We rarely had soda and other junk. We didn't have dessert with every meal every night.
My parents did everything they could think of to control my weight as well. None of it worked.
The thing is, looking back, I wasn't *that* fat and I'm pretty sure, if they'd just left me alone, I'd have gotten through puberty and slimmed out. Instead, they nagged me to death and I went on my first diet when I was 13 ... it started my trend of yo-yo dieting and I'm also the shortest one in my family. I have to wonder if dieting when I was growing didn't have an impact on both these things.
I know our modern lifestyles have made the problem of obesity worse, but that's not the entire story. I also think it's convenient to blame the parents when kids are overweight (or do anything we object to, really, that kids do) and it's not always that simple.
Think about your own childhood -- did your parents try to control your food to "help" with your weight problem and did it work? I'm guesing "Yes" and "no". :001_tongue:
You can't force another person to eat or not eat. You can control the food you give them, but, unless you control their entire environment, there are limits to your control even over that.
It's just a very complex problem and it's largely biological in nature.

    Multi-quote isn't working for me! :confused1:
First of all, I think it's really popular to bash on the current generation but today's kids are better behaved than my generation. They take less drugs, commit less crime, do more volunteer work, etc. Teenage pregnancy rate are down...
As for putting kids on diets ... it didn't work for us so why do we think it will work for kids today? I don't think that's the answer.
I think the answer is to change society. This includes fighting for smaller portions at restaurants, making it less acceptable to go out to dinner so much or snack so much on the one hand, but what we really need to do is throw out that damn food pyramid that is so carbohydrate heavy and get kids into an active life.
Moving more is really the key IMO. You can overcome a lot of bad nutritional advice if you exercise regular and it's just a natural part of your life.
But also, we have to accept that the average worker isn't out tilling the fields or digging stuff up from mines (and, if they are, they have machines to do all the heavy stuff) and so doesn't need a carbohyrate based diet.
And, on a related note, I found this article today and I thought it was appropriate to this thread:

MacMadame got a reaction from LadyAngela67 in Old Band out -- New Realize Band In
First of all, not every surgeon implants the Lap-band with a fill.
Secondly, not everyone who has a Lap-Band that was implanted with a fill has restriction so their bands don't all "work right away". They also don't necessarily get to their sweet spots earlier than some other patient who didn't get their band implanted with a fill. It will depend on how often they go in for fills, how aggressively their surgeon fills, and how must restriction they need overall.
Third, some people who get their bands implanted with a fill find they have too much restriction and can't take in any liquid in the hospital, have to stay an extra day, and have to get it all taken out. (This happened to a friend of mine just this month.) So implanting a band with a fill is not necessarily a good thing. Like most things in life, it depends on the person.
There is no evidence that aggressive fills cause erosion.
When J&J bought the Realize band, they made some improvements to it. It's not exactly the same band as the one released to market in 1996 (not 1994). In the meantime, because the Swedish band was so popular in Europe, Allergen made some changes to the Lap-band in order to make it more like the Swedish band which they knew J&J was going to release in the US.
Various studies of the two bands show that the average EWL is about the same.
You are someone who posts anonymously on a message board only to trash one band over and over with misleading and inaccurate information. You rarely post on LBT about anything else, in fact. I don't think the people who chose not to listen to you, but to their surgeons are in need of anything. They are very sensible, in fact.

    Dr. Huacuz is on the top of mine and he's the first 10 entries too. :wink2;
But I'd also avoid anyone associated or formerly associated with a Betancourt clinic, particularly: Contreras, Pompas, and Lopez.
I'd also avoid verboonen because of his arrest for insurance fraud. If your doctor has no integrity, then how can you trust him to cut off most of your stomach?
Then I'd eliminate anyone who hasn't been doing the sleeve for at least 3-4 years and has done less than 250-500 of them. Let someone else be their learning curve. Oh and anyone who uses a 40 f boughie or bigger.

I take my Calcium and my flax seed capsules together and my multis and everything else together. (Everything else tends to vary.)
You don't want to take your Multivitamin at the same time as the calcium because the calcium will inhibit the absorption of the Iron in it. But you can take Biotin at the same time as your multi. You also don't want to be taking more than 500 mg (give or take) of calcium citrate at the same time as your body can't absorb it all.
    This is my schedule:
AM: 2 calcium citrate pills & 1 flax seed oil gelcap with Breakfast
Lunch: 2 Multivitamins, 1 probiotic, anything else I'm taking (which right now is nothing)
PM Snack: repeat the calcium & flax seed oil dose
Dinner: repeat calcium & flax seed oil
It would be better if I split up the Multivitamin into two doses but I like having an extra slot. If I forget to take anything during the day, I can take it at night with my evening snack. My surgeon said it was okay to do it this way.
