Wife Swap - "Undereducated, over-opinionated and overweight."
MacMadame replied to kiz's topic in Rants & Raves
I know someone who went on Wife Swap. She is bat-shit crazy. I'm sure that's why she was picked. -

I think that's why a lot of people who get the DS get it. The stats. Well, but they are guys. Seriously, when I was working out 2x a week, and got to goal with Nutri/system, I was on about 1300 calories to maintain. When I went up to 1500, I started gaining. And now I'm older, have yo-yoed about 5 more times and I'd be surprised if I need more than 1200 calories with regular working out. But I watch all my numbers like a hawk so, if I need more, it will be obvious and I'll eat more. It's not that hard. Unfortunately. :tt2: It is, but she's a pre-op. Most of them obsess over this and try to talk themselves and their surgeons into getting a bigger sleeve than normal. Not because they are married to food, oh no, but because so-and-so said they'll have less complications. (Even though clinical evidence doesn't support that.) But once they have the surgery, most them get that switch thrown in their brain too. Hopefully, your friend will too. -
I used to be 5' 1.75" Then I had a kid and I was 5' 1.25". Then I had another kid and I was 5' 0.75" and would be written down as 5'. But when I decided to get WLS, I was suddenly 5' 1.25". That's up with that? I am the shortest person in my family over the age of 13. My mom is 5'4" and her mom -- who grew up during the Depression and it turned her borderline anorexic and then later suffered from osteoporosis -- was at least an inch taller than me when I last saw her. DH is 6'0" btw.

Hey, don't be hatin' on the Tina. And E isn't very big. I'm a DDD which is an F and you can see in my avatar that I'm no where near the size of Fake Boob Woman.

I went to Pilates. Boy have I missed it!

Am I worried for nothing?

If I had to guess, I'd say she didn't hit the port the first time and she put that 1.1 into your skin tissue. You'll know better when you go back the second time and see what she can pull out. -
Well you are right on the edge of a qualifying BMI. If you weight 230, you are okay. If you weigh 220, you may be a bit under. You might want to weigh yourself and then make sure you meet a minimum BMI of 40 at your initial consult. If they put your height down as 5'2", that will help too. I've heard BCBS is pretty straightforward if you want a band or bypass. So that's good.

Not sad, but from about week 7 to week 12, I was pretty pissy. That was when I was cleared to eat normal food, yet couldn't eat very much at all. It made me mad! :tt2: But at around 12 weeks, I opened up to the point where I could eat enough to feel mentally satisfied as well as physically. It took a lot less food than pre-op too. And now I can eat even more. I suspect over the next 7 months, I'll be able to eat even more and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm not sure if she ever will be able to eat a WHOLE sandwich. It is going to depend on a lot of factors. But I believe some day I will be able to eat half a sandwich. And maybe even a bit of fruit or salad with it. That's what my roommate who was a size 2 and 1 inch taller than me used to eat on a regular basis. So that seems normal to me as what a really short person with a tiny frame should be eating. I have another friend who is an amateur athlete. He works out 10-20 hours a day in his sport at a high level. He's also 5'11". But if he eats over 1500 calories a day, he gains weight. I think about these two when I try to re-calibrate my sense of normal eating. I think our portion size and our ideas of what is a reasonable quantity of food is just so far off from what it should be given our largely sedentary lifestyles. Our food labels are based on 2000 calories a day. For most of us, that's way too many calories, yet we are told that is "average". Which makes it seem normal. Well maybe the DS is the answer then. It has the best stats. See how I got back on topic, like that. It's not that hard. More people end up 10 lb. higher than they want to be than end up too small and struggling to keep weight on. With all the surgeries except the band, you go from being really tight to looser so, over time, you are just naturally eating more than at first and that helps to slow the weight loss. So does losing weight because now it takes less calories to run your body. For some, that's enough. We start out at 400-600 calories a day on liquids and end up around 1000-1200 just by the sleeve or pouch opening up and that's all a lot of the formerly MO need per day so the weight loss stops. If someone needs more calories, they can replace their fat free yogurt snack with regular yogurt. They can cook with butter instead of PAM. Put some avocado on their scrambled eggs instead of salsa. Maybe have a high calorie treat once in a while. If they need even more, they can add in another snack or two. (Most of us are told to eat 3 meals or 3 meals and a snack so there is room to eat 1-3 more times a day.) And, if all that doesn't work, instead of drinking Water in between meals, you can add in a Protein shake here and there like some of my triathlon friends do. There are people with sleeves -- mostly really athletic guys -- who consume 2000 calories a day. They do have to work a bit harder to do that -- pay more attention to their eating. But it's entirely possible. If I keep up the triathlons, I can see myself needing about 1500 calories a day. It's more likely that I'll slow down the training in the off season and will only need about 1200. Which I could do now without even breaking a sweat and with still having to watch what I eat and not be able to eat a lot of junk. So I'm not *too* worried. -
Oh me, too! I thought I was the only one! But I don't like cake.... pie OTOH....

How about Egg Bites? You don't have to put cheese in them though most of my recipes call for it. Search my blog and also theworldaccordingtoeggface

That I would love to see. I would prefer Bob too. The thing is, back in August I was going to the gym 1-2x a week for 30 min. of stationary bike. Fast forward 6 months and I'm doing about 3x that much and in the best shape of my life. Did that happen because some harpy pushed me past my breaking point and screamed at me if I protested? No. It happened because I started from the point I was at and *gradually* built up as I got stronger. No yelling was necessary, either. This is part of why I hate the show. They are not showing good ways to lose weight in a healthy sustainable way. It's all about dramatic short-term changes.

Um, do you really want HIM to eat more meat? :tt2:

I used to love Anne Hathaway but I think she's too thin now. I completely disagree about Slumdog Millionaire! First, it made me want to go to India. Yes there is poverty there and I'm sure I'd be uncomfortable much of the time, but it's so alive at the same time. Second, I think they did a good job of keeping you involved in the story even though it was obvious there was going to be a happy ending. (And I knew the last question was going to be about the 3 muskateers the second they showed them not reading the book at school.) The twists along the way are what made the movie, not the overall plot. I would say SM was more than the sum of its parts.

He got his bike back... and mine is too small! I didn't go to swimming today because it's my support group night. So I road the stationary bike. I think I went 13.5 miles in 45 min. I did the Random Hill program.

I think you should get tested for sleep apnea. 50% of MO people have it so you might too.

How do you know RnY would? There is a leap of faith at some point. The studies I found said no. But today at support group my surgeon said yes. I don't know... but I do know that all the surgeries supply hunger control, but that can be done without removing ghrelin. They all have restriction I don't think it works that way. What's important is what your food issues are, not your genes. For example, my neighbor had bypass because he's dead-set against the band. Why? He knows 3 people who had it and it "didn't work". OTOH, my SIL was dead-set against bypass and wanted a band. Why? Because her sisters had bypass and didn't lose all their weight and then gained what they lost back and her daughter had a band and lost all her weight. IMO both of them made their decisions for the wrong reasons. You have to pick the surgery that is right for you, not the one that someone you know had and it worked for them. The difference between hunger and appetite. It's partially how we talk about it. We call it the hunger hormone, but it's really the appetite hormone. Appetite means thinking you are STARVING when you don't need food at all. I was hungry 1/2 hour after eating even though intellectually, I knew I couldn't really need more food. Oh and all the surgeries work better for the low BMIers. Well that's good! I don't know but I do know that the excess ghrelin serves the purpose of keeping us obese. It seems to be why we have it. Our ghrelin levels rise when we diet too. Our bodies react to dieting by trying to put the weight back on in case it happens again. Ghrelin helps that by telling us we are hungry as loudly and as often as is necessary to pack the pounds back on. I think so. Not having ghrelin was like flipping a switch for me. Not only do I not get hungry in between meals, I like healthy food better than artificial, processed food and I love to exercise. Just from having a bit of my stomach cut off. -
 I think they don't show a lot of the food stuff because it's boring tv.

Three weeks post-op
MacMadame replied to FatLess in Seattle's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Welcome to LapBandTalk! Yes, as you get more restriction, you'll get more hunger control. It might take longer than the first fill though. It seems to be very variable. -
Welcome to LapBandTalk! When you say fasting... do you have to do a liquid diet?
