Why no water with meals?
MacMadame replied to Finally!'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also, at least in the early days: #3. It hurts. -
Well, shoot, today my leg is all stiff. I don't get this. It's just a bruise.

My work blocks the Spanx site. But not sites that sell Spanx. Moron blocking software.

It's when your body produces too much saliva in a vain attempt to get the too much food you ate to digest faster. The saliva tends to foam up. There isn't room for it in the sleeve either so it just makes everything worse. Some people call it the slimies instead. In Brazil, they call it "alien spit." :mad0:

That's funny. Don't be J though. I had to get a new one because some skank stole my old one. So I had to pay $200 about a year before I was ready to. I'd much rather have my own phone back and then use that money for something else.

Tried to do a long run yesterday to make up for doing nothing on Sunday. My knee that I scraped on the bike hurt and then they closed the gym and made me go home. Blah.

I got a new iPhone! I got a hot pink case for it too. Heh.

All the surgeries give you a reduction in hunger due to restriction. So you do get hunger control and that's why they work. (WLS works 75-90% of the time compared to dieting which works about 1-5% of the time.) With RnY, I've been told there is a ghrelin reduction by "experts" but I've found two studies that say there isn't any significant reduction. So I think it depends... But my surgeon, who is a big proponent of the sleeve, will tell you that he sees the hunger reduction of RnY falling off over time and that it's not as complete as with the sleeve. For me, I knew my main problem was a raging appetite due to having too much ghrelin so I wanted a surgery that addressed that directly and not indirectly.

I started on regular food at 7 weeks out. My surgeon had me wait longer than normal because of some things going on with me. (Hiatal hernia repair slowed down my recovery a bit.) I thought eating regular food was going to be great but that was the beginning of my pissy period. I was eating "regular" food but the amounts were TINY. It was really frustrating. Also, I went to Las Vegas the day after I started regular food and spent the weekend with a bunch of RnYers who were all around a year or longer and they all could eat SO MUCH food compared to me. So that just made it worse. Oh and I also had some episodes of the foamies because I was eating too fast and, occasionally, too much. But at about 12 weeks, I could eat more and that was good and I got over my pissiness. I think the problem is that I thought regular food == regular life, but, in the beginning, you just don't have a regular life when it comes to food. That takes time and healing. Now, you may not have my exact experience, but just be prepared for it not to be the most wonderful thing ever.... that comes later.

Here's a study showing that diabetes resolution is as good with the sleeve as with RnY: SpringerLink - Journal Article Also, here are my surgeon's stats for the sleeve: BMI 35 - 45 : 82.2% BMI 45 - 55 : 73.4% BMI 55+ : 52.1% Their RnY stats are: BMI <55 : 70-80% BMI 55+ : 50-60% So you can see that the initial weight loss is very comparable. But you can't just look at that. You have to look at regain too. My surgeon says about 10% of his sleeve patients with a starting BMI of 50 or less regain an average of 10 lb. (Same with DS.) With starting BMI's above 50, it's 15% who experience regain. But about 25% of RnYers regain an average of 25 lb. The reasons are many: -The pouch in RnY is made from the stretchy part of the stomach and so by the end of 1 year, bypass patients can eat more than sleevesters on average. -The stoma also stretches out over time a little and that means food sits in your pouch for a shorter time leading to less feelings of fullness -Somewhere in the 12 to 18 month timeframe, your body learns how to absorb the calories that it used to not absorb. So you can eat the same amount of food as the year before, but your body gets more calories. (Yet, you malabsorp the micronutrients forever.) Also, according to this study: Weight loss, appetite suppression, and changes in ...[Ann Surg. 2008] - PubMed Result RnYers do not get a significant reduction in ghrelin, the hormone that controls your appetite. This is a killer for some of us and it's why some bypassers end up regaining all their weight back - their brains tell them they are hungry all the time, just like they did pre-op. For me, I wanted the surgery with the absolute best hunger control. That means VSG or DS. Those are the only two where the part of the stomach that produces ghrelin is removed.

Things may taste weird for a while. Your sense of smell may be heightened too. The combination of being in ketosis and having a stronger sense of smell can make a lot food seem off or unappetizing. But this will pass. In the meantime, just keep changing things up and forcing yourself to eat.

I wasn't eligible to upgrade until May '10! They wanted $500 for the phone. I said No so they figured out how to get it via Mr. Mac's plan. So he upgraded but I got the phone.

Today I had some beef stew I had made a while back in the crockpot and frozen.

If your surgeon makes a small enough stomach, then your weight loss should be similar to RnY at 1 year out. My surgeon's practice showed a chart at the 2nd Sleeve Consensus Summit that shows this and they have other data that shows that from 1 year out, weight loss is pretty much the same. However, the sleeve surgery is not standardized at this time so you really have to go by your own surgeon's stats and success rate. If he's making the stomach bigger, or doesn't have the same angle of His, etc. then it changes the stomach emptying time and your restriction level and that can have an impact on your weight loss. I have some links here to help research the sleeve that you may find helpful.

Wow, I never heard of a campground with sprinklers like that. It would definitely be unexpected!

Going to Mexico on August 9th
MacMadame replied to AJW's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used WASa's "How to research a Mexican Doctor" as a starting point and modified to work for any doctor and for the sleeve. (She now has one on the sleeve you can use instead). I sent it to all the people covered by my insurance. Then, when I found out my insurance wouldn't pay for any WLS, I expanded to include any surgeon in my area who had a good reputation. -
hello! For those of you who had surgery in mexico how did you................
MacMadame replied to ryansgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I told everyone, but I waited until I was very close to surgery to do so. You have to do what makes you comfortable. -
I got a new iPhone! And a hot pink case for it.

Compulsive Worrier
MacMadame replied to Bornagainbabe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on prilosec and I started out taking it every other day to wean off and then every 3rd day. I'm not sure it really mattered though. I probably just should have stopped. I did experience heartburn my first week off it. But my surgeon told me to give it a month to stabilize and I found that the heartburn did go away, for the most part. Now I just take Pepcid AC once in a while if I feel a bit coming on. -
I usually take leftovers from my dinners. So it's mostly meat and veggies. If I do take a frozen dinner, I will just leave most of the starch part of it. I can't eat the whole thing anyway.

Haven't lost any more weight since the initial 1 week post-op
MacMadame replied to susimar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How much you are going to lose in absolute pounds or kilos is going to depend on how much you have to lose though. I only lost an average of 7 lb. a month after the first two months, but I got to my initial goal at 6.5 months. -
I've been singing this one all morning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzPxL_TZWcM It's very peppy. Went on a bike ride yesterday. Fell over on my bike when we decided to start back up a hill after a water break. Now my knee stings. :scared2:

It's in Oct. I did 3.66 for my tempo run and that was under 10 min. too. But not by such a large amount. I really want to do the 1/2 mary in under 2 hours so I need to keep working.
