  1. Holy cow! That's how they did your EGD? For mine, they gave me a twilight anesthetic (the Michael Jackson drug). You feel great for about 30 seconds, then fall asleep. Wake up feeling great and out of the hospital 30 min later. Sorry you had to do it that way. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Water/Protein is a full time job

@@kaitlynm When you mix the syntax up, does it end up all frothy and nasty (in my opinion!) like the other Protein options, or does it end up more like a flavored Water (similar to isopure)? Thanks.
  3. Oh, and he probably about 15-20 min from the hospital. The hospital is very nice. Large private rooms, very Bariatric friendly - large beds, large chairs. And the nursing staff is awesome and attentive. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. It's not terribly far from the airport. I'd guess about a 30 min ride. Yes, Jen is great. I actually was in the office today for my one week post-op. Dr. Weiner has been nothing but a pleasure to work with. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Nervous about surgery

Wow. Powerful @mlbdl. Best of luck to you, and keep us posted. I'm 8 days post op RNY, please let me know if you have any questions about the procedure or my experience with it. Given the diabetes, are you planning on an RNY? Or even a DS? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. Let us know who you choose. Interested to hear. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. Yes, my surgeon offers a self pay option for RNY that is between $19,000- $20,000. His name is Dr. Matthew Weiner in West Bloomfield, MI (Detroit Suburb) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Smoothies - off limits?

My doctor actually recommends them - green smoothies that is. He is very anti-processed foods, so he does not really like the Protein shakes. He asks his patients to move off of them as quickly as possible post-surgery and go to a green smoothie with whey Protein Powder within 4-5 days (I'm one week post-op and having a banana, strawberry, blueberry, spinach, whey protein one right now). Even the whey protein powder is not "real food", and wants us off that as well when we can consume enough food to get our protein a more natural way. His view on smoothies is that you still are getting the fiber from fruit (and he has no restrictions on fruit other than immediately post-op of course) so it slows the absorption of sugar and doesn't create a spike, unlike juicing which removes the fiber, which he is opposed to. I should say, my doctor is much different that almost all of those on here. He does not require the high levels of protein most others require. He looks for 50g a day for females and 60g a day for males. He believes in a "veggie first" approach as opposed to a "protein first" approach. He is also not "anti-carb", he is anti-refined carb and processed anything. So, as long as you are getting your carbs from fruit, Beans, lentils, etc. he is fine with it. He also does not promote fats at all other than through sources like nuts, avocados, etc. He allows a TBS of olive oil daily. This can be a sensitive topic though, I would ultimately recommend you go with whatever your doctor recommends.

    <48 hours till surgery!

I think you'll find that the liquid diet post-op is no problem. You aren't hungry at all, and you're bound to be a little sore. You may miss eating, generally speaking, but you shouldn't be miserable. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  10. I am 6 days post-RNY and I could probably start back tomorrow if needed. I'm going to work from home for a week or two mainly because I tire easily and it will be less stressful to reintroduce food. My doctor essentially told me to take as much time as possible to focus on healing and introducing food. However, he said 1-2 weeks is probably all that's required. 11. I will be having my RNY on Monday, March 21st. I'm ready. This is going to be a long week, I can tell. I'm already having trouble sleeping as I just keep thinking about the surgery and the post-surgery recovery process. I'm also not sure I'm going to have the most productive week at work! Thank god for March Madness this weekend. Otherwise I could lose my mind prior to Monday.

Not sure who I should tell!

Your company only needs to know the date of your medical procedure, what your restrictions are, and when you can return to work. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My surgery is one week from today

The gas-x strips are for the gas pains after surgery. Many people swear by them, but I didn't find them really effective. I found getting up and walking the best medicine for the gas pains. I did get them and take them - no harm in trying. They may help you. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Yes, I would get the Vitamins in advance. I would, however, call your doctor and see which ones they recommend. You will probably need to start taking them the morning after you return home from the hospital. Not when you want to be out shopping for vitamins. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Nervous about surgery

I am just 4 days post op and I have told very, very few people thus far. This is mainly because I'm a private person who doesn't chose to disclose much of my personal business to others. I have yet to decide how I will handle it down the road, I guess I'll go with whatever feels right at the time. That being said, you have NOTHING to be embarrassed about. This is not the "easy way out" this is the ONLY way out. There is over a 97% long term failure rate for morbidly obese patients who try this through just diet / exercise. We all know this, because we are all part of that 97%. Conversely, there is a 80%-90% success rate in keeping at least 50% of the excess weight off over 5 years with surgery. Would you be embarrassed if you had heart disease and needed surgery? How about kidney disease? Would you seek treatment for cancer? OF COURSE you would. WLS is the only known successful treatment of obesity. I struggled coming to grips with this too. I also felt like a failure. I have managed to be very successful in every other aspect of my life I put my mind to. I kept holding out that if I just tried harder, I could do this on my own. But I can't. None of us can. It's not realistically possible. Think of it this way. If this were your job, wouldn't you use every tool available to you to be successful? In fact, wouldn't you be negligent in NOT using the most effective tool to solve any problem? Why shouldn't that apply to your health? It's because of societies negative views of obesity, and the corresponding stereotypes. We're all lazy, stupid and pathetic. Except we're not. Don't buy into that hype. Take care of yourself. It is precisely these reasons that I may chose to be more open about this down the road. To help change some peoples stereotypes. And to hopefully allow other people with this same issue to free themselves from those societal shackles. You got this. Ignore the haters. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Water/Protein is a full time job

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I managed to get all required 60g of Protein in today! Took me about 11 hours. I'm also at about 45oz of Fluid, so I should be able to make my required 64oz today as well. A lot of work, but a little bit easier everyday. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My surgery is one week from today

Jus a quick update. Surgery was a success. Surgeon said it was straightforward, textbook surgery, no issues. Which is good, because the pain I experienced for the first 4-5 hours post opt was the worst I've had in my life. I mean, it was scary bad. They finally got a pain combo that worked for me, plus the passage of time, and I feel human again. Still taking the pain meds as I don't want to get "behind" the pain again, but my pain at this point is pretty low. Just ice chips for now, but that's fine with me. Just thirsty. Hope everyone else's went well today. And good luck over the next few days. I look forward to hearing from you all. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
