Need RNY but...
ridgerunner replied to ridgerunner's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi LisaMergs! You are well met! Thank you for your advice. It is very encouraging to hear about someone who has had this serious of a problem and is managing well without nsaids. You hit the nail on the head when you said you were dreading being without your advil more than your favorite foods. I have been worried that I will be thinner but in pain. My quality of life is too important. I'm too old to worry about vanity...give me health! -

VSGAnn2014, I guess you did not entirely read my post or my answers to you or Inner Surfer Girl. Where I have repeatedly said I would be consulting with my doctors? I did not ask you or anyone else to diagnose or treat me. I simply asked a simple little question about what OTHERS are doing about THEIR pain without the use of NSAIDS. People ask medical questions on here all the time. This is a forum for WLS not fashion and marriage. Believe me, I know you are not a doctor and I am intelligent enough to decide whether or not something you may be doing to relieve pain may not be right for me. I am sure that I am not alone in this ability. -

VSGAnn2014, I understand that I need to ultimately speak to my doctors. I said as much in my response to Inner Surfer Girl. But until I am able to do that what is the harm of me gleening information from those who have been there before me and may have helpful tips and suggestions that I could take to my doctors and inquire about? What is this forum for if we are never to ask questions we should be asking a doctor? In turn, does that also mean we should never heed anyones advice in this forum that is not a medical professional, no matter how sound? Does that mean that your advice is subjective and doesn't apply to me? Am I only to post my stats and weight loss photos and refrain from asking any questions? I apologize if I sound rude but I see people reaching out to others here all the time for advice and time and again all they get is "talk to your doctor" ... well duh, of course they will talk to their doctor but in the meantime they are just asking for an opinion or two from those going through what they are. Have you all gotten so far removed that you have forgotten what it's like to crave answers to all your questions? Did you never ask a question that you will be asking your doctor? Ever? -

This sounds like something you need to discuss with your surgeon and various physicians. Coming up with a pain management plan is something your healthcare team has the expertise to do.But of course...that goes without saying. But since I have this forum available to me I see no harm in asking others with experience what their solutions to this problem were. So far I have received several helpful comments. -

I am sailing in that same boat. Between my job not wanting me to be off so long, having to take out a bank loan AND refinance my house to pay for this surgery, and now my car's check engine light just came on! I feel like the weight loss gods are not on my side! -

I have heard that NSAIDS could possibly be an issue with the sleeve too. I know for sure it would be with bypass. I have been reading quite a few long term sleeve success stories here too. I would love to say I would be among them. But I also never thought I would be a 300+ woman either. This is so hard!!! -

Calorie tracking App?
ridgerunner replied to moppet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been using the free MFP app but have a problem with it. I am having to say I am 80 lbs lighter and 5 inches shorter than I actually am so it will calculate the amount of calories that I (and my NUT) want me to eat. Anyone else using the free app? Do I have to pay for the premium version to avoid this? -
I am pre-op gastric bypass. Like most of you here, since I came to the decision to have surgery I have been studying and reading everything I can to learn what to expect. I have taken steps to change how I eat and understand how food effects me. I have lost 35 lbs so far from healthy eating. One of the steps was to cut out sugar from my diet except for a rare treat I allow myself once a month or less. During my scheduled meet with my NUT she told me I need to start using protein shakes to replace a meal. I told her that I was kicking sugar and would rather get my extra protein through an unflavored whey that I could put in my water or food. She said no, no good. Drink the shakes. I am stumped as to why a sugary protein shake is so superior?? Could someone enlighten me?

Is there any reason not to start heavily dieting now?
ridgerunner replied to Tina4heath4ever's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
PixelToph, I have been experiencing the same! I too go longer between cheat days, and yes! It really doesn't taste as good, which causes me to go even longer because I can't decide what I want to cheat with since I don't want to waste it on blah food -
Is there any reason not to start heavily dieting now?
ridgerunner replied to Tina4heath4ever's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I made changes to my diet as soon asI knew in my heart that I was doing WLS. I cut out alcohol, coffee, soda, sweets, starches and pastas. I eat high protein, low carb and drink lots of water (basically it is all I drink) I downloaded the Fitpal app and log everything I eat. That has probably helped me more than anything else. Keeps me accountable. I do allow myself one night a month to eat out and have something on the naughty list. When I crave something I just tell myself I can have it in due time. I have been doing this since March and have lost 35 lbs so far. I will keep it up until my liquid diet phase before surgery. -
Why Protein Shakes?
ridgerunner replied to ridgerunner's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have heard good things about the unjury chicken soup and have actually been kinda excited to try it lol. I have not heard of the protidiet soups. I will check that out. I would be thrilled to use these instead of the shakes! Thanks for the ideas! Did you use them pre-op at all? -
Why Protein Shakes?
ridgerunner replied to ridgerunner's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It felt like she was just reciting a monologue to me. Like she wasn't really listening to what I was saying. I have felt like these shakes are just wrong right now. I understand that I will have to rely on them when I get closer to the date (and after) but I feel like now is the wrong time. Thank you for your support. -

I was already getting the amount of calories she reccomended. I saw her in March and am not due for surgery until July. I am baffled. -
Why Protein Shakes?
ridgerunner replied to ridgerunner's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have found no sugar shakes or verylow sugar sahkes, and even a protein drink called lift by Atkins. It has helped me a lot as I can not have any food right now. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App I will look into those no sugar shakes. Are they not sweet at all? What is the flavor? -
Why Protein Shakes?
ridgerunner replied to ridgerunner's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like your NUT wants you to use a protein shake that is a meal replacement (usually has all the nutrition you would need for a meal) rather than a protein supplement that doesn't have all the required nutrition. That is my best guess. Did you ask her why? It is perfectly acceptable to keep asking questions if you don't understand something. I thought of the meal replacement idea but if I am taking in the same amount of calories without the shake then what's the difference? I am also taking Vitamins. I was getting 100 grams of protein everyday. Why would she think it was worth jeapordizing my hard work? I have been steadily losing weight. Why mess with the formula? -
Why Protein Shakes?
ridgerunner replied to ridgerunner's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am using the Premiere but to me, since I have cut out sugar it tastes extremely sweet. And as we all know... the more you have, the more you want. I worked hard to get the sweet monkey off my back and these are just making it harder. I asked a couple times why unflavored whey wasn't good enough. She just kept repeating to use the shakes so I gave up -

Beck90, I think you are barking up the wrong tree here. I would google the answer if I were you. Good Luck in your search. Knowledge is power. -
