    The difference a year makes...

Funny you say that because last Christmas was my breaking point and I went to my first bariatric seminar 2 weeks later. I was sweating, out of breath trying to cook. I over-ate and was miserable. I would sit on the couch and I'd have to rock back and forth to get back up. It was an aweful night and I knew I needed to do something. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

    Eat whatever you want?

I have a feeling your friend is minimizing the work she really puts into her weight management, I've caught myself doing the same thing with friends and family that are considering surgery. I've been very open about my surgery so people ask me a lot of questions, usually related to how "drastic" my life had to change. When I get these questions I find myself minimizing the changes, because for me they are the new normal and don't seem as drastic anymore. So I say things like "I can eat anything" but what I mean is I can eat a BITE of anything, but I choose not to because weight loss, health and maintenance are my priority. I CAN eat whatever I want, but I don't. With that said I'm also part of the "eat whatever you want" crew (once in maintenence of course), but in moderation. It seems like you were out for a special occasion so I'm sure what she ate and drank, both in substance and quantity, we're not the norm for her. I think the best part of your story is that it shows this surgery is not some sort of magic cure all. Once healed, you have to manage your choices and find a balance between diet and normalcy. The restriction does lessen over time, the trick is how we manage it. If she can have a few drinks and a good steak every now and then and still maintain then she is doing something right, she has found the balance. 4. Could also be an internal hernia, I had bad pain, contracting, 5 months out and that is what my surgeon suspects is the cause. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

    Help! Gaining weight!

It's Fluid retention from the IVs coupled with swelling, totally normal. It will go away in a few days. You cannot gain fat on a clear liquid diet. Stay off the scale until you go to the Dr. It will start coming off very fast very soon! Best of luck to you! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App
  6. I have 4lbs to go to goal. The last 15 for me have been very slow. I've gone from losing a steady 10-12 lbs per month to 3-4, that's okay though. Just keep following the plan and they will come off, just not as fast as the initial phase. Best of luck to you! You can do it! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

    Say what?!

My surgeon didn't set a goal weight but at my last appointment I brought it up. I mentioned that my goal was 125 (I'm also 5'2). He said that based on where I currently was, I may not be happy at that weight and that the healthiest folks have a bmi of 25-27 long-term (he's not a fan of the bmi chart and says it's outdated). Anyway, as I've continued to lose weight I've readjusted my goal to 136.4. That is the very high-end of the normal weight for our height. Once I get there, I'll decide if I want to go lower. I'm currently 140, a size 6, and a small top. I never realized I was "small-framed" and always thought I was big boned. Now that I'm close to goal I'm realizing that 125 may be too small for me. The point, set a goal that you are comfortable with and work to achieve it, but allow yourself to be flexible along the way. As your body changes, allow yourself to let go of the number and truly figure out what is best for your body and health. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App
  9. Find another surgeon. I have Barrett's and they had no problem doing bypass. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App
  10. I found out I had Barrett's after my pre-op endoscopy. After consulting with my surgeon I opted to have the RNY bypass. With an increased risk of esophageal cancer, I wanted to leave my stomach intact inside my body. God forbid something happens in the future, my old stomach is still there which is what they use to build you a new esophagus. I had my RNY on 3/14/16 and have been very successful. No more GERD, 121lbs lost and 4lbs to goal! It's scary to get a diagnosis but I was so thankful for the preop process to truly get a full medical workup and find out any issues I had. 12. I initially wanted the sleeve thinking bypass was too drastic, but because of GERD I wasn't left with too many options so bypass it was. I had surgery exactly 9 months ago, HW 261, SW 242, and currently 142. No regrets here at all. The only difference is can see from sleeve is that I really have to watch my sugar intake, too much (like a bowl of ice cream) and I'll get sick. I can still eat anything however. I'm an impatient person and the results were quick, so I'm glad I was able to have the bypass. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

    Bypass

Had my bypass 3/14/16. Nausea went away 1 week or so after surgery. I've never vomited. Constipation is/was a big issue but keeping hydrated and adding Fiber have helped tremendously. Overall, don't feel much different than before surgery, there's just a lot less of me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

    Pre Op Too Easy

I did not require a pre op diet, just Clear liquids the day before. I had RNY, so different surgery but even more invasive and everything went off without a hitch! Every surgeon is different but if you're not comfortable I would call them and ask them to explain the reasoning behind their instructions. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

    Dumping

Dumping is no fun! Keep in mind that sugar free doesn't necessarily mean carb free. I'm assuming you got the drink from a machine where there was no nutrition label available. This early on try to stick to things that have a nutrition label so that you can monitor the carbs. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

  18. I had a follow up appointment with my surgeon this week, 7 months post-op. He told me I'm doing fantastic, should lose about 15 more lbs, and then, looking me dead in the eye and stated, "damn, I did a good job!" He did, and I did too! I'm in shock daily at how for I've come this year. My head hasn't caught up yet though, and most days I still feel fat, despite what i see in the mirror. I'm OK with that though, because gives me the motivation to keep making good choices and keeps me from being complacent. My husband and I went out last night to Celebrate our anniversary and we took a picture together (the one on the right, cropped him out for privacy). I just keep staring at it, I can't believe it's me, what I have dreamed of accomplishing all of my life. Anyway, no real point to this post, other than I feel good, I feel happy, and I just wanted to share that damn, we're all doing a good job! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

Damn, I did a good job!

My hair is curly so I just blow it out to make it look like it has more body. Also take the Biotin and use nioxin shampoo and conditioner, I swear that is helping the regrowth. Oh, also a shorter cut with layers really helped! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App

Damn, I did a good job!

I've lost about 50% of my hair. It's coming back now, tons of regrowth. I was really upset when it was coming out, but realized there is nothing I can do about it so I just accepted it. Worst months were 2-5 after surgery. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App
