    Hypothyroidism & Diabetes

I was diagnosed November 2014. I am technically still diabetic because my last A1c was 6.0 - but with great blood sugar and the weight loss, I am sure I will be able to drop that diagnosis very soon. I am no longer on any medications for diabetes.

How can you tell you lost weight?

    this is fabulous!

    Is this a usual thing...

I had a year long wait before my surgery due to some unexplained bloodwork problems. So, I lost about 30 pounds. and I have lost 20 since surgery. the thing is, if I hadn't had surgery I would have gained back what I lost sooner or later. if your BMI is lower you will loose pounds slower - but someone explained on another thread that it is better to go by percentage of weight lost. I need from surgery to loose just over 100 pounds to loose all excess weight, which means after one month I've lost 20% - not too shabby! and the hope that when I finally get there I will be able to keep it off. I was pretty discouraged during week 2, but then I found my balance. Now I am finding my way again.

to snack, or not to snack?

For me it has helped to use smaller plates, bowls, etc to serve myself in. helps my brain to feel I am having a full amount.
  6. I am very thankful that my husband didn't give up on me. We've been married almost 20 years, and I have been obese for all of it. Every time I tried to do better he was patient with me and encouraging. Willing to spend money on whatever equipment I wanted to try (treadmill - pilates machine - we even have a puppy dog because I thought it would encourage me to walk and be more active) and watched me eating myself to death a lot of the time when the weight was going back on. He was supportive then, and supportive now. I think all of us have to take a moment and remember we were the obese spouse, and how would we want to be treated?
  7. I really don't understand everyone who says consider if the relationship is working for you - um hello - they are MARRIED. for better or worse, in sickness and health? yes. this is WORSE, and yes this is sickness but a promise is a promise. to the OP, I am so sorry you are dealing with this. my husband has Asperger's Syndrome. I spent years while he sorted things out to learn how to find a place to be productive in society. it took us a LONG time to learn how to be married without stepping all over each other. it was worth all the junk we went through and all the trouble it took. I had to learn how to support him - and how to help him - without ENABLING unhelpful behaviors, but at the end of the day that was all I could be responsible for. I am really glad I stuck with it - it was hard some times. So, I would encourage you to get support and help. Your life changes have changed the balances in your relationship and you will need help to sort out how you can help and support him without enabling him. I hope you two can find a way to be intimate until he is healthy enough to resume normal activities.

People in my office trying to get me sick

I don't know about any research but for me personally I have found that taking cod liver oil (capsule) and Vitamin C from rose hips, when my office mates get sick, if they are sick a week - IF I get it I am only sick a day or day and a half. my symptoms are less during that time.

    Stalled at 5 weeks?

someone here (sorry I don't remember who) posted on another similar thread that if you know your calories are right (for me 800-1000 per day) and you are getting fluids and Proteins to not worry. the scale WILL move. even if it goes up a bit don't panic when you know you have not consumed enough calories to gain weight. That alone has helped me more than anything else. so when the scale stops I do a rough average of my calories, Protein and fluids and move on. I do weigh daily, but I only record it as official once a week.

    Water - it really works

lemon Water is very good for you. I keep a glass on my nightstand and drink it at room temperature every morning. whenever any of us feels a cold coming down it's hot water with lemon. amazing stuff.

    Your support person

my husband took two days off work - surgery day and the next day, then was his weekend. He had FMLA in place in case I needed him more, but I didn't. He was prepared to stay in the hospital if needed, but I didn't need him. :-) I pray your recovery goes as well as mine has. I was up walking when I got in my room, 10 minutes every hour I was awake, helps so much with the gas.

    2nd Surgery

I think they usually want to wait a few months - but it probably depends on what is being done. I had a hysterectomy last August, and VSG in February. Another doctor had wanted to do a lymph node biopsy in September but we waited because it was too soon after the first surgery, and then later we didn't need to yet, so that was a good thing in the end, stressful at the time.

    Is it normal..

when they asked me this I said 160 - because honestly I could not even imagine getting lower than that. to get below 200 will be - well, I will be in tears, I know. When I married my hubs 19 years ago I was 180. To be a perfectly normal weight - to loose all my pregnancy weight before the oldest turns 30 in two years I would need to get to 130. Honestly, anything less than 160 I will consider a success. 130 would blow me away. but it does seem possible now. Whatever goal you set, it can be adjusted as you go. :-)

    Down 70Ibs

its a very striking change, and to people looking at you it may seem too abrupt because we typically associate rapid weight loss with illness, serious illness. Just keep following your plan! you look great and I am sure you feel fabulous. the only person I would listen to is if your doctor thought it was too fast for some medical reason. :-)

    Buying Bras Post Surgery

TJ Maxx has VERY good bras for less than 10$ a pop. Soma will measure you to get your bra size, so will Nordies. :-) I am fitting the bras I bought but were too small, will need new ones soon.

More critical of facial features after WLS?

also to add to what the others have said - Never ever. NEVER let yourself speak badly to yourself in a way that you would never speak to a friend. Kindness starts with yourself. I've never seen a single person that I would not find beautiful. Seriously - we are all so different - but life is magic! and people of all ages are unfathomable miracles. And you are darned cute. It's hard to go through these changes and make adjustments. The last time I was a "normal" weight was more than 20 years ago. What will I look like when I get there? not the same as I did 20 years ago, I can count on that. But I hope the years, and the family, and the road I've traveled will make me more beautiful, even if I look a lot older.

What if I can't do it?

Hahaha! If only it was that easy to lose actual weight, I'd be 10K$ richer! Thanks for the encouragement. I'm looking forward to surgery! I'm just scared of failing because I've failed everytime before, no matter how genuinely motivated I was. All the positivity I'm reading on this forum is kind of helping overcome the self-doubt, though! We all failed every time we tried to loose weight before, or we wouldn't have had surgery. I am one month post surgery - and I still half expect to wake up and find that it was a mistake and the weight is back on - but I am just putting one foot in front of the other and pressing on with the plan, trusting it to work. So far, so good. Find other ways to pamper and comfort yourself. The joy of a slow walk in the evening - the pleasure of music you love - a nice warm epsom salts bath. there are so many ways to feed ourselves besides carbs. <3 You're worth it.
  20. could be acid - are you on medication for that?

to snack, or not to snack?

my team said 3 meals and 2 Snacks per day. Protein first. So far my weight loss is right on track, so it's a pretty good plan. I hope you have a team to help you formulate a plan specific to your needs.

    Going back to work

I took a week, and came back on 6 hour days for the rest of the first month, I have a desk job and no complications. I did fine. If I had it to do over again I would take off the full month I was allowed and just focus on getting the hang of things.
  24. typically scrambled eggs. with half a piece of oat toast.
  25. well. I find that I am putting up with people treating me badly a lot less. in fact I am having to make myself wait to respond lest I overdo it. Did I put up with more before this journey? are people trying to push me back in an unhealthy place because they are threatened by my weight loss? I don't know. Thankfully this for me, is a workplace issue and not my core relationships. I don't know yet if I have changed or if they have.
