7 weeks Post-op FULL OF REGRETS

Either you really are sick with a bug or such, or something has gone wrong. Either way, you'll get better results from talking to your surgeon instead of posting on a message board Hopefully your doctor is nearby rather than in Mexico. In your case, I wouldn't wait to get help. It could be serious. Do something now.

It's not "like that" for most people. I have felt great ever since my surgery. Maybe you are actually sick? Cold? Flu? Something temporary? Take it easy.

    Advice

I can tell you what not to buy! Do not buy too much of anything!! I wish I had only bought one can of Protein powder. I got two. Now 3 months later, the second one is still sitting in the cabinet. I am unlikely to ever use it. The second box of sugar free popsicles is still taking up space in the freezer. I have half a case of Isopure clear drinks that are taking up a giant chunk of space in the fridge. I will likely toss all of that stuff and it was expensive. So the best advice I can give you is to keep it minimal and not overbuy anything. You will be out and about in a matter of days (I was shopping at the mall two days after getting out of the hospital) and can get anything you may find you need then. I recently posted my 5 day post op activity. You can see it here: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/369522-what-to-expect-day-1-post-op/#entry4177151

    I'd rather not eat

@@bunnyh ok yeah, eating should definitely not be torture. Getting full fast is one thing, experiencing the kind of pain you describe is another story entirely. I'm not a fan of surgeries in Mexico given that you can't have followups or a bariatric team to see regularly. I realize it's the only option for some, but it's important to get into some kind of followup program or plan with a doc and nut in your area. My program keeps tabs on us for the first 5 years post surgery. Hopefully your doc will figure out what's going on pretty quickly! Good luck!!

What to expect day 1 post-op

Day 1 Surgery Day Woke up feeling sore but fine overall. Had very dry mouth and the swabs were quite helpful. Slept most of the day (hadn't slept the night before). Pain pump came in handy. Had my first "meal" late afternoon consisting of 1oz of Water to be consumed over a 1 hour period. 1 oz?! Made me laugh but I did as I was told. Later that evening I was given a clear liquid tray for dinner. 4 oz broth and a sugar free Jello to be consumed in whichever order I wanted, with a one hour wait period in between. The broth was too salty. The jello was some awesome berry flavor I've never seen in stores. I finished both. Played with the call nurse button, walked around the hospital floor periodically doing the macarena, watched My 600 lb Life. Slept. The only weird thing of note was that i never felt like i had to pee but I frequently asked for help to the bathroom anyway and peed plenty each time. Yay for IV fluids. Day 2 Was hoping to go home but my blood count was oddly low so they kept me around for a second night. Had my first shake, 8 oz Carnation Instant Breakfast. chocolate. I was told to consume the whole thing over a one hour period. That wasn't a problem. Began getting bored. Played on my tablet, watched more TV, texted people on my phone, slept more. That night they turned off the pain pump and switched me to oral meds. Back to sleep! Day 3 Woke up to the joyous news that my blood count was back to normal and I could go home that day. Notified my ride to come get me that afternoon. They gave me another shake which again I had to drink over a 1 hour period. Again, no problem. Got dressed (i wore pajama bottoms and a sweat shirt to the hospital and back) and physical therapy came in with a bag of neat post-surgery goodies like a sock taker-offer and a sock putter-onner.. a really long shoe horn.. a reacher (which I still use for grabbing stuff off high shelves - genius!) .. a cute pillow with diagrams of sleeve, bypass, and lapband on it.. a pill cutter.. and the breathy thinger they make you use while you're there and want you to keep using when you go home. Nurse wheeled me out, I got in the getaway car, and home I went!! (after a stop at Rite Aid to fill my script). Day 4 Weighed myself to find that I had GAINED 10 pounds in the hospital!! Nearly fainted. I mean I knew I would gain a little from the IV fluids but never expected 10 whole pounds!! Geez I had some serious peeing to do!!! Spent most of the day on the sofa watching movies. Popped pain pills. Got up to pee a lot. Drank a couple of shakes and as much water/crystal light as I could, plus my Vitamins and Calcium, and sf popsicles and jello. Day 5 I was bored of lying around. Made my aunt take me to the mall. Spent the afternoon trying on clothes and buying stuff that was way too small for me (Most of it fits now!) As you can probably tell, my recovery was pretty easy. I was able to wean off the pain meds fairly quickly. The lack of solid food got old fast however and I was hungry. Fully aware that I had just had major surgery I needed to heal from, I didn't cheat like so many seem to do around here (nutheads), but rather went completely by the book. By the end of the first week at home, I had dropped the 10lbs of bonus water weight plus another 10lbs. I was off and running. And couldn't wait for the end of week 2 so I could dive head first into a 4oz dish of cottage cheese. Best cottage cheese ever! Good Luck!! ps. I was absolutely terrified going into this surgery. Turned out I was terrified clearly for no reason. It really was a breeze. Don't sweat it!

    I'd rather not eat

@@bunnyh I was at the same presurgery weight as you. I was sleeved March 16, nearly a month before you. Today I weigh 176. The speed of your weight loss was shocking when I read it, but made a lot more sense when you said you are only getting 600 calories in. I disagree that 600 calories at this stage is ok. 600 calories is starvation. You are starving your body. This is not a healthy rate of weight loss for your size. And since you aren't getting your fluids either, you are not only at risk of malnutrition, but dehydration as well. I realize that rapid weight loss can make you giddy and suddenly food doesn't matter one bit while watching that scale fly downward. However, I have done starvation diets and know the consequences all too well. Your joy is going to be short lived if you don't start getting more calories in and slowing this down. For one thing, you won't be happy when your hair starts falling out in clumps, that is coming, I'd guarantee it. You are also destroying your metabolism. But more than that, at some point you will go from feeling fantastic to feeling lethargic and drained with 0 energy to the point of being unable to stand up for long. I know, I have been there. I was super sexy in my size 5 juniors mini skirt. But I couldn't get out of bed to show it off. When I did make it out, I only had the energy to sit. It was horrible. Furthermore, the second you do start eating again, you will start gaining rapidly. While lower numbers on the scale may seem like the most important thing in the world right now, it's not. This is about total health. If you are truly unable to get more calories and fluids in and get to a safer rate of weight loss, please talk to your doctor and nutritionist. This is not a race. Slow and steady is the way to win this game.

    Advice - wish I'd followed

Did you read my second post? I said that rapid weight loss was an effect, and not the cause. Even if you were losing slow, there was still a calorie deficiency or you wouldn't have lost at all. ---- Let me also elaborate that nutritional and calorie deficiencies is just one cause. The bottom line is telogen effluvium occurs when your body is stressed in some way. Period. This could be due to change in diet, trauma or injury, surgery, meds, or any number of other physical or mental stressors. This isn't secret info, google can be pretty useful. WLS patients are going through multiple stressors. Which I would assume is why it's such a common occurance 'round these parts. What isn't going to prevent it, is stuffing in Protein. I'm just tired of hearing "eat more protein" as a cure for the hair loss. It's a myth. Hair loss will happen to some, maybe most. It will run its course and for the majority, the hair will grow back fine. Right now I'm happy that it's not happening to me, however I'm not even 11 weeks out yet and am fully aware that could change.

    Food

Lifelong?? Sorry if I wasn't clear. That's what I lived on for the first 2 weeks post op!! (stage 3). I followed my diet guidelines to a tee and I am way beyond that now. I don't even bother with protein shakes at all now, unless I'm in a hurry and need to grab something to run out the door with. I eat eggs, fish, beef, chicken, pork, deli meats, cottage cheese, veggies and even a little fruit/berries. I get 64 oz fluids every day, give or take. My daily calories are in the 900-1200 range, usually closer to 1100-1200. I work out 3x/wk. I would never try to exist on 600 calories, that is basically starvation level and I would never be able to perform at the gym on such little intake. When I read posts where people are eating so little farther out from surgery, it makes me worried for them.

    Food

Either one is fine, use both. I believe the light and fit (it's Dannon) has less fat (which I really dont care about tbh) and 7g sugar is nothing to fret over when you are only getting about 500-600 calories a day. My Protein shakes were nearly 30 grams a pop, so 2 of those pretty much took care of requirements, plus 12g more for the yogurt. I have had no trouble meeting protein goals at any phase of the diet. I lost over 20% of my excess weight in the first month and my fasting blood sugar dropped from 150+ to 89. It's still 89. This surgery was the best idea ever.

What did I do to myself?

Hmm.. my first night was awesome. I got a lot of exercise pushing the pain med button and sleeping in between.
  11. Shaydi.Laine

    Food

Cream Soups, light & fit greek yogurt, and sugar free pudding got me through those first two weeks. 2 shakes a day, cream soup for dinner, yogurt or pudding for a snack. Fluids in between throughout the day. You'll make it. We all did!

    Advice - wish I'd followed

Addendum, Telogen effluvium is due to calorie deficiency and/or nutritional deficiencies. I just researched it. hair will stop falling out when you begin consuming enough calories to get your system out of "stress mode". So actually rapid weight loss and hair loss are both side effects of extreme dieting. Am suddenly glad my weightloss has slowed down... tho I hardly feel safe from this. I remember losing hair in clumps and thinking I would rather be fat with hair than skinny and bald. It all grew back tho.
  13. Shaydi.Laine

    Advice - wish I'd followed

I have to disagree with your surgeon on that one. I once lost weight very rapidly on Atkins alone and my hair started falling out around month 3. No surgery involved, just rapid weight loss. I'm inclined to bet the surgery itself has NOTHING to do with hairloss. What makes a lot more sense, to me at least, is that the rapid weight loss is shocking to the human system. The hair loss is a side effect of that. I could be wrong, but I speak from my own experience.
  14. Shaydi.Laine

    Am I eating too much?

I was able to do the same. I don't think 800-1000 is too many calories at all. It's quite healthy in fact. You are healing well Cheers!
  15. Shaydi.Laine

    Advice - wish I'd followed

The hair loss is due to rapid weight loss. Protein can't prevent it, slow weight loss can. But who wants to lose slowly? ☺ Patience is a virtue!

    Feeling Judged

I hear jealousy. And bitterness. Sounds to me like this woman is battling her own demons and taking it out on you. Ignore and avoid.
  17. Shaydi.Laine

    Am i in trouble?

Trouble? Yes. You are starving yourself. You should be able to easily reach 1000 calories by now, 800 at a minimum. If you really can't force more nutrition, then I strongly urge you to see a doctor. Unless you are extremely overweight, a pound a day is a dangerous rate of weightloss. Please seek medical help!
  18. Shaydi.Laine

    Should i exercise

You should be walking. There is no need to be going to the gym right away. I was cleared for other exercise after 7 weeks. Worry more about healing right now. The weight comes off easy at first.
  19. The BMI chart is bunk. High muscle mass throws that whole thing out the window. In fact my surgeon agreed and waved it away when I mentioned how absurd it was. Many body builders will in fact come in as obese on the BMI chart even with barely a stitch of fat on them. Use it as a guide if you like, but take it with a grain of salt. Especially if you lift weights *flex*

Net carbs vs actual carbs ....

I have always counted net carbs and it works a charm.

    Scars be gone

I am using ScarAway and seeing some improvements, particularly with the smoothness of the scars. I know the color will fade in time. I'm using the sheets, discs, and the roller massage silicone gel thingy. just kinda rotating the arsenal. The roller seems to really help with smoothing things out and it actually fades the scars instantly... for about a minute. One of my scars is/was indented and I was pretty upset about that and planning surgery to fix it, but since using these products it has really flattened out quite a bit! I'm 10 weeks post op and have been using ScarAway for about 3 weeks now. Wish I'd started even sooner. It is likely that the scars will never vanish completely. If you want to totally hide your scars from the world while wearing a bikini, just get a cute cover tattoo That's what I would do!

    I feel devastated..

That was my exact thought when I read the OP. "This little brat is begging for money!" Made my blood boil. She clearly can't handle the heat so she'd better stay out of the oven. She is nowhere near ready for surgery.
