I use Now Sports pea protein and also their Soy Protein. I switch off betwen them and do use equal to sweeten my shakes. I get the unflavored and add my own fruit, greens, chocolate, vanilla, etc. The pea protein has 24 grams of protein with zero sugar and 1g carb. The soy powder has 20g protein, zero sugar, and 1g carb. Both are in the $16 - $20 range with 23 - 27 servings. I've ordered Pegan protein bars online, but they are pricey, so I'm going to start making my own. There are several recipes online. Usually it's some variation of mixing a vegan protein powder, nut butter, cereal, and agave or maple syrup (I plan to use sugar-free syrup and sweetener to taste) and letting the bars firm up in the refrigerator. [emoji4] I'm a 6', 200-pound, 50-year-old male with RNY in March, 2017. Starting weight - 410 lbs; current weight - 200 lbs. -

Right on! I'm a 6', 200-pound vegan man who had RNY in March 2016 and weighed 410 lbs (my peak was 432 lbs) before starting my pre-op diet. I weighed 387 lbs the day of surgery. Now I take in around 130-150 grams of protein and roughly 2700-2900 calories per day, but I do use protein shakes before and after my weight training workouts to help with muscle growth and repair, which has nothing to do with my WLS because it's a common practice for bodybuilding. Yesterday I had kidney beans, meatless crumbles, granola bars, a couple of vegan protein shakes and a protein bar, vegan deli slices, a tofu scramble, mixed nuts, plus a ton of veggies and some fruit. It's too labor intensive to list every single item, but my macro breakdown was 33g carbs, 111g fat, and 143 g protein. I consumed 2793 calories yesterday. No, but it enhances the flavor. For pilaf-like texture, use a ratio of 2 cups of water for 1 cup of millet, and 3-to-1 for a porride consistency. Google "How to cook perfect millet every time" from The Kitchn. That's been my reference. Sent from my LGMS550 using BariatricPal mobile app

So How Many Of You Guys Want To Actually Get Down To A Normal BMI?

My current BMI is 27 and my body fat percentage is 25. I'm a 6', 49-year-old man who started the process at 410#, with RNY surgery in March 2016, and now weigh 207#. My original goal weight was 200#. This is where I was 15 years ago when I lifted weights and looked my best before becoming morbidly obese in recent years. However, now that I'm almost there, I don't look good naked, lol. My loose skin issues aren't too bad compared to others (I weight-trained as I lost), but it sags a bit in the abdomen, inner-thighs, butt, and under my chin. I've read that often what we perceive as loose skin is actually deflated fat underneath that clings to the skin, and the best way to get rid of it is to go for 10% body fat (for men, 20% for women), at which point you can determine whether contouring surgery is needed. I have a ways to go as I focus on body composition instead of weight. Hopefully, with my past weight training experience, I can build up enough muscle to skip skin removal. Fingers crossed. Sorry to revive an old thread, but I stopped using my CPAP five nights ago after my doctor's consent. Since then, I've been getting only about five hours sleep each night. What's odd is I don't feel tired during the day. My doc did a night oximetry and my numbers were great, although I only slept about five hours that night, too. I told him this and he said it might take several nights to get used to not wearing it. He said he'd be more concerned if I were waking up a lot six months out. I usually get seven hours sleep with the CPAP. Has anyone else had this problem? My rny was in March, 2016, and I now weigh 207#, down from 410# when I started the process. I've gone back and forth between lacto-ovo vegetarian and vegan since 2011. I lost some weight but remained big (my set point and metabolism were a mess). I had RNY on March 7, 2016 and I'm down to 235 lbs from 410 lbs before my two-week pre-op diet. Since surgery, I've been lacto-ovo. I'm male, 6', and consume 1300 - 1800 calories and 70 - 100 grams of Protein daily depending on exercise for the day (I workout 6x weekly alternating strength with cardio). For the first month after surgery I was doing good to get 800 calories and 60 grams of protein in a day. I find it to be easier to get protein with yogurt, cheese, skim milk and the occasional egg. I would like to move back toward veganism, though, but many meat analogues no longer agree with me. Meatless crumbles, TVP, meatless meatballs, and Tofurkey deli slices are fine, but commercial veggie burgers and other products give me trouble. I make yummy black bean burgers, lentil-barely loaves, and TVP & bean chili that I can digest fine. I don't care much for soy Protein shakes. I like Vega One, but it can get expensive. I buy the store brand whey protein at Natural Grocers for cheap, but I only drink the occasional shake these days. I do eat a salad almost every day and add cheese, sunflower seeds, and sometimes a diced poached egg. I didn't return to salads until about 10 weeks out and stick with leafy mixed greens or spinach. I think you'll likely need to use dairy for protein the first two months after surgery and experiment from there. We all have different experiences with which foods do or don't work. There was a guy in my WLS program who was vegan and used mostly soy shakes, tofu scrambles, and TVP, so it can be done if you can handle a lot of soy. Need Help With Working Out / Training - Clueless.

You could download the Gym Workout app by Fitness22. It lets you tap a muscle group on a model and a series of resistance exercises come up with videos that show correct form. Also, look for the people at the gym with well-defined physiques and observe what they do, then copy using much less weight. Here in Wichita, our YMCAs are top-notch and there are no contracts. You get several free sessions with a trainer who will help you design a program to match your goals and will coach you on form to get you started. There are also a series of free weight training classes. Shop around, but be careful of commercial fitness clubs with high-pressure sales people. You don't want to get locked into a contract with a gym that doesn't meet your needs. Ask for a free trial membership so you can try before you buy. It's important to start with very light weights and focus on the correct form and range of motion before adding more weight. I also would start with machines, which will minimize the risk for injury. You can incorporate free weights as you get stronger. Never feel intimidated. People will understand that you're new and will respect that you're making the effort to get healthy. I went to the gym daily for 20+ years before health issues put me on the path toward obesity. At 6' and 287 lbs, I'm five months post-RNY and down 120 lbs. I looked my best at a muscular 200 lbs and would like to get close to that. I started back to the gym several weeks ago and feel like my old self is coming back. I'm down over 100 lbs since rny on March 7. I've also begun to hit the gym (6', male, down to 306 lbs from 410 lbs and a peak of 432 lbs). I started lifting weights last week. I lifted on a 5-day split for 20 years, maintaining a solid 190-210 lbs on my frame before some health issues started the downward spiral. I'm doing a push/leg/pull split on M/W/F with cardio on T/Th/Sa and rest on Sunday to provide adequate recovery. I'm surprised at how easy it was to navigate my workout at my old gym! My calorie intake is now up to 1400 per day with 80-100 g of Protein. I'm vegetarian, so most comes from dairy, Beans, grains, and the rare egg. I drink a supplement on occasion. I'm able to eat salads again. Some store-bought veggie meat replacements still don't sit well, so I avoid those. I ate a bean tostada from a taco place yesterday and loved it! I'm almost two weeks post op for an rny gastric bypass. My taste buds are happiest with savory flavors. I only eat sweets on occasion. I'm sick of drinking sweet flavored shakes, so I'd love to find a flavorless Protein powder I can add to Soups and other foods as my eating evolves. It will get better, Colleen. I think all our experiences are unique. This is my experience. I came home feeling great, but the next day I had gas pains in my shoulder like a leg cramp that lasted too long. I had these four or five times the next couple of days. Also, I'm having trouble with my JP drain. In the hospital, it was so excessive we switched from a bulb to a bigger bag. I thought it would be removed Monday, but another doctor subbing for mine didn't like the coloring and ordered a CT scan. They said it showed some swollen glands with Fluid buildup behind them and I would need the bag until this Monday. There's very little draining now, and the bag smells like rotten eggs--it makes me gag! I'm so ready to get rid of it!!! Sent from my LG-H810 using the BariatricPal App -

Wow! It's interesting to hear all the different pre-surgery diets. My program requires two weeks on HMR shakes and up to two HMR microwavable meals per day. They supply the shakes, but meals are extra @ $3.50 each. I'm a savory eater, so I lasted two days on shakes alone. I bought a few meals and have also eaten fat-free refried Beans and poached eggs in place of the meals. I'm to keep calories under 1300, and I do. March 7 in Wichita, Kansas. I begin a two-week diet on Monday. I'm male, 6', 405 lbs. I used to be a super-fit gym rat at a muscular 210 lbs (15 years ago) and hope to get back to that level. I later put on a few pounds and had undiagnosed sleep apnea and low testosterone that zapped my energy and metabolism, which accelerated my weight gain. This is my first post, btw.
