Why does salad cause people to get sick? Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App Salad/ aka raw veggies, are hard to digest... they are harder on your digestive system than softer, cooked foods. -
What to bring to hospital?

Yup. Chapstick for sure... electronic chargers, and maybe an extension cord for that... I wore the same clothes into the hospital, home. The hospital gave me a binder with all of my information, so I didn't have to write anything down. toothbrush/toothpaste, brush, and I brought my pillow because I'm a pillow snob, but also, I used that pillow on the way home in between me and the seat belt... that was also a great thing to have! -

I had to have a cpap machine too... I named him Horton (From Dr. Seuss's book, Horton Hears a Who! ha) Do you have any support groups through your doctor's office that you can go to that are local? They help a lot for you to see that you're not the only person scared and worried about this. I also found these boards to be great in helping me maneuver through some of my fears and concerns. Do you have someone that is going to be there for you after surgery? Siblings or friends that know about your surgery? This is a tough thing to go through, but so worth it if you can hang in there and get through it!

@@kerber I believe the poster said she's eating yogurt and applesauce... that's pureed if I ever knew it, isn't it? @@bypassthatbunni, talk to your doctor's office and let them know the problems you are having. Each doctor, and each program has different expectations. I am 4 weeks out today, and am supposed to be able to eat soft foods now, but I already know that may not work for me, as I've been sick several times from some of the things I've eaten... my little pouch is a picky little sucker! -
I too had my surgery on 5/16... I started out at 260 Surgery day 251 Today, 232 That's 19 pounds in 4 weeks or 4.75 pounds a week. I think the heavier you are the faster you lose... however, if I continue to lose 19 pounds every four weeks, well heck, I'll be at goal in 4.5 months! (and I know this is unlikely)... Don't compare yourself to others. Break it down and look at it... think of other times you have tried to lose. Did you ever lose that quickly? I know it's hard. I frown when I don't see the numbers change on the scale. I'm not quite positive I've hit a stall yet, but I've slowed to a crawl at the moment. But I know if I keep on keeping on, it'll change.

I changed toothpastes... Biotene. It's made a huge difference... even my spouse noticed how bad my breath (and the tastes in my mouth) were... now I'm apparently good enough to kiss again -

Protein shakes are hard for me too... I'm 4 weeks out. I make myself drink one in the morning... then I may or may not have more. I did buy the Isopure Protein drinks, and I'll drink those during the day if I need more protein (they are not milky, more like a gatorade). I'm trying to get more protein from food, but my stomach is still pretty sensitive, and I am limited on that. Most days I can hit the 60g of protein though. If i don't, I make myself have another protein shake, but I really dislike them right now. -
Premier Protein shakes, cut out ALL crap carbs... no crackers, chips, breads (even whole grain), tortillas (even low carb ones, read the package, they're not that low) anything with flour in it... ALL sugar. Period. No alcohol, no ice cream, no sugary drinks. Limit sugar alcohols - think sugar free candy Stock up on whole foods... meat/cheese/ LOW starch veggies (no carrots, no potatoes). Limit fresh fruit to one serving a day. Only shop the perimeter of the store (meat department, produce, dairy case). Get Oikos Triple zero greek yogurts... no carbs, no sugar, no fat... 15 G of protein. Read the original Atkins book (circa 1970's), and do the two week induction. It'll lower that A1C. And read labels... if it's packaged, they can sneak stuff in there...

Go get some wonton or hot and sour Soup from your local chinese restaurant, strain out the goodies and drink the broth... it has more flavor than plain broth and it saved me! Protein shakes Water with sugar free flavoring sugar free popsicles I've not heard about the red or blue dyes.. I did have that restriction with my colonoscopy, but not with my RNY surgery. -
Hi everyone! I'm doing pretty well too! I had my surgery on 5/16, my doctor cleared me for pureed/soft foods at 10 days out, but what I've learned the hard way is I'm not ready for all soft foods... particularly turkey meatloaf, mushrooms, and roasted cauliflower. I've had 3 instances that stuff has gotten stuck... 2 of them resulting in throwing it up (but not for a few hours of pain and discomfort). I think I've learned that my little pouch just isn't ready for that stuff yet! I don't know that I've hit the stall yet, but we'll see... I was 233.5 one day, then 234 the next, then 233.5 the day after, and then today 233... I had a horrible time with pooping, and last night finally did, so maybe that helped I found myself waking up on my left side the past couple of mornings... Yay! That's my favorite side to sleep on, but I just hadn't been comfortable enough to do it yet. I have been able to sleep on my right side for about a week now, so that's good progress. Side pain has really diminished, and sometimes I can't feel it at all... other times I can. I'm sure soon it'll be gone for good! Glad to see that everyone seems to be doing well

Question about liquid diet an return to work

Well I only had to do liquids for 3 days prior to surgery. I did have a lowcarb diet I had to do for 7 days prior to that though. What got me through it was a lot of whining to the dogs, and the realization that I only had to do it for X amount of time, and any weight I lost during that time was going to stay off, as opposed to other times that I tried to starve myself and nothing happened with the scale I have a desk job with a bit of flexibility. I took 1 week + 1day off (monday through the following Monday, returning on Tuesday). The remainder of the week that I came back, I worked 5-6 hours instead of 9. I think time off really depends on what you do though -
When to start exercising?

I'm also 3 weeks post-op (5/16). While I'm not cleared for lifting, I know that walking is just fine. That's probably a great type of exercise to start with. Don't dwell over that 3lb weight gain just yet. And remember that losing weight, 80% is diet, 20% exercise. There are some that get to goal with very little exercise. And I know telling you now to dwell on that 3 lbs is crazy to actually do! Also, remember that at 3 weeks, it's the time when most have their first stall... the body is catching up with all of the loss. Could that time of the month be playing into the weight gain? Have you been drinking enough Water? How long has the 3 lbs been around? -
The pylori test was so interesting to me... you blow into a little bag much like a capri sun. Then they give you this shot of really intense lemonade like stuff, and you wait like 15 minutes... then you blow into another capri sun bag... they send off your 'breath' to test to see if you have the active bacteria in your gut. If you do, they apparently give you some kind of antibiotic to kill it. I was clear and didn't need anything.

Nervous/anxious preop scope test/ submitted to insurance

I didn't have the scope, but I had a colonoscopy. I would imagine the anesthesia they use is similar. It's one of the really light ones that just puts you 'out' for a short period of time. If it is, I woke up pretty quickly afterwards, and was fine. I did take a nap when we got home though. It's amazing what they can do with anesthesia these days! -
My doctor has us wait 3 months. I too am an avid wine drinker, the drier the better... I love wine tasting parties and the such. I am a little over 3 weeks out and of course, no cravings for any now. I will seriously curb any drinking until I get to goal and figure out maintenance... Although I do anticipate having some in between.

@@jennmonterrozo Yes, I've read a lot about NSAIDS... Sorry, I thought you were only referring to foods. Apparently the NSAIDS can really affect our pouches because of ulcers. I haven't specifically asked my Dr though. -

Well I don't know about the celery... and I'm a newbie to all of this... But I don't think there are things you specifically cannot eat ever again. I think there are things that may not agree with your pouch, and you may dump, although the percentage of actual dumpers is pretty low. I think what I am going to try and concentrate on is learning to eat differently. For the first year, I want to avoid things like sugar, bread, flour, anything with high carbs. I want to concentrate on eating a healthy low carb diet. During the first year, I want to maximize the benefits of my new pouch and only make good choices. I know folks who are several years out, and honestly I've seen them eat/drink most anything (yes, even sodas)... -

@@jccanada did your doctor say it was OK to drink anything during a meal? Because it's been pounded into my brain "No drinking 30 minutes before, during and 30 minutes after a meal"... That might be attributing to your issue? I'm 3 weeks out and my doctor 'approved' soft foods that I can mash with a plastic fork. So I tried homemade turkey meatloaf... that did not end well. Then a few days later I tried a chicken salad where the chicken was shredded so finely it looked like tuna. That ended even worse (6 hours of the foamies, ending with throwing up). I've successfully eaten Salmon, cod, tuna, hummus, cottage cheese, and black bean Soup... I've decided these will be the things I eat for a while longer! LOL This is a frustrating part of this procedure, but I am keeping in mind that even if it takes 6 months... 6 months is a short period in the grand scheme of things... In the meantime, I will dream of things like chicken, turkey, and steak -
Ok, so I'm no expert on this. I've only had my surgery 3 weeks ago... But I do know a thing or two about dieting low card style, and carb addiction. You can all get back on track, but the single most thing you have to do is break that carb addiction! That means 10-14 days of true withdrawl for the sugar, chips, bread, crackers, potatoes, etc... On a regular diet you can use fat to help fill that void. I'm not sure how well that works after WLS... but I'm sure there are some Veterans around here that can answer to that. Get through that carb addiction and your cravings will subside... Good luck to you guys! I really want to see ya'll succeed because that's why we're all here!

Worried about losing weight too quickly

No matter what, if you lose a lot of weight, if you are pre-disposed to loose skin, you will have loose skin. Your genetics and age will play more into it than anything else. I'm 51. I already know I'm going to hate the loose skin. I just really hope it's not too horrible where everyone can see it (OK, so I'm vane)... I hope 'the girls' come through this with at least a little dignity! LOL I've decided once I get my bills paid off for this surgery (insurance covered it, but I had a 3K deductible), then I'll start a skin removal fund and see if I can save enough to get things fixed. -
@@lucja t You have to be patient, keep the lines of communication open with your doctor, and be committed. I am also 3 weeks out. While my recovery has been pretty normal, I have had a couple of bumps in the road. I am barely past all liquids... pureed foods only and only very tiny amounts. It's a normal place to be right now. Talk to a counselor. Go to support groups. But 3 weeks out is too early to be ready to throw in the towel. Find your strength and commitment that you had going into this surgery.
