Starting Victoza
GracefullyInsane replied to HRHMKB's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Hi Kierra, I had a lapband originally. Most recently I had the d/s (Duodenal Switch). I wish I would have done the d/s first! Miya -
Autism/Mental illness/Bad Support and WLS
GracefullyInsane replied to Tierra T Tij's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello there, I don't know where you're at with the whole approval process, so this advice may be too late. I have Bipolar Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I didn't say a word to my surgeon or anyone else in the office. It's none of their business. PM me if you have further questions. It sounds like you have your share of challenges. Hang in there. Best wishes to you. -
Starting Victoza
GracefullyInsane replied to HRHMKB's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
A combination of Victoza and Metformin was the only thing (with a proper diet) that helped me lose weight, even after my first WLS. I'm Insulin Resistant, I have PCOS and my body excels at creating fat cells. After my most recent WLS, the d/s, my surgeon told me to stop taking both of these meds, so I did. My weight loss practically stalled, despite walking nearly 3 miles a day, 5 days a week. I learned that he advised me to stop taking these meds because I wouldn't need them since I wasn't ingesting much sugar. I spoke with my pharmacist and she advised me that even with very little sugar in my diet, these meds wouldn't hurt me. So I began taking them again and my weight loss is improving. I don't think my surgeon really understands the whole Insulin Resistant thing. It's more in the realm of Endocrinology. I will continue to take the combo until I reach my weight loss goal, but I'll have my PCP supervise it. Best of luck to you! -
Too much iron now constipated and nauseous
GracefullyInsane posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I made a mistake and took 2 Iron tabs, 65 mg each. My iron was really low, I could tell because my RLS was acting up big time. Anyway, dinner just sort of stuck in my tummy overnight, still feels like it's there, and I've become increasingly nauseous as well. I'm able to pass gas, so there isn't a permanent blockage or anything. Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm sipping Water slowly this morning hoping things will naturally ease along. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm 2 weeks post op and until this moment was recovering really well. Thanks! -
Strange back pain post op out of nowhere
GracefullyInsane posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello all. My surgery was Feb. 22, and since the operation, I've noticed some back pain that I've never experienced before. It a dull ache, and it usually lasts all day, and it only affects the muscles on either side of my spine. I spoke to my PA about it and she suggested that sometimes, as our posture changes, there can be back pain. But I've only lost 25 lbs. or so, so I can't imagine that would be it. I've always had good posture, too. I wonder if I'm not understanding her remark? She referred me to my primary care doc for further investigation if it persists. Anyone else experience this or something similar to it? What helped? What caused it? Did it finally go away? This is going on nearly every day, so I'd appreciate any feedback on the matter. Thanks!- 14 replies

Strange back pain post op out of nowhere
GracefullyInsane replied to GracefullyInsane's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks for all of your responses. Djmohr, you poor thing! I'm so sorry you've suffered. I guess this could be kidney pain, although it doesn't seem low enough for that. However, I'm scheduling an appointment with my primary care doc to look into it further. I used to see a chiropracter and get get massages/adjustments following a car wreck years ago. That would be a simple solution. We'll see what my doc says. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. I'll try to remember to post again when I learn what's going on. -
Forget the numbers on the scale, how about clothing sizes?
GracefullyInsane posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Hello all. I see lots of posts about weight loss and numbers and what the scale shows during the first few months following a DS. I've also seen a few photo 'journals' that demonstrate what the weight loss looks like over time. Did anyone keep track of their clothing size as they lost weight the first 3-6 months? Would anyone care to share how their clothing size changed during that time? I know it's different for everyone, I'm just curious. Thanks so much! -
I'm scared too. My surgery is scheduled for April 22nd. I'm converting from a lapband to a DS. I'm told that the DS has a much higher success rate, that it's a much more effective tool. In the end, the difference is me. But I'm moving forward. We just have to move forward. Hang in there. Your post was way back in October so I hope you're all taken care of now. Good luck.

Great information ladies, thank you. Numbers tell just part of the story. I'm hoping to shrink rapidly. I'm pretty amazed at how quickly some of you dropped sizes. Wow. Impressive. I should have been asking about fitness, too. I won't be running any marathons overnight, but I'm guessing most of you were consistant with working out a little bit. -
Frightened of failing ... Surgery in a week
GracefullyInsane posted a topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Hello everyone, So my surgery is a week from Monday, on the 22nd. I'm feeling really frightened lately, and I can't shake it. Did any of you experience this feeling? I'm converting from a band to a D/S. The band worked really well for a few years. Then it slipped and the weight just piled on. I feel like a failure. I have so much weight to lose now. I'm fearful that something will go wrong and I'll be the one that the surgery doesn't work for. Is that silly? I'm walking, following my liquid/protein diet, doing my abdominals and trying to stay positive, but I'm really worried. If any of you can relate I'd love to hear how you overcame this awful dread and fear. I'd also love to hear how you did in spite of it all! There seems to be a lot of success stories in this forum. I just don't want to be one of the failures, you know? Thanks to all! -

A huge thanks to everyone for sharing their thoughts and stories with me. I'm feeling comforted and encouraged. I still can't fathom being 'normal', but I'm a lot more calm inside. Thank you....!!!
