  1. Newbie here! Just started the process in December with a probable date in June if all hoops are jumped through. My surgeon requires a liver reduction diet which is also supposed to prepare me for my diet after surgery. I'm already at my surgery weight of 245 (5'3) and worry about losing too much more weight. My weight at referral was 277. I will sorely miss Pasta, bread, and all those sweet carb Snacks but I'll survive. I have no idea how I will go completely sugar free. I have psudotumor cerebri and am completely banned from artificial sugars. I cannot stand stevia or surlacose. I'm on topamax so I can't taste carbonated drinks. coffee with cream and sugar in the morning is my life. I can substitute the cream but not the sugar. Fruit! I love fruit! I eat two apples a day. Bananas are often breakfast. Raspberries dessert or a snack. Oranges I can eat by the crate. I also have Vitamin deficiencies my pcp was trying to solve by food. How strict are people with the liver diet? Is sugar absolutely a dealbreaker? Is fruit something I'm never going to be able to enjoy again?
  2. My body has never been thin and I've been OK with that. I'm 5'3 and the last time I weighed what I am supposed to was in the 5th grade. Size 10-12 is perfect to me. Towards the end of high school though I started to slowly gain. I didn't know it at the time but bipolar disorder was settling into my bones and I wouldn't be properly diagnosed or treated for 10 years. So I did what any insane person needs to do to slow things down: drink myself into oblivion or Ambien. Two problems with these choices. With drinking you can drink too much and the next think you know your cooking a 5 course meal in the kitchen or you've decided to order takeout. With Ambien you do all of the above as well as eat ALL.THE.SNACKS but you won't remember any of it. Manic? Sure you eat less but again if drinking is involved so is food. Other people go on expensive shopping sprees when manic. I would go to expensive eating establishments, especially sushi and bring 3 friends. Finally get diagnosed. Get put on a med that caused me to gain 20+ lbs in a month. Dr's response to my complaint? "Learn to close your mouth" Drug almost kills me. Find my miracle drug but at a cost. A slow process over time. I would never feel full. I was always feel hungry. The few times I lost access to this drug this sensation goes away. Unfortunately another drug will not do. For a long time I though I had two choices: fat or crazy. Insurance doesn't pay for wls if it's drug induced. Finally in the 250s I developed sleep apnea and qualified. In the time from my sleep study to my referral for wls I developed psudotumor cerebri and gained to my highest weight of 277. During my search for treatment of the psudotumor I was put on topamax and currently it completely counters my psych meds hunger effects. I don't want to be on topamax forever tho and it's not enough to get me to a healthy weight. Years of antipsychotics and dieting have proved that. Currently I weigh 245 and am hoping the sleeve will bring me down another 100 lbs!

    Meds and weight gain

The whole reason for choosing the sleeve is because of the need to be able to stay on my psych meds. I've also talked extensively with my nut about other needs for other conditions. I need fat for my psych meds to be absorbed and she's saying that there will be enough in my post op diet but I'm not so sure. There is definitely a disconnect in nutrition school about the dietary needs of people on psych meds and how these meds have affected our bodies. I've met with a nutritionist in the past and I showed my pcp and pdoc the recommended diet and was told absolutely not when it came to low fat everything. Meds and weight gain

My surgeon said that with a reduced stomach that there would be fewer hunger chemicals released. A lower weight could also mean a lower dose of psych med. I also plan on staying on the maintenance med that counteracts the hunger affect. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using BariatricPal
  8. How did you transition your pantry and fridge? What about those of you who have family members who need weight gain? Tomorrow I'm going to the grocery store for a few things to start out with but am not sure what to pick. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using BariatricPal

    Vitamins, Vitamins, and more Vitamins

I have problems with Vitamin absorbency. It took a year to get my Vitamin D levels up. My psudotumor meds are screwing with some others. I have to take pills already. Is there a liquid Multivitamin? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using BariatricPal
  10. I gave away a bunch of food today at work. Shopping this weekend is going to be interesting!
  11. Fruits, starchy veggies, and carbs are banned for the liver reduction diet. So is sugar and fatty products. Another kink in my diet plan is my daughter is a 5% weight child and I can see between my husband's legs as he walks. They want me to focus on Protein intake. I'm also not the cook. Shopping next month is going to be interesting.
  12. The reason for the sleeve is because it also cuts down on the hormones that induce hunger. Seroquel is the weigh gainer. And nope. Not dealing with Stevia. Tastes like ass. Been trying it for years. Will cut out except for a tiny bit for surgery and after in moderation.
  13. I have until some time in June/July before surgery and am already at my surgery weight. Again, my NUT isn't expecting me to fully start the diet yet.
  14. I am being a bad girl this week and eating this: http://www.businessinsider.com/r-in-february-chicago-goes-crazy-for-paczki-as-donuts-go-gourmet-2016-2 Polish husband has to have them and my nut's plan isn't to start overly restricting yet.
  15. Cuban coffee and breves. Espresso machine. Espresso coffee. Typically french roast. Nut has not mentioned protein supplements. Apparently this program expects everyone to do it with food. 60-70 grams of protein a day via 5 meals. Congrats at being the lucky few. Though I take 300mg a day.
  16. I'm banned from all of the above.
  17. Topamax is an anti-seizure drug that is also used for migraines and drug-induced weight gain. One of the major side effects is the complete inability to taste carbonation. You can't even feel the bubbles in your mouth. The soda tastes very acidic and outright disgusting.

Healthcare Exchange: States that do not cover Bariatric Sugery

Wisconsin covers it under Medicaid. They are covering my surgery.
  19. I guess I'm confused about the difference between things that are not to be eaten permanently and things that are not to be eaten temporarily. My nut basically said carbs like pastas and breads were probably never going to be on my menu again but everyone is different.
  20. My nut's plan is to switch to decaf next month. I don't think there is a plan for a liquid diet other than right before surgery.
  21. My program has me doing core exercises to help post op recovery and to tone the tummy area
  22. I haven't had more than a sip of soda for 9 months (to see if the medication effect went away) so I think I'll survive without if soda causes that much of an issue. I just would like a little sugar in my morning coffee or herbal tea. With all the other things I'm cutting out that tiny bit shouldn't have a huge affect.
  23. I live for the day that I'm off topamax and can taste carbonation again but I'm told that's a big no no after surgery. I wasn't a huge soda drinker but I did enjoy a raspberry ginger ale or a Mexican coke every so often
  24. Tho I qualified for surgery because of apnea, I'm mostly having it because the weight is medication induced...which led to apnea, psudotumor cerebri, and a bunch of other fun issues. I don't understand why insurance refuses to recognize the health risks of medication induced weight gain. My surgeon hopes that I'll be able to significantly cut down on my medications. I'll gladly trade them for supplements!
  25. NUTs first month's goal was one cup of coffee a day. Three meals a day with Protein and one serving of fruit a day. I understand sugar is to be avoided but can just a bit in my tea or coffee be OK? I'm talking 2 tsp here....
