Sumaire got a reaction from theantichick in Flip flopping family member(s)
My daughter hasn't flipflopped, but she's been unsupportive. She's afraid that something bad will happen and that I'll die because of the surgery, which is scheduled for 10/27/16, a week after my birthday.

    MAN, what a birthday present!

For a long while, she was nagging at me, grabbing any negative statistic she could find about the surgery, but I didn't let it obviously get to me.

The nagging has stopped, and now she's doing the whole "well, we won't be able to eat together now" thing, which you all and I know isn't the case.

My Mom, who, a couple years ago, told me that I should look into it, as I am morbidly obese, and have several serious health issues as a result, hasn't responded to my last two emails to her, where I first told her that my information had been submitted to insurance for surgery approval, and then my email to her last Wednesday, telling her that it had been approved.

Family is weird, I suppose. We just have to find a way to deal with it.

I'm not taking the chance of having a negative reaction from people. I have 3 cheerleaders, my mom, husband and best friend. The most important thing is I want to be as healthy and active as I possibly can. Hang in there. This is your time.

I told limited people and waited till a couple of weeks before surgery to do that. My kids were stunned. Worried about how risky it was and then acted as if I didn't tell them. Another family member, who never dealt with weight, stated how all she had to do to be healthy was make a life style change. People who haven't dealt with the physical and emotional pain of obesity don't understand doing this. We are doing it for ourselves. Good luck to you.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.
Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. So essentially, the approach is not counting calories, carbs and fats during the "Weight Loss" phase. Eventually after several months you will slide into the "Maintenance" phase, and the approach in that phase is different and you can go back to counting calories, carbs and fats.

You know how the cliche goes about knowing something like the back of your hand? I wish I had taken photos of my hands and feet because I think they look very different, but because I have no photos, I can't prove it to myself! I do know that the dimples on my knuckles are gone, and my hands don't look like my hands! (I have gone down 3 ring sizes since November!)

I guess I should now be over on the POST gb forum, but I wanted to post this here so that people about to get the surgery know what it might be like.
I was sooo nervous and sooo emotional! I had no IDEA how much of a hold, food has over me! Since I use it to cope, I've been crying a lot lately. I really need to get some psychiatric help so that I can find a healthy outlet for my emotions instead of using food.< br />Other than that, my surgery went amazing! I was in there for 3 and a half hours. It was done laparoscopically and it took so long because I have a LOT of scar tissue in that area from previous surgeries.
I woke up in hardly any pain and never really HAD any pain at all, except for the gas. The gas is what hurt the most. So on the second day, I was up and walking the halls, doing about 4 trips around the two nursing stations and other rooms in the center in an hour.
I was released yesterday and love being home! Things are just like they used to be, except I can't pick up and hold my cat, he's too heavy. I can't vacuum and do most of the chores I used to do but I can wash the dishes and keep the kitchen looking nice. Also, I have to be up and walking every hour too! I only walk for about 5 minutes because I'm not used to exercise and it hurts my legs and back really bad. But I will build that up to 10 minutes in no time.
So all in all, it went great! Hardly any pain and no more hunger! Oh, although! When I see some commercials (and I cannot BELIEVE how many commercials there are for food!) it makes me REALLY desire them! Even though I'm not hungry, I STILL want them. And that's what scares me and what I need counseling for.
I'm still on the clear liquid diet for another 4 days and then go to full liquids which I can't wait for! Too much sweet stuff (drinks, popsicles and jello) on the clear liquid diet. lol
So I hope this has helped and was good to read for some of you! Good luck!

Funny how all the pre-op and post op diets differ. I can have 2 meals a day consisting of 3 oz Protein, 2 cups greens with non fat dressing, and 1/2 c non starchy veggies. In addition I have 3 protein supplements a day ( Soup, shake, pudding, etc). I can have SF Jello, popsicles, etc. I can eeven have a Lean Cuisine as long as it is under 300 cals and at least 15 gms protein. I am never hungry and cannot get it all in. Lord all the Vitamins are enough to fill you up! LOL!

I am currently scheduled for surgery on October 7th at Dartmouth. I am excited and terrified... but mostly excited.
By eating smaller meals throughout the day and following my workout plan (4x wk) established by a trainer, I've managed to lose weight during the past 5 weeks as I make my slow transition to the 2 wk Pre-op diet.

    CW 319
    Goal Weight 240lbs.
    Here's to the future...
Best of luck to all my fellow October Buddies!!

I know a lot of people are against food funerals. I however am not.
I ate whatever I wanted until I start pre-op and I found that it helped me get through the weeks of not eating, and also I really didn't eat as much as I thought I would. Most people have anywhere from 3-5 weeks they are not chewing anything. Looking back on those food funerals I was able to get over not eating.
I'm sorry about your family, but you don't need your aunts approval or support. It would be nice, but you can do this alone. Good luck.

My approval process was delayed for a while, so I had a few months of last meals/food funerals. I really feel like I got most of it out of my system. My surgery is on Monday, so it's too late now!

Sumaire reacted to Browneyedgirl41 in Umm, how do you tell your daughter she might need this?
One day my dad just brought it up when we were on the subject of my weight while eating a delicious dinner out! At first I was taken a back. I thought to myself- am I that "big" that I need it?
Then I thought- I am going to look into it. Plus he said he woukd pay for it! At 200 lbs, from a girl who had always been always at 120-130 lbs, he was concerned for my health and wanted me to lbs healthy and louvd to be around, not only for him and my mom but my little boy as well. He also knew I was not unhappy that my weight was a big party of that.
I was not offended. I was 39 and way past being sensitive about my weight. I think at 24, I would have been more sensitive. Handle it with kid gloves. Gosh, at age 24, I had so much fun post college, dating and traveling amd honestly, your 20's are often the best you'll ever look. I'd hate to see her miss out on all that.

I wanted sleeve, but my surgeon recommended bypass as I had diabetes for years and bypass could get rid of it. I'm happy with the choice! I am nearly 5 months out from the surgery date and have lost 55 lbs so far. There have been no complications so far.
