I've experienced it with a few things. The oddest being miso soup. It's fairly bland to begin with. I always kept some miso paste packets at work for a mid morning snack, and expected to continue to do so after my RNY. Can't stand them now though. Strange. I'm probably posting from my phone. Please excuse any typos!

Why did you pick this surgery?
BackAgain replied to Cali_love89's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Since I had already failed with a restrictive only procedure, I chose to go with rny for my revision. Also I had developed sever GERD and the sleeve is known to make it worse. One other thing: someone above wrote that rny is not reversible. It actually is. Im not sure how often it is done, but it is done. The sleeve, however, is not reverible due to part of the stomach being removed. The sleeve can be revised into a rny bypass. -
I use lose it to track calories, protein, fat, and carbs. I use the Fitbit app to track exercise and water intake. For both, I use the iOS apps and the desktop sites.

BCBS FEP approval experience please!
BackAgain replied to Keenikwe's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have FEP Blue and had RNY on 7 March. My initial submission was rejected because of no evidence that I was nicotine free for either 6 months or year ( can't recall right now what the standard wasc, but it's in the benefit guide). I've never smoked so I was surprised it was an issue. My surgeon then ordered a blood drawn nicotine test to meet BCBS requirements. This added like 2 weeks to my timeline, as the hospital could not do the test on site and had to send it out to LabCorp. -
I've not tried broccoli, but I love Brussel sprouts. My nut said all vegetables were open game during mushy phase IF they were cooked to a mushy state. I found Green Giant steamer packs, when cooked about 5 minutes longer than recommended on label, produce a very nice and mushy Brussel sprout. I could tolerate them very well early on and it was in compliance with my NUT, so I felt good about them.

I commented on your post over on reddit, but I like this site for asking questions better lol. First, congrats on your weight loss. Outstanding! How many calories are in taking in per day? Any tips you would give someone who is a week and a half out, like myself? -
Hey guys, just got my EOBs for the surgery and hospital stay afterwards. I thought fellow FEPBlue or Federal BC/BS members might be interested: 1. Two night stay in the hospital after surgery. Of note, the hospital is a BC/BS Bariatric Center of Excellence. My total copay was $350. The hospital requested $175 upfront and advised they would bill or refund once the EOB came in... so I guess they will be hitting me up for some more cash lol. 2. Copay to Surgeon was $200. I had a lap band removal and then RNY during same surgery. Each procedure was listed as a separate line item, but only the band removal listed a copay. 3. There was no copay for anesthesia services. All in all it looks my my total out of pocket for the two procedures (performed same day) is $550.

I was recently approved on my second submission for converting Lap Band to RNY. My first submission was in December. It took about 5 days for the denial. However, I was provided a specific list of why it was denied: No evidence of compliance for previous surgery (lap band), no evidence to support that I did not use nicotine, and no documentation from my family doctor stating that he had not treated me for substance abuse in the previous 2 years (it may have only been previous year, I dont have my records in front of me). To address these requirements: 1. My surgeons office prepared a memo outlining my history of coming in for band follow up appoints. Many fills and then un-fills due to GERD, etc. 2. My family doctor prepared the required substance abuse letter. 3. I had to have blood drawn for a nicotine test. This part caused the longest delay, since the hospital which drew the blood did not conduct the nicotine test in-house, but had to send it out to LabCorp. My surgeons office resubmitted my package on 27 Dec and I was approved on Jan 4th. I hope that helps answer your question.

Similar timeline here as well. Banded in Feb 2008. Lost 80lbs, maintained for a year or so. Then the reflux and GERD started, and my Doc unfilled my band a little at a time. I treated getting fills again, but every time I did, relux and gerd returned. Gave up for a few years and just lived with an empty band. Weight crept back up. This past August I started the process to get approved for conversion to RNY. I received my approval last week and am set for surgery the first week in March. -
OP, Did you use Dr. Miles and Schmidt in Bham?
