Hey everyone, I'm up early this morning. So, last night I slept on my bed instead of the recliner. I thought i was up to it. I tried to roll over in my sleep to my side and I woke up in excruciating pain. It felt like I tore a muscle in or something. It hurt even to take a deep breath. I woke up hubby and he got me some lortab. I had been just taking tylenol. Well, the lortab has now made the pain a dull ache. I don't know what I hurt or if I did some major damage. I'm thinking positively that probably I just pulled the muscle or something. It feels like its right under the incision that is furthest left on my midsection- which is not the port area or where the band would be located. Anyhoo- other than that I've been feeling a lot better. In fact, I was FINALLY able to drink a couple of normal sized sips of cold Water with no problems. No more baby sips on the water thankfully. Oh, and I'm NOT hungry Woooohoooo!!! How's everyone else?

I thought maybe those of us with PCOS need our own ongoing thread and place to go for our specific issues and concerns. If you've been banded and you have PCOS I think those of us in the waiting or research stage really need your advice. Has it been hard(er) to lose weight even with the band? Do you follow specific dietary guidelines that are helping? Are your symptoms improving? Let's get together and share our questions and/or experiences!!! Polycystic ovary syndrome: Abbreviated PCOS. hair growth. PCOS is a disorder of chronically abnormal ovarian function and hyperandrogenism (abnormally elevated androgen levels). It affects 5-10% of women of reproductive age. PCOS is also called the Stein-Leventhal syndrome. Women with PCOS do not ovulate -- they do not release an egg every month -- and they are at significantly higher risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer of the uterus (endometrial cancer). Much of this risk can be reversed by exercise and weight loss. Medication is generally prescribed to induce regular periods, thereby reducing the risk of uterine cancer. For acne and excess hair growth, the diuretic spironolactone (Aldactazide) can help. And for women who desire pregnancy, clomiphene (Clomid) can be used to induce ovulation. Studies have indicated that diabetic medications that are designed to improve the action of the hormone insulin may benefit women with PCOS. Long-term trials of these insulin-sensitizing drugs -- such as Avandia (rosiglitazone), Actos (pioglitazone), and Glucophage (metformin) -- for PCOS are underway. The results appear promising. A type of surgery called a "wedge resection" in which a piece of the ovary is removed also helps some women with PCOS. The cause of PCOS is unknown. However, the ovaries of women with the disease characteristically contain a large number of small cysts. Hence, the name polycystic ovary. Other common names are polycystic ovary disease, polycystic ovarian disease, and POD. Common Misspellings: polycystic ovary syndrone, polycistic ovary syndrome, polycistic ovary syndrone

I was just banded 6 days ago. I take a pill daily- I crushed it the first day...NASTY. I checked into a liquid form (250$ for a months worth) and finally I just took it whole with a sip of water....No problems! It probably just depends on the size and type. Talk your doctor and your pharmacist. Good luck!

Puddin- I took a look at your before and afters- you are so gorgeous! I would love love LOVE to be rid of PCOS. In fact, knowing the health problems that pcos can cause in my future was a MAJOR motivation for me going through with the surgery. I really like Dr. Hansen. When they wheeled me into the OR the last thing I remember is the nurses telling me that Dr. Hansen was so great and they'd trust him to operate on them any day!! Then it all got blurred in with the christmas music they were pumping in the room and I was out. :faint: I've also emailed the staff asking questions and they've always gotten back to me in MINUTES. SO glad to have found them!

Actually yes, I'm still sore too. I was getting low on the pain killers so now I'm just taking liquid tylenol and it doesn't have quite the same effect. I was banded December 18 (5 days ago) in Salt lake City UT.

Sweethot, it does seem that we are going through pretty much the same things. I have very little energy too, and am quite tired, which I assume is from not getting enough protein? But still, its soooo hard to get the protein and even enough drinks in. I hope the fact that we are both going through the same thing means that it is fairly normal. I really hope I can get some energy back soon. As far as the chest pains when eating, I;m going to have to drink MUCH slower and take in like a few tablespoons I guess. NOT that that will help me get in the protein but maybe then I can avoid the pain. Ya know?

Pinkmary, congrats that's awesome about your weight loss, getting rid of pcos and your pregnancy.....And for the reminder to me that i may need to double-up on birth control for awhile! lol I've got my hands full already!

Well I'm on day 5 post op and today my period came. Lovely. The cramps and bloating added to the soreness and gassiness- SIGH. I guess I should take it as a positive that my period is coming on its own, but I just didn't want to deal with it quite yet. How's everyone else doing?

Hey Tazboobecky, You are NOT alone. I had surgery on the 18th as well. It's been somewhat different than I expected, but I really didn't have clear expectations anyway! My thing is that I'm trying to figure out this whole hungry/not hungry thing. I mean, I think I feel hungry and then after a sip or two of my drink and I feel this slight pressure in my chest and then I either hiccup or get that feeling of needing to hiccup. I asked on here on the boards and am being told that that is the restriction. So I'm starting to get that I'm going to have to relearn my body and what I call hunger and what I call full. This is like a whole new world. I've been craving real food here and there but then I picture myself losing weight and I really think I can get through this. Anyway, don't feel stupid because it takes time to figure out how to use all this stuff. I'm not good at explaining things so hopefully someone else can let you know how to work the board aspect of this. Good luck and keep in touch!

Okay so I was banded yesterday but so I'm confused. I'm on clear liquids right now, but here's what's happening. When I drink like 1/2 cup of liquid within a few minutes time period, I get this pressure feeling in my chest and I hiccup a couple of times. Well this is what I've heard people on this board describe a stop feeling to be like. However, I thought clear liquids go right through the band and don't stop? The strangest thing is that while I'm feeling this pressure I can simultaneously feel my stomach churning and feeling empty, and feels like I'm really hungry. I'm really quite confused....anyone else experienced this? Am I hungry or am I full?!?!?
-
Sweethot, I know what you mean about feeling like I broke up with food. Everyone around me is enjoying these great foods and just the smell is driving me crazy. But, I am not physically hungry. I think the swelling is causing enough restriction right now that just the Clear Liquids are keeping me from hunger today. Still, I want to get to the point where I see food and and don't give it a second thought! Anyways, 2 days post op and healing up just fine. Still some pain but most of the gas pain is gone and I'm just sorta sore. Honestly the gas pain right after surgery was worse than any of the incision pains. Hope everyone else isn't having as much problem with the dang Christmas goodies I am. Everyone is so giving with FOOD this time of year!!! This is the first Christmas season I dread hearing the doorbell ring because I know its another plate of goodies I can't have. Oh well, I'll survive!

10 hours post op and some quick questions!!
mypov replied to mypov's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey guys, thanks for all your help and advice. The leg pain is gone thankfully. I really think they were just in an awkward position or something after surgery but no pain left in them now. Walking really does help too- my gas pain is mild but every now and then it starts to start up a little so as soon as I walk I feel much better. As for the apple juice, I ended up emailing the dietician at the surgery center (got a reply in 20 minutes woohoo!!) and she said that they'd really like me to stick to only see-through liquids and I should use things like Isopure that already come premixed and still clear. Oh well, on Saturday I start fuller liquids and can use my Protein powders and stuff then. Again, thanks for all the info!!! -
10 hours post op and some quick questions!!
mypov posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey I have some quick questions (quick cause the gas pains are quite uncomfortable and I don't want to be on the computer long). 1. I added some unflavored Protein mix to my apple juice but it made the mixture a little thicker. Is this ok or should I not worry about protein tonight? 2. Did anyone else have leg pain? My calves are sore like I had leg cramps but my surgeon checked them and said it was no problem, so I was just curious. 3. Gee I had more but I need to walk or something now. But if you know the other answers, please let me konw thanks!!! Oh, an update on my progress can be read at findingwhisler.blogspot.com -
My big day is tomorrow!! I leave for the hospital at 4 am, just 7 hours from now. I can't believe it's finally here! I really thought the closer I got the more scared I would feel- but honestly right now I just wanna jump in the car and drive down there!! Unfortunately hubby doesn't want to sleep in the hospital parking lot until the surgery center doors open....What's with THAT!?!?! :speechles :speechles jk.... Thanks to the seminars, the research, the books (Laproscopic Adjustable Banding by Jesse Ahroni and Weight loss surgery for dummies) the support of those around me and of COURSE the awesome people here at lapbandtalk.com!!!! I feel nothing but excited and prepared..... Thanks everyone!!!! How did you all feel?

30 or so hours until surgery
mypov replied to Kaydotrn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Kay, I know what you are going through. I'm 20.5 hours away (but who's counting right? I'm really nervous, really excited and trying to figure out what last minute details to take care of. AHHHHhhhh here we go!! Good luck! -
I keep thinking of all these little questions with surgery right around the corner lol....Please humor me, anyone know why my surgeon says not to wear make up for surgery? I hate not wearing makeup.....thanks!!!
-
So about how long were you in the hospital for from admittance to release with this surgery? I have mine on monday and I'm trying to figure out approximately what time to tell my kids I'll be home. Thanks!
-
Cause first you're on an all liquid diet, so obviously it's not then. Do you wait until you are on solids? Mushies? Pureed? Just wondering. Thanks!

Mine have always been on the smaller size. Even with all this weight I've gained it's really been concentrated on my belly area and without a good pushup bra they're practically non-existent. I often wonder if this is due to my hormonal problems....all the other women in my family are perfectly endowed. Bummer for me. I told my hubby that after I lose weight I plan to have them pinned back up to where they should be- so basically I'm expecting that they'll sag. I really don't like the look of faken's (personal opinion only, not meant to insult anyone) but I wouldn't mind having a perky pair for the first time in my life!!! Hubby claims he doesn't like the look of fake one's either. I have chosen to believe him and leave it at that :biggrin1: :biggrin1: !

How long at the hospital everyone?
mypov replied to mypov's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To add more info, my doc said its rare for his patients to have to stay overnight. Also, I'm the first one of the morning so by 8 am I'd say I'll be in there. -
ok I understand. Without trying to sound like too much of an idiot (too late prolly lol) can I leave my toe nail polish on?

Dr. Phil tomorrow with Sharon Osborne
mypov replied to Chris S. - L.I.'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I heard her say something about having problems with Acid reflux as well. Overall I got the impression she felt that the band was masking her eating issues not curing them- and she wanted to get behind the reason and try to maintain her wieght "on her own". STill, she certainly could have been more specific about the WHY question....I guess with her money though mb its not a big issue to take it out since if she decides to put it back in its just pennies to her. *shrug* -
I am about 90% sure I have sleep apnea. I told that to my surgeon at my pre-op consultation and told him that I hadn't had the study done but I also don't have insurance right now (BECAUSE of my weight btw). He said that about 80% of the people with obesity have undiagnosed sleep apnea and being a bariatric surgeon, he just takes that in to consideration and takes the same precautions with everyone. He also said that's one reason they require that after surgery you have a support person who can be up awake watching you for 24 hrs following the surgery because of the affects of the anesthesia in relation to sleep apnea. *shrug* makes no sense to me why some docs want PROOF that you have it or don't- when they could just take the necessary precautions anyway. That's one reason why I like my surgeon is his office is clearly geared toward those who are obese. No one makes you feel bad about your weight, the nurses he hires often are lapbanders themselves, and even the chairs in his office are oversized. Guess I'm ranting, others may have more of an idea of why proving it is so important. I don't....good luck to you!

I heard that while some doctors swear it makes a difference, not every doctor thinks it is significant enough to matter. My doctor just wants me to stop eating and drinking by midnight the night before. I have been much more in tune with my body's hunger/satisfied signals, as well as increasing my Water intake. Other than that its business as usual for me. Good luck!

My extended family (parents, siblings etc) are all getting together this Christmas and they worry that my having surgery on Dec 18 will mean Christmas will be difficult for everyone. They are getting this idea because my Dad had major back surgery in September and was pretty much recliner chair-ridden for a month. he needed help with EVERYthing and the pain meds pretty much knocked him out most of the time. I'm trying to assure everybody that though slightly less mobile (I am less mobile anyway because of my excess weight) that I will be in good spirits and getting around. I will, right? I mean, I don't want to lie to them but maybe it will take me awhile to recover. Still I my husband will be around that week to help me out- but I don't wnat to ruin anyone's holiday.
