    Reaction to surgical tape

I told them I was allergic to most adhesives (thinks like band-aids "melt" into me, leaving big welts), and sensitive to prolonged exposure to latex. They still put tape over my staples, and sure enough - when they pulled the tape off, my skin came with it. Those "wounds" caused me more discomfort than my actual incisions. Going from my own 20/20 hindsight, just press the issue with them. Ask what they have as an alternative. Make sure your admitting nurse documents it on your chart. I wish I'd been more persistent in getting it recognized, but I assumed...

BTW Cate - thanks again for the clothes! I'll bring your duffle to my fill appt today, I'm sure we'll see each other at some point. Ladies -t hanks for a fun and pleasantly "deep" evening! I think the wait staff got as much out of it as we did.

Pmed ya. (message is to short to post so I have to add add'l text)
  4. NIN was great like 10 - 15 years ago. I can remember seeing them playing small venues and doing "new" songs from PHM album. My I am getting old. You have no idea how many memories you just brought back. I was born & raised in San Diego, grew up listening to 91X, going with my middle high friends to see Echo & the Bunnymen. What about Flojos? Do they even exist outside of San Diego? I went to the same middle school as Tony Hawk, after him of course, and I can remember everyone gathering to watch him skate on the dirt lot in front of the school. I moved here and skating became a thing of the past. :/
  5. People ask me if I can eat it, or tell me where we eat is up to me since I'm the one who needs the special diet. It doesn't bother me a bit. They don't know, and I'd rather they ask than make assumptions.

    How do you eat?

To me being full and being stuck - completely different. Being full feels no different than it did pre-op, I just get there a lot sooner. Being stuck hurts and makes me feel generally crappy. The only relation between the two is - if something gets stuck, and passes - no matter how little I ate before the stick, I'm full for about 10 hours.
  7. I'm not seasoned but I have a band and have healed from the surgery. My port area hurt the longest, by far. It went for a period of not hurting, then started hurting again, but only with certain movements. It hurt enough that it would take my breath away when it happened, and it was a deep muscuar hurt. It went away after about 4 days, overnight.

    Success Diet for Bandsters!!

You know, at goal -- if I'm lucky -- my leg will fit in a size 9. And there's some misinformation in his message regarding ketosis, etc. It's simply not safe to avoid carbs. Protein, when that's all you're getting, is toxic to the body. On Atkins I ate 20 carbs per day or fewer, for an entire year, and even that 20 was pushing it... I HAD to get the Water in to help flush things through, or deal with the consequences. Appetite supressants? Not supplements? I don't know anyone who could survive on a protein-only diet, without supplements, and make it beyond a few weeks. Take away the potassium for a week or so and your muscles are going to start rebelling big time.

What is everyone having for lunch today? Fat free turky hotdog, pepperoni chips, cottage cheese and iced decaf tea for me. BTW am I the only freak who will try and avoid eating or drinking anything on the days I get my fills, so I can weigh as close to naked as possible? :heh:

    Knowing when to stop eating

I stop eating when I am no longer hungry. Not when I'm full - just when I stop being hungry. The only time I will go beyond that is if I have to in order to meet a minimum Protein intake. For many of us "hunger" and "eating" are totally separate things. Focus on the hunger - not the eating.

What have you gained on a binge?

Haven't binged, not a binger - but a single binge is not going to do much to you . Any weight gain is likely from the break in ketosis, and should come off as soon as your ketosis is - reinstated. Tomorrow is always another opportunity. So is right now. (Meaning - the "tomorrow" syndrome kills plans, the "right now" doesn't).

How Do You Take Your Pills

Thank goodness I don't have any prescription meds to take. I was concerned about this pre-op b/c I popped Tylenol sinus like popcorn. Oddly enough - I've only had a handful since banding. I use liquid Tylenol (cherry, not vanilla - gag) with a chaser of liquid Benadryl. Works faster than the pills I used to take. I tried crushing the pills early on & mixing them in food but they were so vile I decided the pain was worth not having to taste it.

    How do you eat?

Do you place good options of food on your plate, as much as you want, and eat slowly, chewing until you're satisfied? I use a small side plate, or the tiny "piece of cake" sized paper plates. I take one of whatever I've made, e.g. one chicken tender, one spoon of Beans, etc. Chewing comes natural, but I still have to ficus on eating slow & bite size. What happens more often than not is I take a normal bite, but swallow it in portions - hope that makes sense. If I'm no longer hungry before my plate is clean, I stop. If I'm hungry after it's clean, I gp back and get a half of something - half a tender, half a spoon. I've only had to go back... once or twice. If I go out, I order a regular dinner. Most appetizers are fried or full of cheese and I try to avoid both... unless they have buffalo wings. Usually when I order I will also ask them to bring me a box. Then when the meal comes, I portion it and box up the rest before I start eating. I've found that if I don't do this, I will "pick" at my food and eat more than I need. If I'm at a place that doesn't have boxes, I'll push my napkin down into my food once I'm no longer hungry. Like I said - eating slow I need to watch. I generally chew so much that a fair amount of time passes between bites, but I tend to swallow all that I've chewed vs. the "portions" I mentioned above. This has lead me to PB before. Do you only place 4-6 oz. on your plate and make that last for 20 minutes until your brain kicks in? It's more like - I take the portion, and by the time I've chewed and swallowed it all, more than 20 minutes has passed. This is part of why I focus on foods I have to chew, vs soft foods that can pretty much go down on their own. I'll down cottage cheese in no time, but a piece of grilled pork tenderloin will last me much longer. (Actually what I usually do is combine them, put a little cottage cheese on my pork - helps to lube it up) What is your method, and how is it working for you? It's working ok. I still have concerns over how I will do when I get more restriction - whether what I'm doing will be alright, or if I'll be in for a rude awakening and have to readjust behaviors.

    Wrong foods

Your description sounds like a PB. Since you say it isn't a PB, how is it different? Your symptoms sound a little different from a "typical" PB, but my PB's aren't "typical" either. I always have pain to the sides of & below my bellybutton when something is stuck... every single time, and it sounds very similar to what you're describing. Actually you rentire description sounds very much like what I go through when I PB, except I also get a significant pain in my spine between my shoulderblades. Sometimes tiny bites and long breaks in between isn't enough. I'm convinced of this, because I've gotten stuck on things that shouldn't stick, on the tiniest bites possible - one bite in, ten bites in... completely random. Anyway, I'm not trying to say "you're just PBing", but just that it could be a PB that is different from what anyone is telling you a PB is like.

Chat programs - like Micorsoft Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), etc. ICQ is another popular one. Handy way to chat with people. It works kind of like the pager system on here. (DH is a MAJOR techie, I had to learn or be left behind)

I'll be around - just finished homework and hubby is at the gym. All I need to do is keep half an eye on the sprinklers.

    This is funny!!

Uhhh... that's surprisingly accurate. Our cable modem was down one night, on the same night that I had a school project due. Out of desperation I used one of the free AOL cds. I must have said "just cancel the account" at least 10 times - and that's a conservative guess. I tried to be polite, but that didn't last too long. I've been in a bind with internet connection since then, and I just pack up my laptop and head to Starbuck's or something... heck, evem McD's here has wireless in the lobby, and I'd rather sit in greasy quarter pounder air than deal with AOhell. BTW, I used to work in a call center - not on the phones, but I ran their training program. When one of our executives left, someone from AOhell took their place. Person made a lot of changes. Our customer satisfaction numbers were never lower. Our customers kept saying, "Forget the smile, just give me an answer. How come no one there can answer my questions any more?"

Do you set short term goals?

I'm full o' goals. IMO - any day is a series of constantly changing goals. You're going to get up early, or slept past X time. You're going to try and miss traffic. You're going to try and projects x, y, and z done at work, or meet some production goal. You're going to try and go to the kid's game and still make it home in time to watch CSI. You name it. I try not to set weightloss goals because I don't want to set myself up for disappointment. I used to, but now -- when my smaller clothes fit they fit - so no sense in putting a "deadline" to it (IMO). I've been there, done that, and felt the burn too many times. I set goals for school, e.g. which classes I'm going to enroll in when, when my graduation date will be, and when I will start my next program. Sounds more like an agenda, but it's all completely subject to change so I consider them goals. Most important is my goal to get an "A" so work will pay for it! DH and I set goals for the house - what "jobs" we'd like to get done by the end of summer, or by the end of winter. We set housecleaning goals each week, so before we do this really great thing on Saturday, let's try to have all laundry done and the carpet steam cleaned (that's when I call in a maid!) DH and I also set financial goals, short and long term. So we know what we want our combined income to be at the end of the year, and we know what figure we want to see in our 401k in 5 years.

So Robin, Holli - anyone else out there... do you guys tell Dr. Hoehn when you need a fill and let him "guesstimate" how much is needed? Billy told me once that he can "feel" how much fill to give you, but I don't think he's ever done it that way with me. First time was 1cc, automatic. Second time I told him I couldn't feel anything so he gave me another 1cc and said, "There, you'll feel that!" I have a fill appt scheduled for Fri and am debating whether or not to cancel. I'm still losing, and still get the occasional stick (not since Saturday) that takes care of itself without PB. I only PB when I make stupid mistakes. I'm tempted to sound completely stupid and go in there saying, "Stick me and figure out if I need more or not."

My PB #2 of 3 was at Mr. Greek. You know when you walk out the front door, the little parking lot, and on the far side of the parking lot there's the greenery & fence that separates it from the houses... look closely enough in that greenery and you're sure to find a little scrap of pita bread a la peebee. Ah, the memories... Call me wanker over "penis knee" any day! I'm up for anywhere, really. Methinks we'll need a place where we can be loud. If we want to go much uhh... - souther than the hospital, then those of us that live north can carpool (I can fit 5 others easily) and I can drop you guys back off at the hospital on the way home. Me also thinks there could be some dangers is publicizing this thread too much. :paranoid

Ok, speaking of body parts looking like something else underwater - you guys want to see something funny? Or just weird. But pretty funny. You have to promise not to hold it against me on Thursday (figuratively and literally). DH and I were in the pool just to "get wet" with our dive gear. He takes a picture of my leg underwater, for whatever reason. Now - your guess is as good as mine, but I'll be damned if the picture didn't come out looking like I have a wanker on my knee. My knees are normal knees, no hanging skin or anything, so we have no idea how this picture came out this way. First the entire leg, for effect, and then a closeup of my knee genetalia.
