Will Your Hair Grow Back?
Wheetsin replied to Lucky Lady 702's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pasting a previous response rather than retyping. The short answer is yes, your lost volume should return as soon as your hair follicles reenter anagen. -
Caloric Intake Is It Too Low
Wheetsin replied to simplyQuel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The average is about 30gm, if you're healthy, so your NUT's info is not too far off. That's why I spread it out into (about) 10gm (snack) or 20gm (meal or Protein drink). If I eat over 30 I don't count it. What's hard to define is what constitutes "at a time." If it's per meal, that's not really valid because a meal can easily last me two hours. If it's per time frame, there's virtually zero consistency. If it's per some completion of (or partial completion of) some body process... most people out there won't know when time's up. Etc. I use a 2 hour guideline, but that's just my own educated guess. -

Right now I'm drinking the Nature's Best RTD Isopure (whey Protein isolate) in Grape Frost. Here's the nutrition info (for a different flavor, couldn't find a good one for the grape). That's mostly for taste and viscosity. Prior to starting those, I'd just add 2 scoops of whatever brand powder instead of one. Every powder I have has at least 20gm per scoop (I think 23 is the lowest). -
Those models kill me. I used to muse -- If at my real life goal weight, I could look half as good as my current weight model looks, I'd be tickled pink.

I pooped without Miralax.

Anestesia Tube Damanged My Thoat Pretty Badly
Wheetsin replied to EbonyJ's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, other than the chloraseptic you could try an analgesic lozenge. I hesitated to suggest it because if you accidentally swallowed it, and it was big, that might not be good. And you'll want to check that it's 100% ok to take with the chloraseptic (if you take it). -
Anestesia Tube Damanged My Thoat Pretty Badly
Wheetsin replied to EbonyJ's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We get a double whammy because the bougie is inserted & removed through the mouth. I had a horrid sore throat when my band was removed. Honestly it was far worse than the strep I"d had just a few months before. You can try Chloraseptic. Make sure you spray it far back. It probably won't fix it but it should take some of the edge off. The nurses suggested I gargle saltwaer but gargling never does anything for me, except make me gag when I have to spit it out. -

Caloric Intake Is It Too Low
Wheetsin replied to simplyQuel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1 gram of Protein contains 4 calories. 60+ grams of protein = 240+ calories. So it's quite easy to get all your protein in and still have a very low caloric intake. My Protein drinks have 40gm of protein and 160 calories. I drink a half of one to a full one per day, depending on how much protein I get from my foods. Common foods I will eat for protein: Maguro (bluefin sashimi, per ounce): 6.6gm protein, 40 calories. I eat 2 - 4 oz, let's average it to 3 which would be 19gm protein, 120 calories. Gruyere cheese (per ounce): 9g protein, 115 calories. Pure Protein Choco PB (per bar): 20gm protein, 200 calories. So if I did a half a Protein Drink, 4 oz of maguro (throughout the day), 1 oz of Gruyere and 1/2 of a Protein Bar I would be at 65 grams of protein and 455 calories. -

Weird Cravings (Pica)
Wheetsin replied to shelleyrn22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok now - we wouldn't be here if we didn't have some type of food issue or another, but holy balls - that's just wrong! I love it. Did anyone ever tell him? -
Caloric Intake Is It Too Low
Wheetsin replied to simplyQuel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You'll get a lot of different opinions here. Usually higher calories (not "regular" intakes, but higher within our acceptable range) help people avoid stalls or stall for shorter periods of time. Long story short - your body doesn't freak out as much & is a little less likely to think it's starving. (Our bodies don't understand "diet" - they just know the food has all but stopped and that means trouble). 800 - 1000 seems to be a common goal range. Right now (sleeved 2 months ago) I average about 650. My nut is not happy with that and wants me closer to 850, and she wants to me to make the increase by upping complex carbs. It's hard, but I'm trying. This is in effort to try and break a stall I've had since about my 3rd week post-op, and I know she's right, so... I'm trying... but it's hard, physically, to eat much more. ETA: her goals for me to be closer to the 850 range include the fact that I'm fairly active & fairly tall for a female. B/c of this she also wants me getting in about 20 gm more Protein than their standard guidelines. Where am I supposed to fit all this??? -
I was allergic to something started at the hospital (which was everything but the Omeprazole pill), but I have no idea what. Since most of it was not optional, I was given Predinose and Sucralfate (coats the stomach, to help offset the problems Prednisone can cause) to take for a few weeks. Currently I'm only on the Omeprazole and not having any problems. Neutralizers like Tums & Mylanta seem to be generally ineffective with us. Have you tried Pepcid? (Famotidine) It's not a PPI, but is an H2 blocker -- it reduces acid production andis a histamine blocker. When I went to the ER for treatment of the allergy noted above, a Pepcid bolus was the first thing they gave me. The Dr. advised always having it on hand, just in case.

500 Pounds..surgery Date 5\21
Wheetsin replied to HondaCivicDude's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi & congratulations. Most likely residual gas. You're pumped full of CO2 during surgery. Sometimes some can linger, and unfortuately it's pretty painful. As you've figured out, walking helps. Heating pads always help me. You can also try laying on your left side & bending your right leg up as close to your chest as you can get it. Also some yoga poses that can help, but I don't think they'd make you feel any better this freshly post-op... more harm than good! Nausea & what not is fairly common. Part anesthesia, part your stomach was severed, part reaction to the meds - who knows. It should subside. I didn't have any so I can't tell you how long it took me to feel better, but seems like 3 - 4 days is a good bet. If your nausea gets bad, make sure you tell your nurse. They can give you Zofran or something similar through your IV and you should feel much better afterward. -
Weird Cravings (Pica)
Wheetsin replied to shelleyrn22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No worries, that's actually not pica at all. Those are nutritious things to eat. With pica you'd be craving/eating things like dryer sheets and dirt. I craved black Beans with wing sauce as soon as I hit mushies. I'd never eat those together normally, but they just sounded good. And wish relatively few options, we have to get a bit creative. Maybe our brans are in mushy overdrive. -
...hence my (almost daily) admonition that one man's "aha" is another man's "duh". And that's daily in my real life, not here.

Feeling Like A Failure
Wheetsin replied to peacequeen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No worries. Your plan is fairly restrictive but it wouldn't be that way if there hadn't been any success with it. My nutritionists want me eating more calories (I'm still working hard to hit 600 - 650 and they want me closer to 850) by adding more carbs. I'd been extremely low-carbing it, probably not many more than 20 a day. I'm not supposed to aim for 60. I'm trying to get most of it through nuts & fruits, and the occasional whole grain. She told me "Strawberries & crackers..." -
Slimes Every Night
Wheetsin replied to claudiahayden's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first thought was reflux. But reflux and watering mouth aren't at all the same thing (though you could have a watering mouth - our bodies do this when we think we're going to puke - if your body has interpreted the reflux as a bit of vomit... maybe... dunno) Are you taking a PPI? If not, this could be contributing to reflux. If so, it could be that your acid is neutralized enough (suppressed) that the acid being refluxed seems like it's just saliva. I know a lot of people this has happened with. But still... reflux is a very definite feeling... people usually wake up thinking they're puking, choking, or "wake up coughing" (more mild cases). -
You'll need to check with your insurance company. Generally if not covered for WLS, you are also not covered for complications.

Very Tired & Low Energy - 10 Days Post-Op
Wheetsin replied to trojanchick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's completely normal. Search for "fatigue" and you'll see story after story. Mine started just after the 1st week, and lasted intensely through week 3, started tapering during week 4. It's natural. -
Just like anything else, there are good ones and bad ones. And with that I will stop.

Feeling Like A Failure
Wheetsin replied to peacequeen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not all carbs are created equal - complex carbs vs. simple carbs. It's an important point to understand. Simple carbs are the "triggers" and quick injections that you want to avoid. They are not very good for us (trying to lose weight) but they have their purpose. Complex carbs arenecessary for a healthy diet. (Carbs aren't 100% necessary, you can live without them, but you wouldn't enjoy it very much) -
I'm going to be very forthright with you because I think you may have some misconceptions about what therapy is and is not, and those misconceptions might be causing an aversion to something that sounds like exactly what you might need. Please don't take this as "harsh" -- I don't think it is, but I certainly don't want it to come across as such. Have you ever been to therapy? (You don't have to answer that, just consider it a rhetorical question.) It doesn't seem like you have. Therapy is not for people who are broken or defective. EVERYONE is "defective." Everyone on this planet is neurotic. That's not a bad thing. Therapy is from people who would benefit from understanding their motives and the origins of their current selves. There are a lot of types of therpay, but I'm speaking generically here. There's a stigma that you only go to therapy or counseling to fix a problem: that you must have a mental problem if you have to talk to a mental health professional. If you tell someone you're in therapy, they tend to react in a "Oh... you're one of those..." kind of way. That's just not the case. America is GROSSLY under-therapied, and over-medicated. I'm not a psychologist nor a therapist, but I have a master's degree in psychology and a master's degree in human performance - very closely related fields, and that's not coincidence. A number of my peers have gone on to be clinicians... behavioral scientists, researchers, etc. And experts on human behavior should be about the most well-rounded people we know, right? EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM, without exception, sees a therapist. No one is trying to suggest you need "years of intensive therapy" - but it sounds like you might enjoy a confidant to talk to your problems about. I mean, you're talking to us about them (which is great, don't get me wrong), so it seems like you're ready to stop internalizing it and maybe even get some input. But you'd be best-served getting it from people who can help you understand where it is stemming from, why it is manifesting in the way it is, and what you can do to cope, or incite change, etc. It seems to me like you have a misguided understanding of what therapy is about. It's not to "fix" you, or because you're crazy and need to be kept in control, or because there's "something wrong". Know what therapy is best for? Let me quote you: effective strategies for overcoming (or at least coping... not everything can be overcome).

Just the tiniest dip into our Fluid levels throws our bodies for major, major loops. Mild dehydration" is only classified as 1% - 2% of your body's total Water volume. That's how little of an amout we're talking about. Lose more than about 12% and you're not going to be around much longer. Ok, I know is this is a wiki article and they're worth their (zero) weight, but this one is actually accurate: Mild dehydration..

Hmm... I had a bad gag reflex before with that stuff, but I've not noticed it getting worse. If I hold sonething in my mouth (like a PEN, you pervs) and don't think about it, I'm fine. As soon as I think about it I will gag. I gag brushing my teeth if I don't keep adding in Water to keep the toothpaste foam thinned. I can't even think about brushing my tongue. Maybe the tip of it, if I stick my tongue out of my mouth. I gag if I see a "loogey" on the ground, or if I see someone spit. Even the dentists's little saliva sucker thing can make me gag if I let myself really notice it's there. One thing you migh find has an affect is the way mucus drains. Lots of drainage can bother regular stomachs, and ours are definitely no longer normal. I haven't had a cold yet, but it'll be interesting to see how the drainage is managed.
