  1. Another argument I've never understood. Children should be born, or exist, or whatever you want to call it because you never know, one of them might change the world? Yeah, sure, that's true for everyone born. This includes people like MLK, and Einstein, and Watson & Crick. And it also includes people like Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao Tse-tung and Idi Amin.
  2. What about instead of a limitation of the number of kids someone can have, certain criteria for having them? E.g. level of income per child. Not saying I'm for or against, but I see the conversation going toward "limiting"... rather than perhaps "qualifying" - and am curious to see what you guys think.

    Random pictures, just because

Meaning to bring in a CD of work today, I accidentally grabbed a backup CD of pictures. So instead of having something to work on, I have lots of things to look at. 1. So I was enjoying the weather on the deck this summer, and noticed a pretty white flower on my patio tomatoes. I didn't think tomato plants had white flowers, so I went for a closer look and instead of a flower, found a caterpillar covered with wasp eggs. 2. Every odd year a little Kansas town named Lindsborg holds Hylningsfest ("Swedish Honor Festival"), and every year since he moved here in 1997 DH and I go, because it gives him a little taste of his home. Actually, it kind of crams it down his throat, and anyone there from Sweden can tell you - it's WAY more Swedish that Sweden ever is. Anyway, I saw this during the walk from the car to the street where the parade was. Do you think it's cheaper if you get it without the owner? 3. Pulled this out of my fortune cookie. Wtf? 4. If Elvis can be found in a potato, and Donald Duck in a piece of Chex Cereal, can't Jesus be on my cream puff? (A lady in the restaurant overheard us laughing about this, came over, and ended up offering me $100 for it). 5. Just a butterfly. There, that took a few minutes. Now what to do...

    Steak

No, not one bit. I can still eat it, I've just chosen not to. Takes too long to chew, it's just not worth it. Now that I haven't eaten it in about a year, it doesn't even appeal to me. Esp. when I look at the calories.

    Lab band and travelling

BTW, you didn't mention when your surgery is or was, so I'm not sure how much time "so close" is referring to.

    Lab band and travelling

I travel all the time. My first out of state trip was about a month and a half after my surgery and I had no problems at all. My first trip, period, after surgery was a day and a half after, and we drove about 2 hours to visit some family.
  7. *childless heathen* (for now) I know it's a cliche, but I truly will never understand why anyone can have a child, but you need a license to drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish.

    Random pictures, just because

My husband jokingly said Jesus, because we'd just seen an episode of Miami Ink where some lady has a grilled cheese sandwich with the image of (who was it - Mother Theresa? Can't remember) burned into the bread, and was having the sandwiched tattooed on her boob. I thought it looked like a skull, but I can see Bob Marley. For sure. Maybe a little Dee Snyder.

    Where is my port?

The largest incision, and the only one that hurt for me. About 1.5" below my bra, slightly to the right. I couldn't feel it for a long time, and then tried and - yep, that's it! Felt like a button pretty deep under the skin, had to push a bit to feel it. But now I can't feel it at all.

    slipped band

Are you sure those are the only two possibilities? I'd love to see the documentation on this, because things like vomitting and coughing have also been cited - by surgeons - as causes. So have things like failure of the silicone's integrity, as in the case of a friend who was banded in 2001.

    Why not admit to surgery...

If someone really wants to know, all they have to do is ask themselves, "So what?" The answer is there. People might say this or think that. So what? Often the answer looks something like, "I would be a failure" or "I would be emabrassed" or "I would have low self worth", etc. "Why are you crying?" "Because Sally made fun of me." "So what? What does that mean to you?" "It means she doesn't accept me". "I really want to ask this girl out but I can't." "Why?" "Because she might say no." "So what? What would that mean to you?" "It would mean I'm not good enough, or that I would have to deal with rejection." Bingo.

Weight Lost - Constant Topic of Conversation

A co-worker of mine looked like she was losing weight, but I didn't say anything because I didn't want her to take it the wrong way. "I do? I look like I've lost weight? Does that mean I looked fat before?" Telly, my guess is that one is just pretty clueless, and the other probably felt akward seeing your success. I have "that one lady" at work, the one who constantly looks at my body, watches what I eat, makes comments with questionable intentions, etc. 5 years from now I probably won't even remember her name, so guess how much her actions matter to me. People say, "Hi skinny!" to me - which bugs the crap out of me. All that does is bring the harsh reality of how far from "skinny" I still am. A girl who sits next to me at work recently returned from an extended leave and her first words to me were, "You're small!" Uh -- not yet I'm not. But I know that's not how they mean it, it's just how I take it.

Self Payers- any problems later on?

I'm interested - those who couldn't get their insurance companies to pay for compliocations, what was their reasoning?

    Anyway to prevent sagging skin???

All IMO. There are lots of things that might contribute in their own way, but once something is stretched out, it's pretty much stretched out. Exercise itself may help indirectly by promoting better blood flow, etc. but in and of itself it isn't going to tighten up the skin. What it CAN do is add msucle bulk under the skin, which would then help take up some of the slack and make the skin appear tighter. The most prominent factors are going to be your age, the natural tendency of your skin (genetics), the extent to which your skin was stretched, and the duration. Also, how quickly the skin was stretched. Younger people (and I'm talking 16, 18...) have a better chance of their skin tightening up. Certain skins are more prone to scarring and lower elasticity than others. Skin that was minimally stretched out goes back than skin that was extremely stretched out, e.g. you hear a lot about tummy tucks, but you don't hear too much about ankle tucks. And skin that was stretched for wsay 9 months can snap back a lot more frequently than skin that was repeatedly stretched, or stretched for long periods of time. Lots of other factors, too. But as I think of it (for myself) - unless you're 17, or just really lucky, you're going to have some droop.

N/P, just be patient, will be a few days before I can make it to the post office. But I promise, they're cute and so totally worth the wait.

    Eating disorders....

    1. Does anyone feel they have traided in one eating disorder for another? (like we use to eat our feelings now we starve them?) No, and this probably isn't a terribly common thing to happen, but hopping addictions would be extremely common, and could also be one of the things happening in your example above. E.g. the person is addicted to food, but can no longer eat, so they they trade their addiction to food for an addiction to exercise, or smoking, or whatever. So I don't think it's really changing eating disorders, so much as hopping addictions. 2. Does anyone chew there food and spit it out? All the time, because if I'm chewing it and realize it's not going to chew up nicely, there's no way in heck I'm going to just swallow it to swallow it and get stuck. Did that just last night with some sesame chicken that ended up being a little more tough than I thought it was. I mean - what else are you going to do? 3. Does anyone feel like a bulimic? No. Bulemia is characterized by binge eating and purging. Taking laxatives to try and empty your intensitines - that's purging. Sticking a toothbrush down your throat to vomit up the food you ate - that's purging. PBing something that's stuck is not purging.

    Weird!!

Never good to induce vomitting. If you are nauseated, call your doctor and ask for a liquid anti-nausea/anti-emitic. A tsp of anti-emitic isn't going to cause damage, vomitting can.

    Newbie?

Yes, you are - and welcome. BTW, you must think a LOT of doctors post here. Actually, what you're seeing is people listing who their surgeon was. E.g. beversman was banded by Dr. Trace Curry. That might help us seem like a little more connected crowd. :Banane17:

    Weird Port Pain

You know - no - but I do have port pain with some movements. And some intimate positions have had to be ruled out b/c my port just can't take it.

    Cushing's in the news

VQ, kudos to you for not only fighting through your personal challenges, but also for surpassing them and becoming such an advocate and spokesperson for the condition. Many people would have allowed themselves to be beaten down by their struggles, but you have used yours to spread awareness and information. Keep being strong.

    Hello from Kansas!

Hi Eric, and welcome. Several of us in the KS/MO area have found a little home away from home in the forum for Kansas. Pop over and say hi.

    Any Regrets

Do you really think that's what I meant? This discussion changes nothing. The nastiness ends right now, or the thread is locked.
  25. It's christ you're celebrating, to others it is not. The great thing about America, unlike Iraq, is that - it's ok. Add about $700 to our holiday shopping, we just adopted a family of 5 from a local shelter. (DH, parents and I do it every year, but had missed the sponsorship deadline this year... but surprise surprise, we called and they made accomodations )
