Weight loss is fairly similar with sleeve and RNY (don't know about the MGB). You can do a search on pubmed yourself regarding regain rates. Yes, a lot of patients gain at least part of the weight back within the first years. Unfortunately there are usually quite high drop out rates when it comes to studies so nobody knows what's up with these patients. One could assume that everything is fine and dandy and therefore they don't want to bother anymore. Another assumption would be that they don't want to be scolded because of regain and don't make follow up appointments because of this reason. Maybe drop out rates are evenly distributed between the two groups, maybe not. On WLS boards the selection bias is way too high to draw a conclusion, plus there usually aren't that much "long timers". If you're out two or three years and still posting - that's already a long time when it comes to being active on a board but it's a really short time when it comes to lifelong maintenance of the weight loss.

I doubt that since all of these TDEE calculators and resting metabolism calculators neither take body fat/lean body mass ratio into the equation nor interpersonal differences aside from gender and maybe age. For obese individuals these calculator usually spit out values that are overestimating energy expenditure since body fat to LBM ratio is usually different than in a normal weight individual. -

Bull crap? You know what bull crap is? The amount of calories burnt your tracker shows on the display at the end of your workout and unless you really had your resting metabolism rate tested and know how many calories you're burning at rest, everything about your daily deficit is guesswork. -

They simply don't have this kind of deficit, even though if they sometimes might think they have. To have a 3000 kcal deficit a day one must have a really high TDEE. People usually have much smaller deficits than this and therefore of course don't lose 7 lbs a week. Even if one is eating only 500 kcal a day that means a TDEE of 3500 kcal minimum a day and we're usually not talking about the 186 cm tall, 25 year old very active male on this board. Most people overestimate the amount of calories they're burning and underestimate the amount of energy they're consuming. Even if people are "measuring everything" - how do people measure? Cups and spoons or gram? -

I can understand not wanting to jump through all of these silly insurance hoops and feeling like a piece of meat that's inspected by some stranger. I will for sure try to get at least partial coverage but that "6 month of stable weight" alone means at least another year of waiting for me in the end. And I have crazy loose skin on the front of my body... and also some lumps of fat on my upper inner thighs that really look out of proportion there. I wish the rest of my body would look as defined as my back. 😞 -

ROFL. I guess I will be a self-pay, too. I guess it's not "enough" loose skin for insurance to pay (ok, I won't exclude being lucky so lets wait and see, I'm financially prepared already for the worst case though). I'm looking into the Avelar technique and would have to go to Austria then but I essentially cancelled all the thoughts about plastics (well, almost all thoughts...) when surgeons recommended a revision and told me to expect another 10% weight loss. 6.something kg doesn't sound that much but at a height of 167 cm it means more than two BMI points. However, I can have a mommy makeover myself then when the time comes around. Surgeons in Germany usually don't do breasts and tummy in one sitting when insurance covers the procedures because of how hospital stays are paid. (Germany's health care system is sick in its own special way.) ETA: Yes, gotta see the bright site of being a self-pay. One can get what's medically safe and not what some insurance company thinks they're going to pay for. -
Ummmmm... How many people on here are complaining about potty issues again?

I have to do my anastomosis revision and hiatoplastic/gastropexia first I guess. 😔 Surgeon said that patients can have an additional 10% weight loss after this. So I definitely don't want to rush the plastics stuff. -

Self-pay, Green? -
I use Emsa, Lock & Lock, Tupperware. Emsa has great containers in which you can make a casserole in the glass bottom in your oven and then cover and refrigerate/freeze it once you put the plastic cover on top of it. The container can also be used in the microwave. It's also dishwasher safe.

That's why it's vital to develop a lifestyle you can maintain forever and be happy with because when you try to maintain a lifestyle you're not happy with you'll take any opportunity/excuse to ditch it (people usually refer to this as "and then life happened").

One year plus- Could you eat a whole PB&J sandwich?
summerset replied to jasmineinmymind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No idea how big sandwiches in your country are (serious question, portion sizes including bread slice sizes seem to vera a lot)? However, one sandwich wouldn't usually be a problem. How big the portion size is I eat and feel comfortable depends on a lot of things. What food is it? Time of day? Activity level on this particular day or the day before? Stress level? (Sometimes I think the moon phases could play a role as well, lol.) There is no rule for this. It varies a lot from person to person. Since Dr. Weiner's video on portion sizes increasing with time wasn't posted so far, here it is (the "progression plate" is displayed at 1:30 min into the video): -
If it's really a problem of the muscle tissue look for these little balls you can treat your sore spots with yourself.

Binge/purge behavior ("exercise bulimia"). -
The only thing I prepare and freeze is cooked rice. However, I use frozen already cut vegetables and fruits. Unfortunately not everything freezes well.

People either don't trust their team enough because there are so many different protocols out there and they wonder if their treatment team really offer "the best plan" or they compare themselves to other patients and then start questioning their own plan because it kinda seems to work but not good/fast enough compared to other patients. Or they can't cope with their plan mid/long term and are looking for alternatives. I think all of this is understandable. There is so much/too much information out there. Paralysis by analysis and/or getting in a panic about doing everything 110% right to guarantee success is unfortunately not uncommon. -

The No Excuses Support Thread
summerset replied to Fatboyslim1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
"How many calories" - first thing to get right. "What kind of calories" - the fine tuning stuff. People can't lose weight 1) fast enough and 2) seem to be in a panic in regards of getting everything 110% perfect from the start. So there are too many people starting to fine tune the stuff without having figured out how far the basics are getting them. Some start their weight loss attempt/journey with firing the whole broadside on their fat without taking into the equation that it might be smart to keep some bullets in the arsenal to fire off later when things are slowing down and/or there are these last 10 kg that don't want to come off. So maybe thinking about that insulin index or spie or glycemic index or spike or the thermogenesis effect of different macronutrients is not really necessary as long as weight loss happens without worrying about this stuff. There will be time to worry about this later. Promised. This "fine tuning" is way worse on bodybuilding and/or fitness boards though, btw. "OMGZ, have to start with 6 days a week, 2 times a day going to the gym doing a split program, eating only protein and taking a 1000 supplements in the right order at the right time. If not, no gAinZ, bro!!" (But don't worry, we aren't that far behind, lol.) -
Me neither. But it's a charming notion that my erratic eating patterns might be finally good for something. 😂
