Some of the pros and cons depend on your medical issues. For example, diabetes and GERD/Barrett's Esophagus would often be factors leaning towards the gastric bypass while Crohn's disease or severe arthritis might be factors against. The sleeve has the advantage of usually not causing dumping and avoiding malabsorption but it can cause severe acid reflex. Current substance abuse would indicate neither surgery should be used. There are many good books on weight loss surgery so I would recommend reading a few as well as searching for old threads on this site about bypass versus sleeve. Above all ask your surgeon lots of questions such as how many of each type of surgery he/she has done and about which factors indicate gastric bypass and which factors indicate the sleeve. Good luck with your decision and welcome! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Good luck everyone! I am supposed to start my liver shrinking diet June 1 but am planning on starting a few days early to make up for some food funerals. I'm having real fears about being able to do this (give up the food). I was doing really well on the medically supervised diet until recently. My surgeon allows coffee but am thinking maybe I should cut it out. Anyway, after researching and waiting for so long now that it's almost here it seems unreal. I have been wishing I could find an OA group for people with wls. Is there such a thing? It's been a while since I attended an OA meeting but I don't remember ever hearing anyone mention having had surgery. Most of the recovery I saw was emotional/spiritual. I did not see a lot of long term weight loss. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Where are all the 50 something bypass patients?
j16 replied to choosehope's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi. Sorry for the delay but I just got back from vacation. I am scheduled for RNY on June 22. They found Barrett's cells so my doc won't do the sleeve. My bypass has been approved but am still waiting for insurance approval on repairing a small hiatal hernia. I start my liver shrinking diet on June 1. Its starting to get real! -
Thanks for all the responses! It sounds like I can start a lot earlier than I was expecting!

If you weren't obese "all" of your life, what is it that caused you to become obese ?
j16 replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was about 15 pounds overweight by the time I graduated from high school and 50 by the time I graduated from college. I then lost all my excess weight in my twenties and could eat whatever I wanted. This ended when I got pregnant and quit smoking. I had put on 90 extra pounds after the birth of my first child. I added an additional 25 pounds with my 2nd child, 5 with my 3rd and an additional 30 with menopause. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Yes I have already read that and agree it is an excellent post with very helpful information. I am trying to figure out when it would be safe for me to start adding running to my walking routine at my age, weight, and out of shape condition. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Second guessing choice for sleeve
j16 replied to mom2wils's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was hoping to have a sleeve. I had been on omeprazole but had no symptoms and in fact went off for a month with no symptoms. My surgeon had me do an endoscopy and barium swallow test which showed no damage and then a manometry and Bravo Ph capsule test which showed Barrett's esophagus. My surgeon now will only do RNY for me. If you have not had all four of these tests you might consider having them to make sure you don't have Barrett's before you go with the sleeve since it has the risk of making acid reflux worse. If you have no damage then the sleeve may be a better option for you. It's a very personal choice since the pros and cons of each type of surgery are weighted differently by each of us. Maybe I'm just burnt out from all the research or frustrated with all the waiting (my insurance requirements were met in mid- Feb and I'm still waiting) but I'm really feeling down. I'm struggling to get going with an exercise program and sticking to a low carb diet and am afraid I will gain back everything I've lost if they don't put me on the pre-op diet soon (it was postponed until we can set a date for surgery). Then again maybe I just love food too much and am scared of losing it. Is this normal to feel this way? I hear/read about people who are so excited to have surgery. That's not me. I'm dreading some of the possible complications/outcomes even though I know it's my best chance for a healthier, happier life. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My surgeon and Nut said coffee was fine but I had already switched to decaf thinking I would have to. I'm planning on staying off coffee for now. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
