Afrikanaaa replied to HealthyRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor says stop fluids 30 minutes before, 45 minutes after. -

At what point did you begin using straws again?!
Afrikanaaa replied to cal2okl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
They gave me a straw for my Protein drink while I was in the hospital. I was shocked! Lol... ???? I think the "no straw" thing is just one of those things where it depends on your surgeon and their protocols. -
Over 6 feet with a high BMI?
Afrikanaaa replied to christopherM's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 6'1 and think you can do it! Us tallies store weight in the darnedest places, and if your BMI is higher, 100 in 3 months is definitely possible. Just stay focused. -
Puréed stage diet question/help
Afrikanaaa replied to TodayItEnds's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm doing purées right now too, Greek yogurt, mashed potatoes, Popsicles and lentil Soup have been my staples. I tried a 1/2 scrambled egg today. And couldn't even finish that. But can finish one of those light & fit 4 oz yogurts in 30ish minutes. It's weird. -
When did you start exercising?
Afrikanaaa replied to reesecup2626's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
My doctor actually released me with no restrictions. His recommendation was 1 mile to 3 1/2 miles every day. Lift weights within moderation (listen to your body) At the hospital was walking as soon as I was awake. Next day did the same thing. I took my first day off when I got home from the hospital, but have been in the gym walking and taking Zumba ever since. -
Anyone with food intake issues and nausea after Sleeve surgery?
Afrikanaaa replied to dlucia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 12 days out and have been nauseous just about every day and it would get really bad when I would go to lay down. I called my nutritionist and she recommended papaya enzyme. She said it helps trigger peristalsis (the digestive movement of fluids down your throat to your stomach and beyond). And I've been using it for 2 days now before I lay down and it's been helping me. -
The second one for sure!

Tomorrow is the day, I'm really nervous, and so hopeful!
Afrikanaaa replied to Kiwisleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's definitely normal to feel nervous and scared leading up to it, but everything will be alright! You can do it! -
HELLO JANUARY SLEEVERS!
Afrikanaaa replied to IrishGermanRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@SactoWendy! I know how you feel! My doctor gave me the green light to progress as comfortable (from liquid to mushies to crispies to regular), and I'm just 12 days out. Tried half a scrambled egg today. I got full before half of the half portion was gone. Which is so crazy to me because I can finish a 4oz yogurt in like 30min but couldn't finish the eggs (which I measured out at 1T/ half an ounce). -
Shortning Stages
Afrikanaaa replied to Jan11 sleever's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went to my first post-op visit today (10 days out) and my doctor said I could progress from full liquids to soft/purées. The original document says that I was supposed to be on full liquids for 2 weeks but looking at this thread let me know that I shouldn't be too apprehensive to follow their suggested advancement. -
Not sure if it goes on anywhere else, but in Los Angeles there's a heath trend called Vitamin Therapy where you can get Vitamins through an IV. I know what the research says about it, but has anyone tried it?

Tall Women, Tell Me Your Story!
Afrikanaaa replied to AshleyMidwife's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hi! I'm tall. ???? I'm 6'1. 25 years old. Highest weight: 322 (in November). Pre-surgery: 319. Day of surgery: 314. Currently (9 days out): 298. My surgeon's goal weight for me is 200. My primary care's goal is 210. I don't remember ever being in the 100's. I was 200 lbs in middle school. And even when I played basketball in college I was a firm (very muscular) 220. -
Become a vegetarian maybe?
Afrikanaaa replied to nomorechubbybutt63's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a vegan, and have been for 2+ years, and haven't had dairy for even longer than that. Going into surgery my nutritionist advised that I'd probably have to use whey sources for Protein because there's no other way I'd be able to get the adequate amount of without exceeding my liquid goal but my body still isn't used to it. Although it's been a little over 3 weeks (pre & post-op), my body is fighting the whey. ???? And post-op I'll definitely have to go veggie for protein. -
Anyone in their younger 20s?
Afrikanaaa replied to losewithrae's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I just turned 25 at the beginning of the month. I got sleeved on 1/15. I'm 6'1. Highest weight: 322 (in November). Pre-surgery: 319. Day of surgery: 314. Currently (9 days out): 298. -
Post op day two, help
Afrikanaaa replied to jessmarie0122's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Fluids are tough to get in...esp Protein. But once you get them in, it keeps your BP and temperature down. You can do it! Just focus on what you can stomach. For me Popsicles and apple juice are everything. Day 2 before being discharged from the hospital my nutritionist advised that my goal was 48-64oz a day, and that the closer to 64 I can get, the better. @@cindyw41 - I got my sleeve done on the 15th and started my period about 48-hours before surgery, and now on day 9 it's still going. It sucks! But super glad to know I'm not the only one. -
Drinks that are not carbonated?
Afrikanaaa replied to m.sexton's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 8 days post op and organic coconut water has been a lifesaver because regular water has been making me feel really really nauseous. I dilute it down to 1/3 coconut water, 2/3 water. -
I got my period 2 nights before surgery, and I am still on it (8 days post-op). I am cramping really bad, and am scared this will never end. I am still on my full Fluid diet, aside from additional carbs, any other tips for coping?

January or February 2016 Sleevers?
Afrikanaaa replied to songsmith's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Aw you had yours on my bday ☺️ are you not able to drink so much or simply not being able to sip it without the urge to gulp is the hard part? Happy belated birthday!!! And gulping isn't the issue, it's remembering to drink the liquids and allowing myself enough time to complete the meal. Pre-op I was grab and go, and now I have to sit down and give myself time for things to go down. It's a weird concept. -
January or February 2016 Sleevers?
Afrikanaaa replied to songsmith's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was 1/15 and getting in all my ounces and water is tough! Some days it's easy other days I feel nauseous and don't want to drink a thing. I haven't felt hungry at all (ever) since surgery. However I have some serious cramping going on that kicks at the worst of times. Thankfully the post-surgery soreness is gone now (for the most part). -

I'm 4 days out and struggling to consume the right amount of water. And being this dehydrated is making my blood pressure and heart rate go up. Any tips to getting in fluids?I couldn't stand drinking water post-op. I got fluids from broth (20-40ml at a time), ice blocks and crushed ice. Will try. Thank you!

Question for those who've chosen not to share their WLS
Afrikanaaa replied to CHM's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My family is similar to your husband's family, so when choosing and getting my sleeve done, I kept it between me and my mom. I'm avoiding family gatherings until I'm further along in my weight loss, and my mom has advised that she will deflect the pushy family members who may press me to over eat or about it, down the line.
