Getting my sh*t together!
Mary2016 replied to SleeveMeAlone214's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have been struggling as well....8 1/2 months out of the sleeve. I don't think I am hungry, just grazing. Trying to curb the nighttime snacking, I go upstairs away from the kitchen....out of sight, out of mind. However, not getting the significant other support. "I understand, but...." doesn't work. Being angry at me for having to get away from food, doesn't help. No one can truly understand this addiction I have to food. I am not being dramatic. If I sit in the family room, next to the kitchen, I think FOOD, FOOD, FOOD. Battling this battle, don't feel like battling people too!!!!! So frustrated, angry, tired....... I will not give up!!! -
Almost 2 years out and gaining
Mary2016 replied to chase888's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery 6/22/16 and I am grazing as well, and not with good food. I agree, go for the protein. For me, I am not hungry, but if I sit in my family room, especially after dinner, I will eat. So, around 7pm I head upstairs to watch TV, read, etc. Problem is with my significant other, who does not understand why, and feels I am all about myself. Honestly......YES I AM!! I had a major freaking surgery to get this under control, and you want me to sit and watch TV with you, meanwhile munching away. I can't do it!!! So upset, but not willing to budge. I have about 14 more lbs I want to lose, have been the same up and down 2-3 lbs for about 3 months. I don't want to gain. HELP!!! -
I am 54. Hadn't had a period in 8 months. Have had it twice since surgery 2 1/2 months ago. Hoping it goes away soon.

I don't seem to be losing very much...
Mary2016 replied to bini120's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Me too. Just about 6 weeks and 16 pounds down. A bit disappointing. -
I agree with Miss Kim. I joined a Facebook page. Currently half of us are fresh postop and half going in the next month. Incredible support. If you can't find one then start one of your own. Good luck.

Yes, I felt it. When I got within days of my surgery I started thinking that they are removing most of my stomach. And first day post op I was thinking about it as well. But what's done is done. 3rd day post op and humming along.

Pre-op liquid only
Mary2016 replied to sunshine 75's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day 5 of my preop diet. I get to have one meal per day.....3-4 oz of lean Protein, unlimited veg, 1/4 cup carb (say what???). This is my first week, and I have to say, I am following it, but being a bit liberal. I have been HUNGRY!!! One night I ate about 5 or 6 ounces of ground lean turkey. And last night I had steak, not sure that steak is really lean, but it was a lean cut. Tonight I will have turkey sausage, again, not the leanest of meats. I figure week 2 I will stick to chicken/fish, and other truly lean meats. But I also need to go out to dinner for my daughter's graduation, and throw a party for 40-45 people at my house, of which only my kids and partner, and one sister know I am having surgery 4 days after the party. LOL.....should be quite an adventure. Hang in there everyone!!! -
Day three calories and protein
Mary2016 replied to P7rancher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Aren't you still on clears? Maybe you are advance already to full liquids. -
I caved and now I'm worried
Mary2016 replied to Charlie Brown's Momma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand. I am in the preop diet phase, and boy, I feel like there is a mirror in front of me highlighting all my securities/dependencies on food. I have a healthy family, my kids are athletes (adopted, so no genetic predisposition from me for obesity) and my partner has always been athletic and fit. But, our social activities, family gatherings, comfort, support, etc.....do have a food connection. Its hard, the mental stuff. When I am stressed, I want carbs. Its hard to find another way, but it is necessary for my own health and well being. Sounds like you were sabotaging yourself and not even really aware of it. Pull it back, take control. You can do it. Its a lifestyle change, not just a diet. But, I really feel for you and I get it. -
I start my liquid diet (3 shakes and then one meal - 4 oz protein/ veg/ and like a joke of a carb serving) on Weds 6/8. 6/15 my daughter graduates high school. I think that Friday 6/17 we will go out to dinner!!! and then 6/18 I am throwing her a party with about 40-50 people......chicken parm, sausage and peppers, apps, sangria, cake......UGH!!! And only one of my siblings knows I am going for surgery on June 22, 4 days after the party. So, I know I need to be strict, its gonna be a killer. Hopefully no one will notice I am not eating. I just need to stay busy.

How did you know it was right for you?
Mary2016 replied to Quinzel.MD's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are days when I still say.....am I really doing this? I never thought I would....especially when I lost 160 lbs on weight watchers. But slowly, 100 lbs crept back on. At this point, I have serious orthopedic issues, and I don't want to wait for the diabetic, hypertension, heart, cancer, etc....all of those things that obesity increases your risk for. I went to see a bariatric physician for the first time last fall. I am 54 years old and have been overweight since I was 7 or 8 years old. I was going on a liquid diet through her practice and it was so darn hard, I was HUNGRY!!! I told her if this didn't work I was going to have to consider bariatric surgery. She listened to me, and then said, "I don't want you to consider having bariatric surgery as a failure. Obesity is recognized as a disease. You need to treat it in a way that works for you". I started the preop process unsure, and now I continue 90% sure its the right thing for me....its a little scary (and I am an RN for 32 years, so imagine my thoughts at times). But surgery is June 22......and here I go. Looking forward to another try at being successful and believing this time is the charm!! Good luck to all!!! -
Does anyone's goal weight still leave them "overweight" or "obese"?
Mary2016 replied to provenzee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In the past, I lost 160 pounds on weight watchers and regained 100. My lowest weight was 137 lbs at 5 ft 4 inches. When I look at pictures I was fit, but saggy skin. I felt good, but every time I got out of bed, my vision would black out for a brief 1-2 seconds, never blacked out....hit many a wall though. I don't have to be 137 lbs. My goal is between 165-175. I just want to be comfortable. My arthritis is killing me. Actually, one of my biggest fears is that I won't be able to stop losing weight. I never had a true goal with weight watchers either, just wanted to be healthier. And I was....for a while. You decide your goal. Nobody knows your body like you do. -
Coffee after Sleeve...
Mary2016 replied to NikkiRT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
coffee doesn't officially dehydrate, but due to caffeine's diuretic effect, it doesn't hydrate you as well as Water. You would have to increase your Fluid intake if you are drinking caffeinated beverages. Headaches can be due to dehydration AND caffeine withdrawal. I don't know why the theory would be if you are not drinking your coffee you are not drinking at all. But anyhow....I plan to wean off the caffeine preop and eventually go back on. Coffee isn't the best choice. -
Coffee after Sleeve...
Mary2016 replied to NikkiRT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get headaches as well without having coffee. But I think it is usually due to the lack of caffeine. I LOVE my coffee. However, one of the biggest complications from bariatric surgery is dehydration, which caffeinated beverages are not a help. So....my plan is to go decaf at least for 1/2 my coffee 2 weeks prior, then all decaf for the week prior to surgery. And slowly add back in decaf coffee after surgery until I can get in all my liquids....then back to regular coffee slowly. I have no intention of staying off of it forever. Have I mentioned...i LOVE my coffee. Good luck. -
Mine is June 22nd. I am getting a bit apprehensive. Tonight I went to the preop class. When they went through what the surgery entailed I became a bit anxious. Don't need to know all of that. Just tell me what to do preop and postop. 29 days and counting.....

My surgeon said 6 weeks for a job that requires any physical demand. I actually have a desk job. But it's very stressful with 50+ hours per week. I go home exhausted at the end of the day. I am taking 6 weeks. While I don't really do physical activity, it is listed in my job description that I need to be able to. But I figure the fatigue factor will keep me out more than the 2 weeks if at a desk job. Your job sounds like you need 6 weeks. Lifting and being physically active too soon could lead to incisional hernias months down the road. Be conservative. Take 6 weeks.

It's been such a busy time preparing and I think I am at 7 business days pending. In the middle of finishing everything, I had a family crisis that just had me forget about it. But I need to get this done sooner than later. Work schedule, family obligations....praying it all works out. Would be great to hear by Friday. But who knows.

All preop testing done, insurance approved and date set for June 22nd. I held it off a bit because of my daughter's graduation June 15. So.....Yay me!!!!

You have increased risk of pulmonary compromise postoperative when you have sleep apnea. The pulmonologist went over this with me pre sleep study. My surgeon told me they didn't want an undetected sleep apnea to not be treated and cause complications post op. At the very least I would ask their reasonsing. And then promptly check with your pulmonary physician. Surgeons operate and that is their expertise. Check what they give as reasoning with the physician who manages your Cpap- pulmonary.
