    Feeling like I am regressing

I am about the same length post op. I have been fortunate that everything I've tried seems to sit with me well. No major intolerance. However, I do find myself feeling uncomfortable and gurgly if I eat too fast or don't chew really thoroughly. I ran into that more when I moved to solid foods. I have to really work on reminding myself to go slow, take small bites, and chew. Sent from my SM-J700P using the BariatricPal App
  2. I am about 7 weeks post op VSG. My surgeon cleared me to go back to the gym a couple of weeks ago and I have been sticking to cardio. (30 min, 4 days a week - elliptical, bike, rowing machine). I'm really wanting to start strength training but I'm not sure where to start. How much weight? How many reps? Which machines on what day? Do any of you have suggestions on how to develop a routine? I go to the Y and could pay to work with one of their trainers, but I'm a pretty self-motivated, lone-wolf kind of person and I'd rather do this on my own if possible. Note: I have bad knees, so anything involving lunges or squats is out right now. I hope they will improve as I gain strength.

    extremely dry mouth

I had this problem immediately after surgery and it turned out it was a side effect caused by one of the anti- nausea meds they gave me in the hospital. After I stopped the meds, no more dry mouth. You might ask your Dr. about it. Sent from my SM-J700P using the BariatricPal App

    Strenth training for a beginner

Oh, I meant to mention it - properly performed squats are good for the knees If you can, go to the library and look for a book called Starting Strength. I'm not telling you to do that routine (it's brutal) but there is a chapter on the squat that discusses how the posterior chain is involved in the squat as well as how when the bar path is vertical and your stance is proper, the knees are protected. So even if you start with nothing but a broomstick (like I did), squatting would be a very good idea. Thanks! I definitely have a lot to learn. Sent from my SM-J700P using the BariatricPal App

    Certain Smells

Smells haven't made me nauseous, but they definitely seem stronger than pre-op. It's like my sense of smell was sharpened somehow. Sent from my SM-J700P using the BariatricPal App

    Please I need encouragement

I'm in the same boat! I am about 5 weeks out, lost 18 lbs and then I've stalled for the past week and a half! It's been so frustrating. I'm trying to just embrace it, keep following the plan, and not worry...but it's easier said than done! I did take measurements and noticed some losses there, so that's good. But hey, I'm still at the lowest I've been at since at least 2007. Focus on the positive!! Sent from my SM-J700P using the BariatricPal App

    Sizes clearly mean nothing

I'm down about 39 lbs and I'm just now on the border of wearing a smaller size. 24>22. My mother in law said "40 lbs! You must have dropped a couple sizes by now!" I had to explain that at a certain size, you have to lose a lot to change sizes. She wears an 8/10 so 40 lbs would have been a much bigger change for her. Is it normal to get cold feet?

Totally normal to feel nervous about a major life change. I felt the same way about a month prior to surgery. Everything has gone smoothly for me so far! No regrets. Sent from my LGLS740 using the BariatricPal App
  10. I had surgery 8-11. The pain in my left shoulder is killing me! They sent me home with Oxy, which worked for about a day but now doesn't seem to help. Would ice packs or heating pad be a better treatment? I just want to be able to sleep through the night tonight without pain. Sent from my LGLS740 using the BariatricPal App

Shoulder pain - ice or heat?

I ended up sticking with ice packs because we're having a heatwave in Seattle and I can't bear the thought of a heating pad right now! It's slowly getting better day by day. The first few days post-op I think I was letting too much time pass between doses of pain meds. I started doing them every 4 hrs as prescribed and they've been more effective. I've been trying to walk more too. Sent from my LGLS740 using the BariatricPal App

Shoulder pain - ice or heat?

I have been trying ice but I think I'll switch today and see how heat compares. Eyes on the prize! Sent from my LGLS740 using the BariatricPal App

    When will i feel better..

You are further out than me so I can't really offer advice, but I will commiserate! I was really nauseous the first couple days. I had awful cotton mouth that was making me gag on everything. Turns out it was the anti-nausea meds (zofran) causing it. When I stopped those the nausea decreased immensely. I just keep telling myself this all will pass. A few months from now we'll look back and this will be a distant memory! Sent from my LGLS740 using the BariatricPal App

    Call the waaaambulance!

I hear ya. The main thing that confirmed my decision for surgery is my knee pain. On the bright side, you're on the right path to get where you want to be, and even though it will take time to get there, it will be so rewarding ! Sent from my LGLS740 using the BariatricPal App

  22. I started my 2 week pre-op diet a few days ago. My program's pre-op diet isn't as strict as some I've seen on here, but it is mostly Protein drinks and is only about 700 to 800 calories a day. I had been working out for 30 min most days prior to starting, but now my energy level has completely tanked. I don't want to use this as an excuse to skip the gym, but I also don't want to burn myself out. I still have so much to do in the next week and a half before surgery! I'm worried about what my energy level is going to be like post-op. Of course eventually I'll at least be able to have some caffeine again. Did you or are you working out on your pre-op diet? Are you exhausted? Sent from my Nexus 10 using the BariatricPal App

    Alcohol Addiction

I don't want to derail this very important thread, but as someone who works in healthcare/insurance I can assure you that federal privacy laws against sharing medical information to employers are very real and very strict. Putting information in electronic record systems to be shared between practitioners (with patient consent) does not mean it is open to just anyone. It makes me really sad that someone would scare others away from getting professional help for a very serious and life-threatening medical issue. Edited to be less of a b.
  25. Have you heard anything about changes to the postop diet? I was on the GHC bariatric facebook group and one of the women said they now want us to do the full liquid phase for 4 weeks after surgery instead of 2 weeks. She said the NUT told her at her post op appt that they just changed it. I hope that isn't true. Sent from my LGLS740 using the BariatricPal App
