haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate
Samara1974 replied to rmarion's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I agree with the documentation approach, also if you have a smart phone you can record her comments as well so you can capture the tone of the comments. Also I am sorry you have to deal with that. it must be a bummer for someone to trying to squash your high. You are going to do great so try to ignore her if you can. -
Alcohol and drugs after surgery
Samara1974 replied to jmc534's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would be honest with your surgeon and ask them these questions. I know they have you quit smoking because it delays the healing process after surgery & can cause ulcers. I am not sure if marijuana has the same effect though but they would know. The other concerns I've read from other posters was the munchies sidetracking weight loss. Most doctors for drinking suggest 6 months to a year and some say never again. I am three months out and had two sips of a drink and was done not only could I not hold any more liquid physically I was buzzed, so your sleeve may force you to change your habits. There is actually a WLS Magazine article about alcohol on this site I would recommend it, it was a good read. http://www.bariatricpal.com/page/articles.html/_/healthy-living/bariatric-realities-%e2%80%93-medical-professionals%e2%80%99-guidelines-about-alcohol-use-wls-r601 -
Anything I should know?
Samara1974 replied to Janiegirl1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh and you might gain weight right after surgery I gained 5lbs due to being on an IV for 3 days. It goes away quickly thank goodness, that was majorly disappointing. -
Anything I should know?
Samara1974 replied to Janiegirl1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not much pain for me I felt sore like I worked out too hard. Everyone's pain threshold is different though as some folks swear it's the worst pain they ever felt. Two week pre-op diet all liquid diet, I could eat solids (chicken, fish) if I absolutely had to Post-op diet 1 week clear liquids, 1 week full liquids, 1 week mushy food, 1 week semi-solid, then "real" food 60-80gm of Protein, 50gm of carbs or less, 600-800 calories a day. I had a drain it is purely the surgeons choice, it doesn't hurt just feels weird when they pull it. That incision has actually healed the best out of all of them. Things you need to know * Follow your pre-op diet to the letter, my surgery was delayed by two hours because the surgery in front of me had complications due to them not following the instructions. * Walk as soon as you can after surgery * Use gas-x strips to help with gas pain. * During the process it could be before or after you might have the major regret breakdown (mine was before.) This is a major decision and it's stressful, I warned my husband before that it might happen so he was prepared to talk me down when it happened. *You aren't going to feel "normal" for a couple of weeks after surgery, I cried because I was tired of getting shots & taking pills after surgery (week one/two.) *Everything gets better once you are on normal food, just keep telling yourself it is only one more week until you get to the next food stage. You can do anything for one week! *You may be a "lucky" one who can drink normally just because you can doesn't mean you should measure your drinks and liquid food to make sure you don't over do it. -
Musings & Questions - mostly nutrition related
Samara1974 replied to becomingmandikaye's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So weird question are these nutritionists or registered dieticians? After reading these forums and seeing what weird/wrong/horrible advice folks are saying their nutritionist tells them. I did some research anyone with a few classes can be a nutritionist but registered dieticians have to have a 2 or 4 year degree. It seems like some of these folks are quacks, one post said their nutritionist recommended that they drink milkshakes to make up calories etc. I know the story is second hand but it just makes me wonder. I know there are great nutritionists out there that know their stuff it does worry me that there are people that don't know anything giving such bad advice. -
How do I ask my doctor?
Samara1974 replied to ecoreen94's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree 100% with Recycled you tell your PCP about your decision. It is your health and your decision if they do not want to support you then you need to find a PCP that will. I told my PCP and he was a bit shocked (because we had never discussed it and my surgery was the next week) but said ultimately it was my decision. When I got back I followed up with him; 30 some odd pounds down in a month and he told me he felt I made a great decision and plans on helping me lose all my weight during the honeymoon phase. -
I was told the same thing 3-4 oz of food, stop when you feel the restriction. I have a Protein Shake or yogurt or an crustless quiche for breakfast. The recipe is below http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/easy-cheesy-crustless-quiche/

People who want privacy - what is or was your cover story?
Samara1974 replied to Maggie Journey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Reading all your responses I have never been happier working with a group of men Men are gossipy but my guys have been very supportive (I told them after surgery.) I would just say you had hernia surgery (if that is getting repaired) It will be awkward if you have to ask for more time off for another surgery to repair it. Once you start losing weight say you are eating less and exercising more like some of the above posters said after all it's the truth. Hopefully after a month they will give up and move on to some other person to gossip about. -
It depends on what stage you are in. I am in the "normal" food stage and I drink protein shakes or have yogurt or have a crust less breakfast quiche.

Probably normal pain but need reinforcement
Samara1974 replied to snokb04's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would definitely call your doctor especially because it was getting better and now it is getting worse. It could be nothing but if it is something the longer you wait the worse it could get. -
When in doubt I choose Mexican and get fajitas then I can pick out the meat and eat some of the veggies and bypass the rest.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Measure & weigh your food and stick to the portion your doctor prescribed.

You will read this a lot but your tastes are going to change, foods that you used to love (greasy burgers, take out, even some "healthy" foods) may taste weird or off to you. I LOVED sweets pre-surgery and now I can take or leave them. Things with lots of carbs or sugar actually make me sick to my stomach. Due to Ketosis Water tasted sweet after surgery and I had a lot of trouble getting my fluids in luckily this changed and I can now drink water which I loved before surgery.

263 thus wonderful morning! Hope you have a great day

I am almost three months out and I "had" an amaretto sour before brunch the other day. I only drank 1/4 of an inch of the drink and I was snockered and couldn't finish it. For me right now the occasional indulgence is fine, "one" drink is not going to make a huge difference in my weight loss. I also plan and/or make sure I have the calories available for the day if I am going to drink.

How long was your hospital stay?
Samara1974 replied to Andrea Guadiana's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My hospital stay was 3 days, 1 day for surgery, 2 recuperating. I took 2 weeks off (1 week for surgery and then 1 week recuperating.) How much time you take off really depends on your job. I have a desk job in a small office where I don't have to lift or walk very far to get what I need. -

What OTC products do I need to bring with me to Tijuana?
Samara1974 replied to dafurrer's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
For me Gas-X strips, chapstick and extra bandages. When they discharge you, they don't send you home with extra. After your first discharge shower, there is no one but you to replace a bandage if needed. -
So confused! Newbie here..help :/
Samara1974 replied to jaxmama's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
There are affordable self pay Dr.'s in Texas, Mexico and Las Vegas, My recommendation is do your research. For me I knew that I wanted my after surgery are to be hospital based vs a hotel or a recovery center. Do you want post nutrition care through the surgeon/booker or do you want to find your own dietician or nutritionist? Do you need it financed or can you pay all up front? I wanted hospital after care and I can call or email the nutritionist if I need to. I also had to pay up front CC or Cashier's check. I knew all this up front and this is o.k. with me. Like I said you need to know what you want from your experience and then find a surgeon that can meet those expectations otherwise you will not feel good about surgery in another country. My surgery went great and the surgeon, hospital staff and stay was amazing, it was the best decision I've ever made. -
Why didn't I know how bad it's gotten?
Samara1974 replied to kmorri's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Instead of "borrowing" a seat belt extender if your surgery is far away and you travel a lot you can always buy one. http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/B001KVW6EQ They are around $20 or so, depends on what type you buy. I purchased one 2 years ago so i wouldn't have to ask for one anymore. Luckily I don't need it anymore and I will hand it down to my sister. -

Belly Button Lump by incision
Samara1974 replied to Buttercream's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The lumps in my incisions are the disposable stitches. Almost 2 months out and I still have lumps they can last up to 6 months or more depending on the person. I also read, do not rub them if they hurt it can delay your healing process. You should be concerned if the incision has: swelling. increased redness around the wound. pus or bleeding from the wound. the wound feeling warm. an unpleasant smell from the wound. increasing pain. a high temperature (fever) of 38°C (100.4°F) or above. swollen glands. -
Anyone ever thought:"I can do this on my own, I don't need the sugery"
Samara1974 replied to Killian's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am only two months post-op but I definitely had this feeling when I lost 24lbs during the pre-op diet. What made me go through it is the many times I lost 20-30lbs and then put it right back on when I quit the diet. My surgery was the way to stop the yo-yo diet cycle, I am now down 56lbs, have a lot more energy and feel great. Not one regret for me. -
