I hope to have surgery this month. Here's my current worry: you know when you've come off your hike or your bike or from the garden hot and sweaty and thirsty and you grab that cold bottle of water and gulp-gulp-gulp those delicious ice cold mouthfuls of water to quench your desperate thirst? How in the world am I supposed to take little tiny sips of water after VSG? I've been told I'll never have the capacity to guzzle cold water after a workout again? This is so concerning to me! How do you hydrate well after a workout?

What Was Your Final "straw That Broke The Camels Back"
ssguthrie replied to bigjoe102's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
There are lots of "straws" but the final STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMELS BACK? My husband died unexpectedly at the young age of 56. He wasn't sick, no high blood pressure, good blood work that I know of. He had sleep apnea and was overweight, and we always talked about both needing to do something about our weight. But we didn't "do something: quick enough - and he died of a massive heart attack. I am heartbroken at losing him. and I feel panicked that I, too, might miss out on watching my precious granddaughters grow up. They are 2 and 4 years old, and I am determined to get healthier. I need help, though, so am working on approval for the sleeve. This has been a good thread; thanks for posting that question, and for all the responses. I am inspired, and encouraged about my decision. -

wow, 2 years out? You've lost a lot of weight, and you look great. encouraging...... -
I am pursuing the path of Gastric Sleeve weight loss surgery. I went to two bariatric seminars, hosted by each of our local hospitals, in October and November. I saw the lapband surgeon in November, and the sleeve/bypass surgeon in December. I have eliminated the band from consideration, and am now focusing my research on the sleeve. I joined this forum yesterday (bariatricpal) and today, I joined Weight Watchers. I'm going to hit this thing from all angles! Today I am going to call my *** and see if they have a nutritionist, because they won't schedule an appointment for me with the bariatric center nutritionist until February. Apparently, she is very busy! Tonight, we are removing all of the remaining holiday treats from the house, and I am going to stop having deserts. I am focusing on drinking more water. ....... here I go ............ on my Journey to Live Longer!

My brain doesn't work... it lies to me.
ssguthrie replied to kranky813's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I so relate to this. I've felt fat starting as far back as my teen years, but when I look at photos of myself as a teen, mid twenties, even mid-thirties, I don't see a fat person. Why did I think I was fat? Now, I look at myself, and I am definitely fat, my self-image more closely matches reality. Does the mind catch up with the body? Do weight loss patients finally grasp, and embrace, their new selves? -

@@TiffanyLM I'm glad you posted started this thread - you've mentioned some of the things I'm nervous about. and @@kranky813, THANK YOU for sharing your '9 days of hell' because, as a newbie, I really do want to know what might happen and it is encouraging to know that bad times can be temporary. My (current) fears are: 1 - turning into a fussy food person. Right now, I can eat almost anything, and dislike very little. I don't want to become one of those people that are fussy about food and don't "like" anything. 2 - giving up alcohol. I don't drink all the time, but I do like to have cocktails with the girls, happy hour now and then, a bottle of wine with a fancy dinner. I don't want to give that up. I have no idea how WLS affects drinking alcohol. 3 - floppy skin. I'm older (56 this week) and don't think my skin has the same elasticity it used to have. I'm afraid of becoming an old chick with wrinkles and excess loose skin everywhere. 4 - being sick. I have a "rock gut" and almost never get ill. I don't want to sign up for daily vomiting, nausea, or sick tummy because something I ate didn't agree with me. Especially if it is meats or veggies or fruits that make me sick! I have a lot to learn still, but any advice or encouragement - especially if my fears are not valid! - is appreciated. Like @@TiffanyLM, I am a newbie and just getting started on the prep.
