I wonder why the diets vary so much? Some people are on full liquids for a week and other not. I guess it's just the surgeons preference.

Did you have heart issues before surgery?

I had 6 months of medically supervised weight loss and it flew by! I was so bummed and impatient too and I can't believe how fast it went by. It'll be here before you know it!

Hi all, I'm posting this for a friend of mine who had RNY surgery about two weeks ago. I can tell she is getting frustrated because her blood sugars are still high and she is still on medication. She keeps hearing these stories of people who went into instant remission and I think that was what she expected. I've been on this site enough to know that everyone is different and I am sure there are people out there who have had a similar experience so I'm hoping to be able to share some of those stories with her. Did anyone have a similar situation where their diabetes took longer to go into remission? I really appreciate any stories you can share. She is feeling now like the surgery wasn't worth it which is hard for me to hear. I'm still about 3 months away from surgery so it's hard for me to give her any advise without having had the experience myself. Thanks in advance!

@@DangerMouse007, I didn't see the post come through. It is just blank after "cured post op". Can you post again as I am interested in hearing your story. [emoji3]

Any exception to 6 month waiting period?
kelliev2015 replied to kelliev2015's topic in Insurance & Financing
OMG. Now I feel silly. -
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has been able to get an exception to the insurance waiting period? I was planning to self pay but when I found out my insurance might cover it, I decided to look into it. Obviously I want to save myself 20K but really didn't want to wait any longer. I have Premera insurance specifically but would be interested to hear if anyone has had any luck with that, regardless of the insurance plan. I've seen a few things where the waiting period was waived but no one said how. Thanks in advance.

In need of a Surgery buddy.May/June
kelliev2015 replied to TiffanyLM's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I started the process in December too but unfortunately, my insurance requires 6 months of physician supervised diets so I won't be able to have mine until July/August. Keep us updated on your progress! -
That is really sad to hear. I agree that if they require more to approve you, they need to make that a "requirement". Obviously we are all here cause we had/have problems with our weight and eating so they shouldn't be too shocked when someone can't do it completely on their own. If you could, you wouldn't need surgery! It is also unfortunate that your doctor is just telling you this now and didn't mention it to you months ago so you could kick it into high gear. That doesn't make any sense to me. I'm sorry you are going through this and hope that you get approved. You can't worry about it until you know that you have something to worry about so just stay the course for now and try and stay positive! Keep us posted.

Any exception to 6 month waiting period?

@@Kidbxrs, I am in the same boat! My BMI is 36 and I lose my benefit if I fall below 35. My nutritionist told me exactly how many calories I should eat to maintain my current weight. They see this all the time and can help you come up with a diet that will keep you stay where you are minus a few pounds. If you drop below 40 BMI, just wear ankle weights to your last weigh in! Haha. (Kidding) ???? -
Complications with surgery
kelliev2015 replied to bettyboop2088's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You said gastric sleeve but in the text you mentioned gastric bypass. Which one did you actually have? Since they are very different surgeries, it is important to know specifically which one you had the issue with. -
Was anyone my same height/weight before surgery?
kelliev2015 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone, I'm in my 6 month insurance "waiting period" and have been reading a lot of the threads on this site to absorb as much info as possible. I've been seeing a lot of posts about people losing like 40 pounds in the first 5 weeks and things like that and I was wondering if anyone was 5'2, 195 pounds before surgery and what your weight loss was like? I know everyone is different but I am interested to hear the experience of those people who were close to my same weight and height so I can get a baseline of what to expect. Again, I know that everyone is different and people lose differently so I won't let it influence my exceptions. Mostly just curious. I'm not sure if it matters but I'm 34. Thanks for sharing! ???? -

That is so exciting! Unfortunately, I didn't start the process until the end of December so my surgery likely won't be until August. Please keep me updated on your surgery and progress! I'm sure you will do awesome. -
Any exception to 6 month waiting period?
kelliev2015 replied to kelliev2015's topic in Insurance & Financing
Wow. That's great for you. I think my insurance is a lot more strict according to my surgeon's office. Glad it worked out for some of you! I hope you are making good progress! -
Any exception to 6 month waiting period?
kelliev2015 replied to kelliev2015's topic in Insurance & Financing
My surgeon doesn't agree with it. He looks at it the same as if you had cancer and the insurance company made you wait 6 months for treatment. I'm lucky in the sense that my BMI is low enough that I likely won't have any major health problems during that time but that may not be the case for other people. I think it is really stupid that they make you wait 6 months to get healthy. I appreciate all of your responses and am just going through the steps. I am 2 months into the 6 months and am hoping it goes by fast! -
When I looked into financing before I found out insurance would pay for it, they just required that the loan was approved before surgery but you have like 3 years to pay it off with an interest rate as low as 3%. Might be worth looking into.
-
Is it an option to pay out of pocket and have it in the US? I think most places do payment plans. Maybe cheaper than adding the additional insurance?
-
I told my boss and coworkers but that is just cause I'm so excited! I don't care who knows or what they say cause I know I'm doing the right thing for me. That being said, I realize I am probably the minority here so I'd just do what the others suggested and just take a week of vacation. If you don't have vacation, maybe just take sick leave and say it's the flu? Haha. I've been sick for a week before! ????

You have to remember that your body thinks it is in starvation mode right now. It has been getting lots of food for a really long time and now it's not so its going to hang onto any fat until it realizes it isn't starving. Once that happens, the weight will start coming off. I've done many, many diets and have had so many stalls and I know it is frustrating but the surgery is done. The "hard part" is over. Now you just have to trust the process and your body. You are not going to fail at this. I know that because if you were going to fail, you wouldn't be so worried about it. Keep us updated!

Replying to a "Wow, How are you Losing so much Weight?"
kelliev2015 replied to BobbyD's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@kristenvsg2014: that's a great response. ???? I'd love to see the look on someone's face. I think people ask "how" cause they want to do it too. Anytime I ask someone how is cause they look amazing and clearly, nothing I do is working. I'm hoping they'll say they discovered a miracle weight loss drug or something. Haha. I think people say "oh" or walk away to the response of surgery cause people get super uncomfortable with that conversation for some reason. I have a good friend who every time I bring it up, she nods her head or quickly acknowledges it and then changes the subject. She doesn't make me feel bad or unsupported, it just makes her uncomfortable for whatever reason. Talking about someone's weight can be a very personal thing. Also, people have a hard time discussing things they don't understand. I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I think the way people are responding is wrong but really, who cares? ???? -
Hi, I am in the 6 month waiting period for insurance and was wondering if anyone did anything in advance of their surgery that helped avoid having loose skin? I am not that worried about it since I would much rather be healthy and have loose skin but just thought I would take advantage of the waiting period and do everything I could to prepare. I've read that castor oil is really good but just wondering if anyone else had any luck with anything else? My BMI is only 36 and if I lose more than 8 pounds during the waiting period, I will be below 35 and lose my benefit so unfortunately, hard core dieting isn't an option for me. ???? Appreciate any tips or suggestions for things to do during the never ending waiting period.

Thanks. I just turned 34 a week ago so I'm not that young! Not that old either. ????
