Where are all the 50 something bypass patients?
marys1521 replied to choosehope's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I originally tried to qualify for Bariatric surgery twenty some years ago. At that time, the guidelines were much more stringent. In one way I am glad that I did not have it then because I think the technique has improved over time. Now it’s endoscopic, etc. and many more doctors are very experienced with it. On the other hand my biggest regret it that I didn’t have it at least ten years ago. This is not from an age point of view but from a how much more I enjoy life and being able to do stuff point of view. I had it at 57 and I did not have any complications or problems with it. Without a doubt, it’s the best thing I have ever had done! -

I was 58 when I had my bypass last year. I basically have been problem free. I love my weight loss! My biggest regret is not having the surgery ten years ago. My husband and I are going on a trip out West next week and it is a trip that I would not have considered doing a year ago. My body and mind are sooo happy! Although a little gross, if you feel like food is getting stuck or just hasn't agreed with you for some reason, go on and let yourself vomit. I had to do this occasionally especially for the first few months after surgery. Now I can eat almost anything that I CHOOSE to eat. Many things I would not even consider eating! My # 1 concern at this point is regain. Best of luck to all! -

I'm so glad that you are healing so well... In one peculiar way, I think it might be a little easier for those of us who are older because many of us have had experiences with pain before! Did the lap band not work for you or had it deteriorated? ...or neither one? -

You will do great. I'm 58 and had mine in May. The nurses told me that I was the oldest patient that day and was the only one to go home the next day! I have been a slow loser yet I must say that it slowly adds up. I have lost almost 100 pounds and feel so much younger! I can't believe it when I read that people lose 75 pounds in five months, etc. I think they are very young and must exercise hours and hours a day! ( Yes, I am a little envious!) I just think of the turtle and the hare! Don't forget to take your phone and phone charger! I won't say that this is a walk in the park. The first few weeks after surgery were difficult. Eventually it will all become a blur and you'll be finished with protein shakes and puréed food! Welcome to your new life! -

I'm here! I am 58 and had surgery in May 2015. I am in the slow loser group compared to most of the people on Facebook!
