  1. Following a gastric sleeve on December 28 I have had five or six episodes of neuropathy of the tongue and lip. Each one lasts approximately five or six hours, and subsides. At first I thought I had bitten my tongue while sleeping but repeated episodes told me maybe it is something different. I have seen a neurologist who tells me that he has very many bariatric patients that have neuropathy. Naturally bariatric patients that have no neurological symptoms do not visit him so his experience is only with those that do. My surgeon told me that there was no problem and he had not had other patients with this problem. On line I find something different, some are related to Vitamin B 12 deficiency, also Calcium deficiency. What is your experience? Have other people had the same problem? Neuropathy/ Paresthesia following WLS

I'll get with our company clinic and see if it was tested for; there were almost two pages of tests requested and done for the neurological work up . If not then I'll request it. Nice thing about the clinic is that all blood tests are free of charge. Will also look for Vitamins with higher Thiamine Thanks again. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Neuropathy/ Paresthesia following WLS

Just what I get from the Multivitamin 25% of daily requirement. Will check labs; neurologist didn't mention any deficiency tho I have eliminated most grains from my diet so could be. Thanks Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  4. I was in a similar situation as yours, my insurance only would pay $4000 toward bariatric surgery. After attending three or four seminars from various providers in the local area and researching on-line I visited a doctor based out of Dallas Texas that offers a hiatal hernia special- If you have a hiatal hernia he will fix it (and bill that to your insurance) and do the sleeve at the same time for about $3000 out of pocket Dr. Clayton Frenzel was an excellent choice in my opinion. But the bottom line what made me decide on him was the bottom line. I could not afford a $20,000 sleeve and did not want to go out of the country. Naturally I did a thorough investigation on line of Dr. Frenzel and found almost universally favorable reviews. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Keeping surgery a secret?

I am sure every case is different and every person is different. I chose to be very open about my surgery and have not had rude or bad comments from anybody. Everybody I know has been very supportive family, friends, coworkers. Many have been curious and asked questions about the surgery. Others have even asked for the name of the doctor as they are considering the same thing. If you don't want to tell family members them just don't tell them. Neuropathy/ Paresthesia following WLS

My B-12 was about 250 (normal is 200-1100 I believe) so I have been talking monthly injections to boost it up- along with weekly sublingual B-12 supplements. Since starting the injections three months ago it has gone up to 350 and I have not had any more episodes so maybe that is helping. Or maybe tomorrow I will have another episode and I have to rethink it. The thing is that when I have these episodes the tongue or lips also swell. I can actually feel them coming on, almost like a tiny mosquito bite. The numbness crescendos over an hour or two and then diminishes over the next five or six hours Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Airport security issues ?

I have flown several times since my sleeve and have had no problem going through security x-ray machines.- Except for my umbilical hernia which must look like a bomb because every time I get patted down on my bellybutton Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Ouch, doesn't that hurt? No it doesn't hurt but it is the next thing to get fixed. Just waiting to drop another 50 pounds. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  9. Have you ever seriously tracked your food consumption for a few weeks to see exactly how many calories, carbs, fat and Protein you are consuming? You may not think you are overeating but if you consume a large amount of calories from carbs and fat every day then the result will be excess weight Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Myfitnesspal is good for tracking this

    Leftovers?

We used to keep all all of our leftover food, I would take it to work the next day for lunch and we would have a leftover night once per week. Now that I can't consume most of the leftovers as my lunch they just pile up in the fridge raider. So now we are at the new junction of all leftovers go over the dog or the trash. Is it ok to feel this good!

Your story parallels mine; a bit of gas the night after surgery; released next day. Good enough to go shopping for broth and Vitamins the next day; drove 6 hours home the next day and back to work on the next day Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Soft food to 'real food' ideas

Ditto the fish comment; I could eat grilled tuna, salmon, halibut or swordfish 7 days a week. There's a Japanese restaurant in town that has a seared tuna tataki appetizer which is just the perfect size for my stomach. Soft foods... Guacamole, chill, homemade Soups (I could eat Soup the other seven days a week), French toast, crab cakes... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. Ditto the Iron sleeve; beef does not make me as happy as pre-sleeve days but is okay; used to love pickles but now rarely eat them as they also seem to feel like rocks in my belly. It also may be not chewing enough...I don't chew to an applesauce consistency. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Reintroducing foods

At about six months I still have trouble with beef. Not that I can't eat it but it just sits in my stomach like a pile of rocks. Much prefer fish or chicken. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Umbilical Hernia ?

I also have an umbilical hernia which my surgeon did not want to fix during my Dec '15 VSG- instead he wants to wait till I have dropped most of my excess weight. He also said that it would be much more difficult than the sleeve; including a six week recovery period off work. 50 more lbs to go and I'll be there. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Eating after sleeve

Learn to make bone broth; buy some good beef marrow bones and roast them with your choice of root veggies- carrots, onions, celery, garlic, parsnips, leeks etc. After roasting add Water to a stock pot or crock pot and simmer several hours with a few bay leaves and a tsp of cider vinegar and salt to taste. I I find good broth is a great friend and it also helps you heal. Store bought usually sucks and is pure chemistry- not nourishment. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
