  1. Has anyone tried this brand (Purity Fruit Bars)? The nurse gave me one and said it's part of the Bari 1 Diet. I told her that I thought RYN patients were to ONLY eat "sugar free" and to stay way from foods with labels that include "no sugar added", at least that was the topic of discussion during the pre-op class. I called my sister, who's an RN and who had RNY 10 years ago, and shared the nutrition facts and she said I wouldn't dump because it only has 1g of natural sugar. This one is a banana flavored fruit pop and its really awesome. What are your thoughts post-RNYer's? Update: Okay, I had very loose stools before leaving the hospital and wondered if it had anything to do with the Popsicle. My Doc mentioned that it was common while things continue to wakeup on the inside, but to call him if I went more than 8 times today and it as loose. I would still like to know the thoughts of others out there.
  2. GM Feb Surgery Crew-- I found chamomile tea to be a calming agent for the gas. I'm more of a coffee drinker, but my wife made me a cup of tea with a Splenda when I started experiencing gas pains in my left shoulder (first time since surgery)...surprisingly I was relieved within 5 minutes or so. I'm not sure if it made a huge difference, but our brand of choice was Mighty Leaf Chamomile Citrus Herbal Tea. I thought it was worth sharing. We will try peppermint tea at some point today.
  3. @ "James Marusek" -- Yes sir, we figured as much, but I wanted to put it out there for you folks. James, thx for taking the time to read the info and respond...you are an awesome mentor to so many of us. I went between my Surgeon's WLS Guide and your downloadable journal while recovering In the hospital and found both thoroughly preparing me for the weeks to come. I can't wait to transition to the stage where the wifey and I can prepare your chili recipe. ☺️
  4. Wow...he looks great. I'm a forward-planner as well and looking for ways to divide my fluids through-out the 24-hour period. My Doc has started me out on a daily requirement of 50 oz of liquids and 50 g of protein. I'm an early riser and always have been, so I'm learning to start sipping early. ???? Again, your husband looks great and congratulations to you both.
  5. Thx @ Karen Gretsinger! I don't wanna ever experience dumping. I'm learning how to sip, truly sip. My wife made me a Protein shake and it was so good at first sip that I began to drink and she had to remind me to sip sip sip. It's hard to imagine someone dumping after eating a little cutie tangerine. But then again, the sugar from the fruit in its natural state was probably way too much. Thx for the response...it's a season of trial and error, even when you think certain things are okay to add back into the diet.
  6. @"Djmohr"..."No more diabetes, Gerd, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, stage 3 kidney disease and anemia. All in remission!" WOW! What a statement. That's awesome. I look forward to having the same testimony soon. I have battled with GERD, HBP, Sleep Ap, arthritis and was border line diabetic, all while attempting to live a normal life and be around for my wife and our 3-year old son. My wife and I cried as the RN and Anesthesiologist rolled me back for surgery and it was because we both were so grateful for a better quality of life that would come after the WLS and the WL. I rejoice with you and pray to be able to same the same once I reach my goal weight.
  7. Of course, your WLS Guide Handbook, if you received one from your surgeons office during your pre-op visits--recovery is a great time to revisits the various stages after surgery and prepare a list of add'l things you may need after surgery. While I enjoyed the Nectar Starwberry-Kiwi and Fuzzy Peach Naval protein powder before surgery, I have NOT enjoyed them during the hospital stay. Also, I enjoy Mio and Sugar Free Kool-Aid over Crystal light and I'm glad I packed them along with a few bottles of smart water because the hospital on gives crystal light and water. Note that most hospitals make their broths from powdered form--I didn't enjoy at all. However, my surgeon asked me to focus on the water and popsicles first few days and to try other forms of clear liquids until my first post-op appt with him in 10 days. Good luck.
  8. @ "Nurse_Lenora" Congrats. It sounds like you're doing all of the right things. ???? I joined the folks on the losers bench this past Monday. Like you, the experience has been just fine. I've asked for very little pain meds, walked the halls in the early mornings and late afternoons, and I've been able to sleep on either side without any problems. However, I did question whether or not I made the right decision on the day after when I took-in 8 oz of broth and 8 oz of crystal light within an hour. Way way way too much for the little pouch. I had to sleep it off and start the sipping process all over the next morning. I've been good since that time and now I'm waiting on my wife to pick me up from the hospital...I'm fully discharged and ready to be home with my family. Again, congrats and I wish you the very best.
  9. I would highly suggest that you follow your Doc's recommendation. I am being discharged from hospital today after undergoing Gastric Bypass Roux-en-Y Surgery. It will cure the GERD, help me to lose the extra 80 pounds gained over the last 10 years, and help me to rid a few other co-morbidities. However, plz be mindful that the sleeve won't do it for you, it will need to be the Roux-en-Y to totally get rid of the miserable GERD (per initial consult with my surgeon).
  10. I totally understand your concerns about trying new things and your desires to add new things to the bland diet. Congrats on your success thus far and I certainly hope you're able to conquer the leg cramps--they're no fun.

    <sigh> I gave in....

Amen @lifeofblair...I feel the same will be for me, if I go back to eating sweets. My wife asked if I would allow my favorite baker (friend of the family) to make my favorite pound cake using Splenda...the young lady was sleeved and makes a cake every week...I don't know how she does it--she says it's therapeutic. She even makes cakes for a friend, but they are diabetic-friendly. I'm too afraid to open myself up to anything sweet when it's been a lifelong struggle.
  13. @@bugsy72 Wow...you're able to eat bananas a month out from your surgery and its dietician approved? Enjoy! My Doc and Dietician only gives the green light on berries from the fruit category and only after their patients have lost 75% of their weight...they really prefer for us to be in the maintenance phase before adding fruits and a few other items.

    RnY surgery

I feel ya and you speak truth...glad I made the decision to have GPS...I'm so looking forward to a better quality of life. I'm up @ 4am working on my last 12 Fluid ounces to meet the quota for discharge. Everyone at Centennial Hospital has been 5* and they have treated me like their own family members and made me feel right at home, but I'm ready to go home and see my family. This is day 4 for me and I'm noticing that as the swelling continues to go down I am able to tolerate more liquids. I'm excited about that...I really thought that the initial feeling of being very very very full would be there forever and I didn't know how I would keep pressing past that feeling and take in the required amount of daily fluids. It's just like everyone has said, things get better everyday.
  15. I am so sorry to hear that. It's certainly true that everyone is different and recovers differently. I hope you get some relief soon. Are you able to walk the halls? I'm sore, but it's tolerable.
  16. Did you have your surgery already or did you mean to post Feb 18th?Had it this Monday Feb 8 Congrats. How do u feel?
  17. Understood. I had crystal light to my water, eating some gelatin, and chicken or beef broth. I can tolerate all of it, it's just that I'm looking for a plan to follow that will allow me to get it in and not become dehydrated. The dietician just left my room and she says to sip sip sip every 5 minutes. I just think it's easier in those who have had the sleeve as the capacity is greater.

    Today is the day!

You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. Sending up prayers for you today. I made it over to the loser's bench this past Monday. I was nervous until Doc walked in and helped me to realize why I was having the surgery. My wife and I looked at one another, shook our heads in agreement, she gave me a big hug and kiss and I'm 2-days post op...no complications...gas is passing through both ends...working on getting fluids in before being discharged.
  20. Hi there. I also had RYN-GPS a few days ago (Feb. 8th). How was your husband able to manage Fluid intake before being discharged? The nurses are encouraging me to take in 64 ounces, within a 24-hour time period, before I can be discharged. It's extremely hard...just within an hour and forty-five minutes, I've only had 1 1/2 fluid ounces. Yikes...I'm worried because I feel so full. However, I'm just starting to pass gas and I'm hoping that by releasing the gas from both ends that it may help to relieve some pressure from my new pouch and allow room for more liquids. Does your husband have any tips? I know it's sip sip sip, but did he just sit and sip allllllllll day?
  21. Did you have your surgery already or did you mean to post Feb 18th?
  22. You're absolutely right...I didn't think about the folks who fly to and from Mexico for their surgical procedures.
