Tired of Unhappy Stomach
jj7481 replied to bugsy72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgical center provides a stage-by-stage diet plan including portion sizes. My stage 2 was no more than 2oz of yogurt/mashed potatoes/cottage cheese at a time, 4x daily. Post bypass is an experiment that each person needs to take part in. What food agrees with me may not agree with you. Stick to your measured portions 3-4x daily and make sure you are getting in all your Protein as well as Water. That way you'll KNOW you're eating the right amount and not too much. If you need to break the meals down into smaller portions....so be it. -
@@Djmohr, sadly there isn't any deterrent to their behavior. The dichotomy of this is many people who have Medicaid or disability are also impoverished. Monetarily penalizing them would only worsen their situation. Taking away their benefits would just create more uninsured and more bill offs because, like said before, they don't have the money so it just costs more to sue them. Punishing them legally would just worsen an already overpopulated prison system. No easy answer but I agree...there has to be reform. This is why I'm a big advocate for community paramedic/PA/NP programs which take healthcare to those who have limited means or mobility to get to a doctors office.

That is exactly my thoughts about not telling people outright. WLS is still viewed, by many, as "an easy out." My general response to them (excuse my language): "piss off."

Sadly, this is the attitude of several Medicaid patient's I've cared for over the years. Whether it be from using an ambulance as a taxi (literally had one tell me it didn't cost them money, but a cab did), to those who don't care how often they are abusing an ER. VERY frustrating as their is not penalty for them.

I hate vacation simply because it costs me money to travel, but I miss out on hundreds of dollars in OT opportunities.

Completely normal. Go back to basics. Make sure you're intaking all your Protein and Water. If you need to space out the fluids so you're always sipping on something.

Surgery Scheduled for March - no Pre-op Diet?
jj7481 replied to twinkats's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pre-op diets primarily target shrinking the liver to make it easier for the surgeon to move out of the way, and give them more room to work with. Like said above....it usually depends on your BMI. -
What made you choose this surgery vs others?

Do you have any family members who have had sleeve? I guess I'm trying to clarify who your comparing your family members to when saying they eat more than sleeved patients? Dumping is a possibility, but mostly avoidable as long as you stick to your diet and plan. Both pouches and sleeves will stretch after time due to a term call "compliance." Neither RNY nor sleeves will stretch to the original size of the stomach, but they will be able to fit more food after about the first year. Don't take this the wrong way, but are you your family? Do YOU want this to succeed? Success isn't dependent on anything or anyone else but yourself. If you follow the diet set forth by your bariatric team and keep an open line of communication with them...you'll do well. -
How long until you can go back to sedentary office job after RNY GBP?
jj7481 replied to swizzle's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Correct. The not drinking before or after meals is once you start on Stage 2 or 3. I was off two weeks mainly due to lifting restrction. I went back to work at 2.5 wks and lift patient's on a daily basis; no issues. -
What made you choose this surgery vs others?
jj7481 replied to bigjim1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you have reflux at all....get bypass. I was almost 400 lbs when I started and my decision was down to sleeve or bypass. My apprehension about bypass were the horror stories from the late 90's and early 21'st Century. However, in reading recent studies and researching current data I was ok with the surgeons recommendation of bypass. My thoughts are this: 1.) Bypass leaves the anatomy God gave you still in your body; nothing removed. Yes, it's reshaped but the stomach stays in the body. Sleeve leaves you with whats removed. 2.) Bypass is reversible if ever needed. Sleeve is not as that part of your stomach is gone. When you talk about recovery time you're looking at similar recovery time for RNY or sleeve. I was only on a lifting restriction for 2 weeks and back to work at 2.5 wks. Granted, I'm also in my mid-30s and age plays a large factor in recovery time. -
That was exactly my though "Oh thank God! Something resembling solid food!!!"

Interesting. Certainly follow up here and let us know what they diagnose as. I'd be interested to hear.

Does your insurance require a recommendation from your PCP? Mine didn't. In fact, when I told my PCP I was going to have surgery she gave me a recommendation as to whom she had interaction with, but no letter was needed. The problem I ran into is her preferred hospital wasn't my insurance preferred surgical center.

You can as long as they aren't the ER/XR version.

Numbers look great. Keep up the strong work!

Stick with it and stick to the plan. You'' get better and be on your way before you know it.

Definitely talk with your nutritionist in regards to your intake. Your body has no energy due to limited calories and Protein. Intaking that few of calories will send the body into starvation mode and make it want to store any and all fat it can. Post op your concern should be protein and Water. If you have to takes sips every few minutes just to get 2-3 shakes in....the that's what you have to do. Your nutritionist will help provide ideas for different way to intake protein despite your nausea.

For the first week I was still on liquds only. However, once starting stage II I was able to encorporate eggs and enjoyed them on many mornings. No dumping but I did have to make sure and chew them THOROUGHLY. To me, the eggs helped start the cycle of reminding myself to chew 30-40x per bite and slow down.

Medicare coverage question
jj7481 replied to glitter eyes's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Does your mom's primary not cover it because it's not apart of her coverage, or because she doesn't meet their criteria? -
Liquid hydrocodone will likely be your best bet. I'm guessing your Fentanyl is in the form of a patch or "sucker?"
-
This is why continued exercise should include strength training.
