    My journey

Not uncommon. Keep an open line of communication with your surgery center. If you can't get answers that way then call your insurance company direct and see if there is a delay.
  2. Hello from a northlander! I've been wondering what other people from the KC area are on here. I never joined a support ground through my surgical center, but I'm not opposed to the idea.

Firefighters (or any public safety) thread

That's what I did for the first 6 wks back. Portioned out my meals the night before, or morning of. I don't always get in on shack, but when I do I just make requests (or don't eat the carbs). You can still measure out what you're eating at the station to stick with your diet.
  4. My workouts are usually between 11pm and 1am. If I eat before it's usually around 9pm at the latest but never any later than that as eating before a workout bogs me down. But, on my strength training days I eat a Protein bar or shake after my workouts.
  5. Loose skin is always a possibility with any WLS. Loosing to much weight isn't a typical issue with WLS as the majority of people usually settle in at their goal weight. Try not to fixate on these concerns and concentrate on how much better you'll feel without the excess weight on your body.

Firefighters (or any public safety) thread

8 weeks would have made me go insane. I enjoy going to work and 2 wks was even a stretch for me. Eating at the station is all about communication. You don't have to tell them what surgery you had done, but make sure they know what requests you have. Most stations will accommodate in getting either alternatives, or something just for you. There are a lot of guys who have diet restrictions where I work (either due to body building competitions, gluten free, etc) and the crews are good and sticking to their requests.
  7. That's a lot for any two people to handle. Best of luck with the continued recovery and success!

Firefighters (or any public safety) thread

Paramedic for 12.5 yrs on a busy urban fire department. I was back to work after bypass in 2 1/2 wks without restriction. Lifting was my big concern but my doc only had a two wk, 10 lb restriction. Been back a month and a half with no issues. Biggest problem is keeping on diet with all the station food.
  9. I stalled a little afte week 3. Gained some weight back but eventually back track after about 2 wks.
  10. I was cleared after two weeks to resume workouts. I do three strength sessions per week and at least two cardio (treadmill, elliptical, etc). I've also started incorporating kettle bells once a week.

    Upper GI Results - Oy!

RNY will help with the GERD. Did you test + for H. Pylori? That was my issue and had to complete a two week course of antibiotics and PPI's. The hiatal hernia will likely get fixed during your surgery. Family is....family. You just need to remind them when they are overstepping their bounds.

    Chicken

First, make sure you are chewing the tougher thoroughly (at least 40x per bite). Second, take smaller bites. It's annoying because it takes longer, but it can keep you from stomach pains and/or vomiting.

Do I Get Voted Off the Forums if.....

I don't think you'll find many on here upset at you for taking your path to weight loss. Best of luck to you and to the treatment of your wife's condition.

    Gained 10lbs post op

When you say you're struggling I'd ask what changes you've made so far. Have you started an exercise routine? Have you started to cut back on portions? Like posted above you need to find the "why." The liquid diet will be a struggle if you can't figure out where the deficiency/problem is. Lock it down, stick with it, and move towards a healthier life.
  16. I look at it this way: I didn't decide on bariatric surgery to stay the same person. The same person was the one who lost and regained several hundred pounds. The same person was the one who had problems with portions. The same person was the one who kept saying he should do something to lose weight but never took action. The person I am now....he took action to improve his life for him and his family.
  17. Indeed. Sometimes they need to remember that they only have one of you. You can't be the only one trying in the relationship.
  18. See, no biggy. I do agree with your frustration. If that's all he was waiting for why not communicate it?
  19. STAY.....OFF.....THE.....SCALE! I thought I could weigh daily and I couldn't handle it. I weigh weekly and life is moving along MUCH better.
  20. Everyone has different experience with surgery, and not all surgeries go well. This doesn't mean your surgeon is bad or this will happen to you. If you have concerns about her you can do some basic research here : http://www.healthgrades.com/physician/dr-christina-li-ygg5s/background-check One bad experience doesn't mean your surgeon is bad nor does it mean it will happen to you.
  21. Get some Gas-X. Gas-x worked wonders for me. I had gas build up and bloating a few days after being released. Symptoms subsided within 8 hours.

    Feeling very blah...

Definity try Gas-x or Beano. I had bloating an pains similar to what you're describing and Gas-x calmed symptoms down by that evening.
  23. Stories like these are always hard to read. Growing up my mother didn't want me to be overweight, but she never shamed me or called me names. For that....I thank her. However, one mantra I have lived by and will always live by is this: Blood may make you family but it doesn't afford you unlimited currency to treat me as you please.
  24. Reading this is disheartening and I'm sorry you're going through this. However, this post raises more questions than it answers. From what you posted I definitely agree you should seek counseling of some sort. Otherwise, you'll maintain this anger and that's never healthy. Find someone to talk this through and get through it together. Outside of that....follow up with your surgeons office. They are typically a great support system or can put you in contact with supports groups, therapists, or psychologists.

What can I do with...string cheese?

I love cheese as-is. Sharp cheddars and Vermont White Cheddar are my favorites.
